The Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival inRochester, N.Y., has quickly become one of the nation’s mostpopular and most respected music festivals. Founded in 2002and produced by John Nugent and Marc Iacona, attendanceat the festival has grown each year—from 15,000 the first yearto more than 162,000 in 2010—attracting music lovers fromaround the United States and the world.
There are many unique reasons why the Xerox RochesterInternational Jazz Festival has become so popular, includingbeing able to walk from one venue to another, the diversity ofvenues, and the extensive lineup of international musicians.From legendary performers and familiar favorites to risingstars and new discoveries, this is a festival that navigates allgenres of creative improvised music from all corners of theworld.
This year’s 10th anniversary edition is no exception. It willfeature a diverse and eclectic performance roster of 1,000-plus artists from 15 countries performing in more than 285concerts. There’s something for everyone at XRIJF!

Nine-time Grammy award-winning singer, song-writer and performer Natalie Cole has proven to beone of the most beloved performers of all time. InNovember, Cole will release her second book, LoveBrought Me Back, chronicling her path to a kidneytransplant in 2009. Cole’s latest album, Still Unfor-gettable, garnered her two more Grammy awards forBest Traditional Pop Vocal Album and Best Instru-mental Accompanying Vocalist. It also earned Cole aNAACP Award for Best Jazz Artist.

Not to miss! This Beatles tribute band formed in1998 with five professional musicians based in NewYork City. John Nugent, XRIJF Founder, Artistic Director andCo-Producer, hails from St. John’s, Newfoundland,Canada. An accomplished tenor saxophonist, Nugentburnished his jazz skills at St. Francis Xavier Univer-sity, the Banff School of Fine Arts, and North TexasState University. He racked up years of touring experi-ence with the One O’Clock Lab Band and Woody Her-man Orchestra, and performed with Ella Fitzgerald,Mel Torme, Bob Hope and the Temptations. As a soloartist, Nugent has been performing with artists such asDavid Liebman, Randy Brecker, Frank Tiberi, Al Fosterand Billy Hart. He founded his own record label/man-agement company, NY JAM, INC. in 1994 and releasedseveral recordings on NY JAM, notably “West of Flat-bush” and “Rhythmicity,” as well as releases on otherlabels including “John Nugent,” “Taurus People” and“Live at The Blue Note.” This commissioned perform-ance, conducted by Dave Rivello, will include arrange-ments by Rivello with a trio rhythm section and 14strings.

Béla Fleck is often considered the premier banjoplayer in the world. A New York City native, hepicked up the banjo at age 15 after being awed by thebluegrass music of Flatt & Scruggs. The recipient of11 Grammy Awards and 27 nominations, he has beennominated in more different categories than anyonein Grammy history.

Since the release of When I Fall In Love, ChrisBotti has become the best selling American jazz in-strumental artist. His success has crossed over to au-diences usually reserved for pop music. His associ-ation with PBS has led to four No.1 Jazz Albums, andmultiple gold, platinum and Grammy awards. He hasrecorded and performed with the best in music in-cluding Frank Sinatra, Sting, Josh Groban, MichaelBuble, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, John Mayer, An-drea Bocelli, Joshua Bell and Steven Tyler.
June 16 at 8 p.m. k.d. lang and the Siss Boom Bang
k.d. lang is that rare performer. The Western Cana-da native launched her career with a blend of coun-try-rock stylings and playfully punk-like attitude, byturns whimsical and subversive; she practically putthe alternative in alt-country. Lang has collaboratedwith many pop and country performers, includingveteran crooner Tony Bennett, who may be her big-gest fan, saying, “She’s the best singer of her genera-tion.”
June 17 at 8 p.m. (SOLD OUT)Elvis Costello & the Imposters
Elvis Costello has followed his musical curiosity ina career spanning more than 30 years. Costello’ssongs have been recorded by numerous artists. In2003, he began a songwriting partnership with hiswife, the jazz pianist and singer Diana Krall. Costellohas received several prestigious honors, including aGrammy for “I Still Have That Other Girl.” Elvis Cos-tello and The Attractions were inducted into theRock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.
