Before You Begin

A copy of OpenSolaris(2009.6) on a disc or as an ISO image

Vmware Workstation 5 or higher

1280MB of ram is strongly suggested, with 1GB being thebare minimal on Windows XP and Linux, and 1.5GB advised for Vista or OpenSolaris hosts

3.6GB of free hard disk space is the bare minimal necessary for this guide

A broadband internet connection is recommended

Preparing Vmware for installing OpenSolaris

Open VMware Workstation and you will be presented by a start page where you would click on the New Virtual Machine icon to start the guest wizard.

Select custom so you can make specific changes to your guest as the wizard progresses.

If you are using VMware Workstation 6.5, you will be asked to select a compatibility mode in case you are sharing your guest with older versions; otherwise you are safe to choose Workstation 6.5.

If you'd like to use an ISO image instead, choose "Installer disc image file (iso)" and browse for the file.

Select Sun Solaris and choose Solaris 10.

Use OpenSolaris as the guest virtual machine name.

Leave the CPU set to 1 unless you explicitly need to allocate a second core or processor to the guest for performance reasons.

Allocate 768MB of memory or more to the guest.

You should be fairly safe keeping the default (NAT) unless you need to use your OpenSolaris guest from an outside network such as a LAN or via the interne.

The default of LSI Logic for use as the SCSI adapter should be a suitable choice and is best left as-is.

It's safe to select either IDE or SCSI, though it is suggested that you go with SCSI.

Leave disk set to "Create a new virtual disk".

Allocate at least 8GB to the guest if you have it available, with 16GB suggested if you intend to use for development purposes or are going to make more than routine use of ZFS features.

A disk name of "OpenSolaris.vmdk" is suitable to use.

Now that you're done configuring all of those settings, your inventory should look similar to ours.

Start the virtual machine and wait for the VMware BIOS splash to disappear.

The GRUB boot loader for the LiveCD will appear. You are safe to choose the first boot option by pressing enter after giving the guest focus.

In most cases you will want to select the default, being US (Type 43) depending on your locale and keyboard type. Proceed to the next step by pressing enter.

Select your preferred language to be used during the installation, or press enter to select the default, which is US English.

At this stage, the OpenSolaris GNOME Desktop will appear. Please wait until all notification applets have appeared before proceeding to the next step.

Now you may start the OpenSolaris installer by double clicking on the Install icon located on your desktop.

The OpenSolaris installer greets you with a tip about old installs and offers the ability to view the release notes. You may now proceed to the next step by clicking the next button.

This step involves partitioning your virtual hard disk, and in most cases the default is suitable for our purposes. Click next to proceed.

Next, set up your time zone by hovering over the 2D globe and selecting a point that closely matches your residence. You may select either 12 or 24 hour clock mode, depending on your preference and region. Click next to proceed.

Select your preferred localization so you can take advantage of multilingual features and native translations on your installed copy of OpenSolaris.

Set up your primary administrative user. This user account will allow you add more users through the Users and Groups GUI under System -> Administration.Your password should be at least 8 characters and can contain most characters, including symbols, within ASCII limitations.

Confirm the accuracy of the installation details and click install to proceed.

The installer is now about ready to start copying files to the guest.

Congratulations! You now have a physical copy that runs under VMware Workstation without the LiveCD. Click on reboot to have the guest boot into the new environment.
