Dear Friend,

Greengs from the Secretariat of Indian Biodiversity Congress (IBC)!

Biological diversity‐ the rich tapestry of life and its intricately interlaced phenomena, processes, and relaonships‐underpins the basic fabrics for the sustenance of life and the essenal pillars for sustainable development. The fabricof interdependent and mutually reinforcing strands of biological, cultural, linguisc, and instuonal diversies hasfrayed primarily because of human‐induced changes, leading to mass exncon of species and loss of ecosystem

funcons and services. There is a growing recognion that humankind, as Albert Einstein observed, “cannot solve problems in the sameway of thinking that led to their creaon.” A new way of thinking, a paradigm shi, is required to keep the web of life in tact so that itcan connue to provide the essenal raw materials for sustainable development. United Naons declared the period 2011 – 2020to be “the United Naons Decade on Biodiversity, with a view to contribung to the implementaon of the Strategic Plan forBiodiversity for the period 2011‐2020”. The Decade is intended to be a vehicle to support and promote implementaon of theobjecves of this synergisc Strategic Plan for Biodiversity and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, and to mainstream biodiversi ty issuesinto broader development planning and in the economic sectors.

Indian Biodiversity Congress (IBC) is the largest get together of sciensts, conservaonists, environmentalists, civil society groups andlocal communies in India, a plaorm to discuss the current status of biodiversity in India and an inclusive colloquium to for wardstrategies and policies to conserve the rich biodiversity heritage of the country. The major objecve of IBC is to formulate a vision andalternate strategic plan for the conservaon of biodiversity in the context of prevailing concept of “development at ANY cost”. The Firstand Second IBCs were organised at Thiruvananthapuram (2010) and Bengaluru (2012) respecvely. IBC has now become a regularevent in India, with an array of programmes aached to it including seminars, exhibion, workshops, naonal photography exhi bion, civil society meet, documentary film fesval and Children’s Biodiversity Conclave besides a series of satellite and side events.

The third Indian Biodiversity Congress is scheduled at Chennai, a major cultural, economic and educaonal centre in the countryduring 18‐20 December 2014. This year the focal theme for seminar is “Biodiversity for Poverty Eradicaon” and for theExhibion “Cultural Biodiversity of India”.

We welcome you all to the third Indian Biodiversity Congress at Chennai and thank you for your connued support.

IBC 2014

Venue : SRM University, Kaankulathur Campus, Chennai

The UN General Assembly declared the period 2011‐2020 as United Naons Decade on Biodiversity to promote the implementaon of a strategic plan on biodiversity and its overall vision of living in harmony with nature. There is a beer realisaon now that ensuring truly sustainable development for our growing human family depends on biological diversity and the vital goods and services it offers and therefore humanity should live in harmony with nature and to preserve and properly manage its riches for the prosperity of current and future generaons. It is also the period in which the government has to take concerted efforts to achieve “Aichi Target” or the 2011‐2020 Strategic Plan of the Convenon on Biological Diversity for addressing the underly ing causes of biodiversity loss, reduce the pressures on biodiversity, safeguard biodiversity at all levels, enhance the benefits provided by biodiversity, and provide for capacity‐

building. The third Indian Biodiversity Congress (IBC 2014) is being organised at Chennai and this year the focal theme for seminar i s “B iodivers i ty for Poverty Eradicaon” and for the Exhibion “Cultural Biodiversity of India”. In the context of Strategic Plan biodiversity should be integrated into overarching goals addressing broad concepts such as poverty eradicaon, an inclusive “green economy”, human well‐being, and sustainable development. Further, specific biodiversity related targets and indicators should be integrated into Goals on food security and nutrion, water and health, which makes the focal theme relevant. Biodiversity interacts with modern and tradional knowledge and with people's identy, contribung to protect and enhance cultural diversity. As CPR Environmental Educaon Centre is working on this aspect for the last 25 years, cultural biodiversity of India has been selected as the theme for the Expo.

CIVIL SOCIETY MEET

Civil Society Organizaons (CSOs), including non‐governmental organizaons (NGOs), faith‐based organizaons, indigenous peoples organisaons, social / people’s movements, professional associaons and foundaons, labour unions, and others, and totally commied individuals who are not part of any ‘system’, are crical actors in the conservaon iniaves. Their involvement in discussions and policy making would definitely give proper direcons to the future conservaon paradigms and policy making.

IBC desires to have partnership with CSOs and indiv iduals commied to b iodivers i ty conservaon, as we believe that these partnerships are imperave to the success of the programme. Many CSOs have a proven capacity for broad‐based mobilizaon and creang boom‐up demand that fosters responsive governance. Civil society advocacy can facilitate the parcipaon of those very much concerned with conservaon and

sustainable ulizaon of biodiversity in the design and implementaon of development policies and programmes. This can enhance the delivery of basic social and environmental services, which are very much essenal for the future biodiversity conservaon scenario of the country. Moreover, members of civil society organizaons volunteer their me, skills, and experse to development. In the recent environmental conservaon history of the country, the role played by CSOs towards biodiversity conservaon has a bright history. One day of IBC 2014 will be dedicated for the meet, while the members will also get the opportunity to aend IBC for all the days. The recommendaons of Civil Society Meet will also form part of IBC recommendaons.

The CSOs can join the enre meet for three days with a registraon fee of Rs. 1,500/‐. They can also present papers in IBC 2014.

The purpose of the Conclave is to raise awareness on issues related with biodiversity and to encourage the children to take acon in protecng and using these important resources wisely, as the young generaon is the powerful force for the preservaon of biodiversity. If the business‐as‐usual scenario prevails in the modern era of biodiversity loss, the status of our biodiversity wealth will be in jeopardy. As a large number of leading sciensts and conservaonists will aend IBC, the students will get an opportunity to interact with them and to learn from their experience. In addion, there will be awareness workshops and compeons for students to learn more about biodiversity during the conclave.Since the total number of student parcipants aending the program is limited, students will be selected based on compeons arranged during earlier phase and based on their involvement in ecoclub/ NGC acvies. In addion, a series of compleons will be arranged at the venue.
