CE1603 Benign? Not So Fast - Challenging Oral Diseases and the Tools to Decipher Them DOLPHINE ODA, BDS, MS

Friday, September 23, 2016

UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON – KANE HALL

This course is designed for specialists, dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants.

This all-day course will cover lesions in nine categories that have benign-looking clinical pre-sentations when, in actuality, most carry a serious or frank malignant diagnosis. The course will cover: soft tissue and bone lesions including diseases of the surface epithelium, focus-ing on early detection of cancer; gingival swellings in adults and children; palatal swellings, focusing on salivary gland pathology; oral ulcers, focusing on immune mediated diseases but also covering the oral manifestation of gastrointestinal diseases; brown spot(s), focusing on drug-induced and oral malignant melanoma; multiple papillary lesions, focusing on oral HPV-associated diseases, including oral cancer; unilocular radiolucencies, focusing on aggressive oral cysts and cancer metastasis; multilocular radiolucencies, focusing on aggressive odon-togenic neoplasms, completely radiopaque lesions (single and multiple), and the latter’s as-sociation with Gardner’s syndrome. Every category will start with a clinical case which will be discussed interactively, seeking a differential diagnosis from the audience. The case will serve as the basis for an in-depth discussion of the differential diagnosis, clinical presentation, and final diagnosis based on the histology. Treatment at every level, recurrence rate, and overall prognosis will also be discussed. Clinicians will leave this program with ample knowledge to use when deciding whether or not a certain presentation is truly benign. They will be provided with tools to base their judgment on facts, not uncertain conjecture. This is an enthusiastic, energetic course. It will provide necessary information directly applicable to improving the everyday practice of diagnosing oral diseases.

Course Objectives - As a result of attending this course, you will be able to:

n Be proficient in the diseases of HPV and oral cancer.n Recognize the effects of e-cigarettes and hookah on oral health.n Implement radiolucent and radiopaque lesions of the jaw.

The University of Washington gratefully acknowledges Henry Schein for its gener-ous educational grant in support of this program.

This course is designed for everyone who works in a dental office – bring the whole team! It provides the information necessary to complete the annual training re-quirement for your entire dental team.

WISHA-OSHA requires employers to provide annual training for all of their employees. Com-pliance with WISHA-OSHA regulations and CDC Infection Control Guidelines is also an inte-gral part of a dental practice’s overall risk management program. OSHA inspections do occur and many state dental boards are enforcing CDC Guidelines as the benchmark for infection control standard of care.

This comprehensive class will update your office on the current requirements that apply to a dental practice and provide you with the knowledge to establish a properly customized OSHA safety compliance program and infection control policies and practices for your office.

Dr. Barry offers an informative class that is both interesting and engaging with examples of actual safety related events. Materials, devices, monitoring, and documents necessary for compliance will be identified throughout the class. Training will primarily focus on the OSHA regulations with an in-depth review of the CDC Guidelines for Infection Control in the Dental Healthcare Setting. Several other important regulatory rules and guidelines will also be dis-cussed.

Course Objectives - As a result of attending this course, you will understand:

n All the WISHA/OSHA standards that apply to dentistry and how to implement them.n The Blood borne Pathogen Standard requirements including, transmission of disease,

exposure control methods, hepatitis 8 vaccine, post exposure protocols, and record keeping.

n The CDC Guidelines for Infection Control in the Dental Healthcare Setting and the essentials of the CDC standard precautions

UW CONTINUING DENTAL EDUCATION 3

This course is designed for specialists, dentists, dental hygienists and dental as-sistants.

Have you ever had to face the prospect of treating a medically-complex patient? Have you ever had a patient needing treatment for a dental emergency that has more than one under-lying chronic disease or is on more than five medications? Now what if these same patients are also experimenting with illicit drugs? How does the use of marijuana, cocaine, metham-phetamine, crack, Salvia divinorum, khat bush, or designer drugs such as MDPV change your treatment plan?

Drug abuse remains a major problem in our society. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health conducted by SAMSHA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration), between 2012 and 2014 an estimated 4.3 million (4.7%) adults aged 50 or older had used an illicit drug in the previous year. Moreover, the organization’s combined data from 2005 to 2014 showed that over 8.3 million children (11.9%) lived with at least one parent who was dependent on or abused alcohol or an illicit drug during the past year. Among that population almost 2.1 million (3.0%) lived with a parent who was dependent on or abused illicit drugs.

If substance abuse and dependence affects one in ten North Americans, this means one in ten of your patients. With the approval of both medical and recreational marijuana in the Ev-ergreen state, the number of users who now present to the dental office is rapidly escalating.

This program looks at some of these most challenging patients, their most common nega-tive oral health sequelae due to marijuana use and the management of these patients with a particular focus on the dental realm. Case studies will augment the delivery of key points and a problem-based learning approach is encouraged so that each participant’s questions are addressed. Most importantly, you will learn applicable strategies to successfully treat these complex patients on Monday morning.

Course Objectives - As a result of attending this course, you will be able to:

n Describe the risk factors to consider when treating patients who use marijuana.n Understand the medical evidence behind the safety and efficacy of cannabis.n Recognize some of the oral signs of marijuana use and how to better manage these

patients.

This course is offered in partnership with the Seattle King and Pierce County Dental Societies.

The development of new materials has proceeded so rapidly that many clinicians are left con-fused by the wealth of new products that are available in many areas. This course will present the latest information available on current dentin/enamel adhesives, composite resins, and light-curing technology. It also will cover contemporary cements, a confusing area that is important to the success of our routine indirect restorations and esthetic cases. Information provided will be based on scientific evidence, but the clinical use of all materials will be em-phasized.

Course Objectives - As a result of attending this course, you will be able to:n Know the four current strategies for bonding to tooth structure, including the self-etch

and universal systems.n Explain the benefits of contemporary nanofill and bulk-fill composite materials.n Know the various types of cements for indirect restorations, and when they should be

used.

This course is designed for dentists, hygienists and dental assistants.

Did you know that more than 20% of hospital admissions are due to adverse drug reactions? Although dentists prescribe less than 10% of all available drugs, your patients may be taking many others from the 90% with which you may not be familiar. Since polypharmacy is the norm, especially in the over 65-year old population, this course is essential to every practice setting today.

Do you have patients who are already on one prescription medication before they come to your office? How about four prescription medications? Did you know that the likelihood of a drug interaction in a patient on five medications is greater than 50%? What if you are the prescriber who writes the fifth prescription? With so many new medications, herbal products, over-the-counter drugs, and supplements available on the market, how can you be confident that the prescription you write is compatible with what your patient is currently taking?

This interactive program looks at some of the more common drugs and drug interactions and their management with a particular focus on the dental realm. Case studies will augment the delivery of key points and a problem-based learning approach is encouraged so that each participant’s questions are addressed. After all, when an adverse drug reaction occurs due to a drug interaction, who is more at risk – you or your patient?

This course will also provide updates on antibiotic selection and therapy, pain and anxiety control, the State Prescription Drug Database, Osteonecrosis of the Jaw with bisphospho-nates and much more!

Course Objectives - As a result of attending this course you will be able to:n Describe the most effective “recipe” for post-operative pain control.n Understand appropriate antibiotic prescribing and current guidelines for prophylaxis

(especially for cardiac and orthopedic patients).n Keep your patients safe with improved prescribing practices.

INSTRUCTORMARK DONALDSON received his baccalaureate degree from the University of British Columbia, and his Doctorate in Clinical Pharmacy from the University of Washington. He has further completed a residency at Canada’s largest tertiary care facility, Vancouver General Hospital, and is the current Director of Clinical Pharmacy Performance Services for VHA, living in Whitefish, Montana.

The University of Washington gratefully acknowledges the Washington Dental Service Foundation for its generous educational grant in support of this program.

This course is designed for dentists.

With the baby boom generation reaching 65 years and beyond, this is the first generation of Americans to reach older adulthood with an almost intact natural dentition. While keeping our teeth as we age is a positive trend, increasing lifespans can also result in the onset of chronic conditions, long-term medication usage, and oral diseases that can create complex dental treatment needs and questions on the part of dental professionals on how to care for this population.

Most dentists today received very little formal training in caring for the unique needs of older patients. WDS Foundation engaged a team of national experts in serving older adults, led by Dr. Linda Niessen, DMD, MPH, to develop a course that discusses the importance of treating the oral health needs of independently-living older adults in your office. This course is targeted to general dentists to expand their expertise in delivering optimal dental care to this diverse, and growing, senior population who needs care. The course will include patient cases and discussion to assess treatment options based on the patient’s goals, ability to pay, health status, etc. The course is designed to build confidence in treating older patients, un-derstand patient care options, and increase access to dental care for older adults.

Course Objectives - As a result of completing this course you will be able to:n Enhance understanding in managing the interactions between oral conditions and overall

health and the importance of prevention at every age and stage of health.n Provide clinical tips associated with senior’s common clinical needs, such as root caries,

endodontics, oral surgery, and implants.n Gain practical insights on serving more seniors in your office–practice management,

scheduling, billing, and other topics.

This course is designed for specialists, dentists, hygienists and dental assistants.

Morning Topic: CBCT for the General Dental ProfessionalCone beam CT (CBCT) has gained more and more field in the last decade, while most of us have never been trained to use the technology or interpret the images acquired from it. This course will first explain what the differences are between CBCT and the more common two dimensional imaging techniques (intraoral and extraoral radiography) in dentistry. Secondly the radiation doses associated with CBCT will be discussed as well as how to influence the dose (kV, mA, exposure time, field of view) and the image quality (high versus low resolu-tion). Last but not least, the indications, contra-indications, advantages and disadvantages of CBCT will be highlighted and illustrated with examples from the clinic. Examples will be shown using software programs from different manufacturers too.

Afternoon Topic: Restorative UpdateSelected members of the UW Department of Restorative Dentistry will review three highly relevant topics in restorative dentistry. Dr. Ricardo Schwedhelm will examine various compli-cations associated with implant therapy and then outline associated solutions. This will be followed by Dr. Yen Wei Chen’s discussion of digital dentistry with particular emphasis on its relevance in clinical practice. Dr. Jae Kim will finish with a method to simplify treatment plan-ning to produce ultimate esthetic outcomes.

Course Objectives - As a result of attending both topics you will be able to:n Put the radiation doses in dentistry in perspective and use this information when asked

by their patients.n Refer correctly for CBCT.n Diagnose, treat, and ultimately prevent complications related to implant therapy.n Develop confidences in the relevance and usefulness of digital dentistry.n Understand how tooth position, proportion, and progression effect esthetic outcomes.
