Golden Jubilee Scholarship recipient Joseph Tan from Singapore completed a Bachelor of Industrial Design at the University of New South Wales (UNSW).

Plenty of people want to change the world, but for Singaporean student Joseph Louis Tan the motivation has always been very close to home.

Both his parents have post-polio and have been wheelchair-bound since childhood. Their struggle with daily activities has become his inspiration to innovate and improve products for people with disabilities.

That goal led the 24-year-old to the Bachelor of Industrial Design program at the University of New South Wales, supported by UNSW’s Golden Jubilee Scholarship which covers the tuition fees of bright students from selected Malaysian and Singaporean tertiary institutions.

“Having disabled parents makes me see the world through a different lens. I want to design products to improve the lives of people and make things easier and less painful for them.”

And he’s proved his empathy and ambition is matched by his skills and willingness to work hard. In 2007, he topped his year at Nanyang Polytechnic in Singapore, which qualified him for the Golden Jubilee Scholarship enabling him to pursue his design studies at UNSW.

In 2010 Joseph won first prize in a nationwide packaging design competition, the Cormack Innovation Awards. This won him 2,500 AUD in prize money and a three-month paid internship at Cormack. And last year, Joseph’s innovative ‘pull-apart’ modular coffee table design was shortlisted for the VIVID (Vibrant Visions in Design) Award in Melbourne.

The UNSW Faculty of Built Environment, in which he also served as Student Ambassador, encompasses a wide range of current and socially relevant fields. “The approach that UNSW takes to Industrial Design is very forward-looking with lecturers who are pioneers in their fields.”

He says his experience has been enriched by the multiculturalism he has encountered in Sydney. And, Joseph says he has taken advantage of the extra-curricular activities on offer which have also helped him come out of his shell.

He says his parents are very happy with him. “They are very proud and tell me to keep doing what I am doing. It’s a really good feeling.”
