This is an important decision for you that will pave the way to global involvement, leadership opportunities and future successes. No pressure! While the search will largely involve the student, I recognize that parents will play a significant role in this decision, too.

Throughout this booklet you will find helpful information to assist you in exploring college opportunities. The pages within address many of the activities experienced during the college search process. Along the way, you will also discover the unique aspects UNT and Denton have to offer, which make us a great choice for a college home. With 97 bachelor’s degrees, over 400 student organizations and our Division I athletic programs, there is something for everyone at the University of North Texas.

The Student Financial Aid and Scholarships office has many options to help you pay for college. Be sure to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the priority date. Work-study programs and some scholarships are based on those results.

The Student Financial Aid and Scholarships office handles most of the UNT scholarships for incoming students. Students automatically compete for a limited number of renewable scholarships based on academic success in high school or at your previous college. We’ll pull your admission application for review, so no application is necessary.

UNT Phi Theta Kappa Texas Transfer Scholarships are available to PTK Honor Society members transferring from a Texas community college or an accredited Texas university with 45 or more attempted credit hours beginning Fall 2009. No need to submit an application, your records will be pulled for evaluation. There are awards for students with a 3.5 GPA or greater.

If you’ve heard of UNT, then you’ve probably heard about our music program. Of the music students, 13% are international and 27% are from out-of-state. UNT was the first university in the nation to offer a degree in jazz , and our Jazz Studies division is one of the best in the world. Our faculty of highly acclaimed performers, composers, scholars and researchers is dedicated to teaching a diverse student body, whether in private lessons, small and large ensembles, or classrooms.

Ensembles range from orchestra, chorus, opera and jazz, to vocal, instrumental, early music and steel bands. And don’t forget our famous Green Brigade marching band. Performance group auditions are open to all UNT students.

Honors College members have access to smaller, discussion-based courses, special events, priority registration, and a strong network of faculty and staff. We have more than 1,650 current members, which makes us the largest honors college in the DFW area. To join, you must have at least a 1200 on the math and verbal sections of the SAT or a 27 on the ACT and must also rank in the top 10% of your high school class. If you’re a transfer student, you must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.35 on all college work and fewer than 72 hours completed.

It’s the first college stadium to use on-site re-newable energy (via wind turbines) and the first in the nation to be platinum LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified. HOUSINGYour home away from home. Your first taste of independence. With 13 residence halls across campus, there are plenty of options to find one that suits you. Standard in UNT halls are a community common area with TVs and games, study areas, a computer lab, laundry facilities and a manned front desk. Housing staff work hard to keep the 5,700 residents involved in campus life with programming, Hall Associations, REAL communities, campus-wide housing competitions and year-long events that range from the domestic (like cookie baking and movies) to the ridiculous (ever played Assassin or life-sized Angry Birds?).

DININGWith the swipe of an ID card, a meal plan holder has access to five “buffet-style” dining halls, each with its own cuisine. The nationally recognized Mean Greens cafeteria is all-vegan (but not just for vegans) and Bruce Cafeteria serves delicious home-style cooking. If you want a job after college (and most of us do), be sure to attend one of the regularly scheduled Career Fairs. They’re located all over campus, from the Coliseum and Discovery Park to the Career Center’s home in Chestnut Hall.
