The month of October is again filled with multiple events. However, I want to stress the importance of testing as we have multi-ple state-wide and standardized tests admin-istered throughout the month of October. Before and during testing it is crucial that your student has optimal rest, is well nour-ished, and is focused on doing well on their tests.

NWEA Testing (measures student progress) – October 12th – 19th.

Oct. 12, 2015 Freshmen: 8:30am – 2:15pm

Oct. 12, 2015 Juniors:12:45pm - 3:15pm

Oct. 13, 2015 Sophomores: 8:30am-2:15pm

Oct. 14, 2015 7th grade: 8:30am – 10:55am

Oct. 14, 2015 8th grade: 12:45pm –3:15pm

Oct. 15, 2015 8th grade: 8:30am – 10:55am

Oct. 15, 2015 7th grade: 12:45 – 3:15pm

PSAT Testing measures skills in three basic academic areas (critical reading, math prob-lem-solving, writing skills) important for success in college.

Oct. 14, 2015 Juniors: 8:30am – 12:15pm

North Dakota State Assessment (science) measure how well they are meeting grade-level expectations according to North Dako-ta education standards.

Oct. 26th, 2015 8th grade: During science class with Mrs. Kuntz

Oct. 26th, 2015 Juniors: During science class with Mrs. Stromsborg and Mrs. Kuntz

Reminder: I want to remind you that teach-ers have web pages that are linked through our Richardton-Taylor High School home page at https://sites.google.com/a/richardton-taylor.k12.nd.us/richardton-taylor-high/. On the left hand side of the home page, there is a link that says “Lesson Plans”. When you click on this link, you can choose a teacher and review lesson plans for the week.

Use these lesson plans to help guide your child with his/her studies. Con-sistency between teachers and parents will provide the best educational struc-ture for your student.

Parent-Teacher Conferences are coming up! Parent-teacher conferences will be held October 13, and 14th from 4:00pm – 7:00pm. The Richardton-Taylor High School has student-led conferences which takes place at an appointed time and includes the stu-dent, parents or guardians, and a home-room teacher that supported the stu-dent in preparing for the conference. I want to stress the importance of parent-teacher conferences in providing con-sistent support by both teachers and parents/guardians.

If a student and parent/guardian miss-es a student-led conference, students will be scheduled to meet with the sec-ondary principal to provide students with a student-led conference.

Some concerns have been brought to our attention regarding parents that may want to visit with multiple class-room teachers following student-led conferences.

Page 2

Principal Continued….

October Newsletter

In meeting student and parent needs we are providing both the student-led conference and time allotted where parents/guardians may visit with classroom teachers.

There will be time in between ap-pointed student-led conferences where students and par-ents/guardians may visit classroom teachers to further discuss student progress. I also want to express that the Richardton-Taylor School teach-ers are willing to support students consistently throughout the year so please be active with your student’s learning and contact teachers at your convenience as concerns may arise or if you want to discuss stu-dent progress. You may call the school to set up a time to meet with a teacher, contact a teacher through email, or converse by phone. Let’s be proactive together regarding your child’s learning. I look forward to seeing you at conferences!

HOMECOMING WEEK

2015

Page 8: Untitled

First of all, I would like to remind everyone that we have changed our parent/teacher conferences to Tuesday, November 3rd and Thursday, November 5th. This will enable us to have the results of the students NWEA tests and their first quarter grades. We might even have the results of the state assessment that some of the students took last year. You should have received your child/ren’s mid-term grades so I hope that if you have any questions or concerns you have contacted his/her teacher. We will also be hosting a book fair during conferences.

Now that we are in the autumn season, please send appropriate clothing for your child/ren. Remember that if the temperature is below 50 degrees, the stu-dents need a jacket. This information is in the hand-book that you should have received from your child/ren. I hope you have taken time to read through it because there have been some important changes. Please keep the handbook handy so if your child/ren has any questions about rules and regulations at the school, you could find the answer for him/her. If you have any questions about the information in the handbook, please call me.

As the 4/5/6 girls basketball season ends, I would like to thank Coach Rummel for all of his time and dedication to the program. Also, thank you to the parents for all of the time and effort you sacrifice to have your child on the team. Congratulations girls on a season of growth and fun. It is now time to gear up for the boys basketball season which begins on October 2nd.

I hope you have been busy helping your child/ren sell goodies for the Club Choice fundraiser spon-sored by PAWS. We receive about 45% of the mon-ey that is raised by the students to put back into items that will benefit the students at TRE. If you are new to TRE and would like to be involved in our parent group, the next meeting is September 29 at 6:00 p.m. here at TRE. It was great to see a couple new faces at the previous meeting.

Thanks you to all the ladies that come in to volun-teer on Wednesdays. You are definitely an asset to us. A special thanks to Pepper Stutzman and Judy Roll for taking the time to come in and help us with

vision checks and pictures. Anyone who would like to volunteer is always welcome.

October will be a busy month as was September. I would also like to thank Buck and Bev Haas for their hospitality and the sharing of their knowledge when the sixth grade class, along with Mrs. Messer, Mrs. Hoff, Mrs. Bartz and myself went on a field trip to the old Taylor Nursery and Art Depot. It was a very educational and fun experience. The sixth grade class was also given the opportunity to learn about animals of North Dakota, especially the mountain lion, when they were visited by a game warden from the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. K-6 students were treated to “Traveling with Lewis and Clark” by Tom Gibson who was sponsored by the Central Stark and West-ern Soil Conservation District. These were just a few of the many activities for the past month.

The students will have to put on their testing hats for October because the K-6 students will be taking the NWEA assessments beginning on October 12 and ending November 13, and the fourth grade students will also have to take the CTBS science assessment shortly after October 19. I hope all the students work very hard to do their best on the as-sessments, and parents we ask that you do your part in making sure your child has enough rest and has a good breakfast so they are able to focus on the as-sessments.

Please make sure you check out the entire news-letter for upcoming events. Please let us know at TRE if you have any-thing special that we can celebrate with your child/ren or if you have any concerns. Please contact the teacher/s if you have questions or concerns about your child/ren. The best time to contact them are from 8:00 – 8:25 in the morning or from 3:15 – 3:30 in the afternoon. Communication is the key to success.

It’s great to be back in school and our first project was creating time capsules. Students designed their own capsule and filled it with a string to measure height, a wishing rock, a photo, a writing example and drawings of their footprint and handprint. In addition, they wrote down their favorites, such as food, movies, music, etc. and are anxious to see if these favorites change at the end of the year. It’s so much fun to open the time capsules in May and not only see how much they’ve changed physically, but also academically. We are looking forward to a fun filled year of learning and working on our own personal goals in third grade. Please visit anytime, we would love to have you.

Click on the title above to access Building Readers or look for the link on the new TRE webpage at www.richardton-taylor.k12.nd.us, listed under the TRE links “Building Readers”.

On September 18, sixth grade students hiked over to the former Taylor Nursery

for a field trip. Buck Haas shared his knowledge and leaves to help the students

with their leaf collections. Students were able to pick leaves from about thirty

various trees. They were also treated to ripe pears straight from the pear tree!

After they returned to school the students pressed their leaves. Many thanks to

Buck Haas and his wife, Bev, for continuing to open their nursery and art studio

to our young people.
