    NCUK International Foundation Year in London

    University pathway programmes specifically designed for international students.

    Our curriculum is designed by NCUK – a consortium that is arranged by the universities themselves.

    What is NCUK?The Northern Consortium of UK Universities (NCUK) is a global provider of pathway programmes specifically designed for international students.

    It is uniquely positioned as an organisation because it was founded by 11 leading UK universities. This gives NCUK centres and students unprecedented access and support through the university application process.

    Part of the NCUK guarantee is that students are guaranteed a minimum of 2 conditional offers to the universities and 1 unconditional offer if you pass the course.

    What is the International Foundation Year in Business?The International Foundation Year gives access to Year 1 of a UK degree.

    The programme is taught over one year and is assessed via examinations and coursework. As well as equipping you with the English skills and academic qualifications for studying in the UK, the IFY increases your cultural awareness.

    What options are available after my IFY?There are a range of degree courses you can progress to from the IFY in a wide range of subjects such as:

    Partner Universities &Guaranteed Progression

    Can I choose which university I want to go to?Yes. You can apply to up to five universities. NCUK Universities have their own entry criteria for each course. The better you do, the more choice you will have.

    What about help with English language skills?Our unique English for Academic Purposes language support gives you the reading, writing, listening and speaking skills you will be using in university. Unlike IELTS the EAP uses real materials from university- level situations preparing you to succeed right from the start.

    International Foundation Year at BSC London Hampstead

    An exclusive area of LondonEstablished in 1977, our school is one of London’s premier language schools. Located in one of the city’s most desirable boroughs, the school is a short walk from Hampstead Village and West Hampstead’s cafés, boutiques, bars and restaurants.

    Outdoor patiosThe school has two beautiful outdoor patios for students to enjoy between classes and at lunchtimes. Popular social spaces during the summer, the patios are enclosed and private, and there is plenty of seating for everyone!

    Library and study centreThe library and study centre is a dedicated quiet space complete with comfortable seating and a large range of educational resources. Run by student volunteers, there is also the chance to get involved and practise your English with fellow students.

    AccommodationMany school-managed options available including homestay, studio apartments and local residences. Our families are located in zones 3-4. All hosts are within reasonable and safe walking distance from a train or underground station.

    Students under 18 must choose the homestay option.

    The NCUK IFY in Business is a modular programme that will prepare you for first-year entry to undergraduate degree courses. You will study a combination of modules that fit in with your degree destination.

    CORE MODULES

    ECONOMICSAn introduction to basic economic concepts and principles. Reference is mainly to the UK experience in preparation for studying with British students at university. The first semester will deal with “micro” economic issues and the second semester will deal with “macro” economic issues.

    Aims

    • To develop key knowledge and understanding of economic concepts and principles in a national and global economic environment.

    • To encourage students to analyse, explain and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the market economy and the role of government within it.

    ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES (EAP)The NCUK EAP module provides students with the English language and academic skills required by UK university programmes. EAP is closely integrated with the subject modules to cultivate a commitment to good practice in academic work, work effectively in collaboration with others and develop the confidence and competence of the students as learners. It supports the overall aim of encouraging the students to take responsibility for their own learning and introduces them to the planning and organisation skills necessary to develop as independent, autonomous learners.

    BUSINESS STUDIESStudents will receive a solid grounding in many aspects of business studies and feel confident in commencing the study of business-related courses at undergraduate level.

    Aims

    • To introduce students to the necessary subject knowledge and understanding required for the successful study of Business Studies and related Social Science disciplines at undergraduate level in an NCUK partner university.

    • To develop an understanding of the three key functional areas of business (marketing, accounting & finance, and human resource management) as well as the external environment in which UK businesses operate and the topical issues which affect them.

    ELECTIVE MODULES

    SOCIETY & POLITICSStudents will receive a solid grounding in many aspects of the study of society and politics and feel confident in undertaking undergraduate studies in this field. The module is based mainly on sociology, and more specifically on ‘A’ and ‘AS’ level Sociology.

    Aims

    • To introduce students to the necessary subject knowledge and understanding required for the successful study of Society & Politics and related Social Science disciplines at undergraduate level in an NCUK partner university.

    • To develop skills of application, analysis and evaluation in the context of the study of society and politics.

    • To develop a knowledge and understanding of society and politics both at a global and a British level, and to enable the application of such knowledge and understanding to the students’ home countries.

    MATHS (BUSINESS)The overall aim of this course is to equip students with the mathematical knowledge and skills necessary for entry to the first year of any UK/Western undergraduate degree course.

    Aims

    • To develop abilities to think logically, to recognise incorrect reasoning and to express ideas clearly.

    • To develop an enthusiasm for the subject and the skills required to apply the knowledge to both the further study and application of mathematics.

    • To develop in students an understanding of how theory and application work together and their skills in modelling and the interpretation of results.

    Good to know

    ICTStudents use Microsoft Office software in the analysis of data and preparation and presentation of reports. Wherever possible, coursework should be designed to enable students to demonstrate their generic ICT skills and this ability be assessed.

    AssessmentThe final summative assessment is made up of 30% continuous assessment (coursework) and 70% final examination(s).
