Brimming with charm, you can stretch your legs as you slow down and ponder life, “back in the good ol’ days”. The Upper Lachlan, otherwise known as the Shire of Villages, is home to some of Australia’s loveliest townships. Dating back to the early 1800’s, each and every one of our picturesque villages are worth a visit. Happily, we have three Self-Guided Heritage Walks, for Crookwell, Gunning and Taralga, to help guide you on your way. Crookwell, boasting snow dusted winters with cosy warm fires, autumns ablaze with colour, spring blooms galore and mild sunny summers, is a lovely destination. The earliest map bearing the name “Crookwell” was Surveyor Dixon’s 1828 trace of the Dividing Range. When the town site was surveyed in 1860, Surveyor Armstrong suggested “It would be appropriate to name it Crookwell’. While no definitive evidence on the name has been discovered, Surveyor Dixon’s mother came from Crookhall in County Durham, and this is the best guess for the origin of the name. It’s only a short drive to the welcoming township of Gunning. Gunning’s earliest people were the Pajong People “Fish River Tribe”. It is believed that the name Gunning may be derived from a Ngunnawal word, “Goonong”, meaning “a place of many waterholes”. European settlement began in 1821. It is from near here Hamilton Hume and William Hovell led an exploration party to find new grazing lands and chart river flows to the south. Merino sheep were introduced early on, and Gunning remains a major centre of fine wool production in not only Australia, but worldwide. Also nearby is the charming and picturesque village of Taralga, a settlement originally planned for workers on the Macarthur estate of ‘Richlands’. John Macarthur’s sons received land grants in the district in the early 1820s and convict labour was used to shepherd the sheep and clear the land. With rolling hills and stunning tree corridors, Taralga’s beauty will have you wandering the streets for hours. The Self-Guided Heritage Walks are available at the Crookwell Visitor Information Centre, at various outlets in Gunning and Taralga, or access them online from www.visitupperlachlan.com.au/see-do/explore/walking- trails. Ensure the number of people in a facility does not exceed one person per 4 square metres of space (excluding staff) to a maximum of 500 people. Exclude staff, volunteers, parents/carers and participants who are unwell. Minimise co-mingling of participants from different games and timeslots where possible. Ensure spectators comply with 1.5 metres physical distance where practical, such as through staggered seating. People who live in the same household are not exempted. Have strategies in place to manage gatherings that may occur immediately outside the premises, such as with drop off and pick up zones or staggered start/finish times. Ensure communal facilities such as showers, change rooms and lockers have strategies in place to reduce crowding and promote physical distancing. Where practical, stagger the use of communal facilities. Strongly encourage participants to shower/change at home where possible. Encourage participants to bring their own water bottle, snacks/orange slices and sweat towels. Avoid shared food and drinks. Reduce sharing of equipment where practical and ensure these are cleaned with detergent and disinfectant between use. Ensure processes are in place to launder shared uniform items after use, such as bibs or jerseys. Unlock the secrets of the Upper Lachlan’s pastA lovely way to while away some time when visiting rural

Australian towns and villages is wandering the wide, tree

lined streets, day dreaming about the beautiful old

buildings nestled within.

Brimming with charm, you can stretch your legs as you

slow down and ponder life, “back in the good ol’ days”.

The Upper Lachlan, otherwise known as the Shire of

Villages, is home to some of Australia’s loveliest

townships.

Dating back to the early 1800’s, each and every one of

our picturesque villages are worth a visit. Happily, we

have three Self-Guided Heritage Walks, for Crookwell,

Gunning and Taralga, to help guide you on your way.

Crookwell, boasting snow dusted winters with cosy warm

fires, autumns ablaze with colour, spring blooms galore

and mild sunny summers, is a lovely destination. The
