QUESTION 2HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR

MAIN PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TEXTS?

Page 2: Untitled media

ANCILLARY ONE My ancillary texts were based on the Indie Rock genre as this was the

genre of the song my group and I had chosen for our music video, ‘Sweet

Disposition’ by the Temper Trap. Front and Back Cover

Original Idea

My original idea was to draw out an image and have it overlaying a

scenic background after seeing Florence and the Machines album art

work for album ‘Lungs’. I liked the quirkiness of the diagram of a pair of

lung that featured on the back of the album, and thought I could create

my own drawing to make my album art more Indie.

However, I didn't decide to stick with this idea

as with the photographs I had to work with, I

was more influence by Tame Impalas

magazine advert due to subject matter. Also,

as I chose to use a layering technique for my

ancillary, it allowed me to create a busier

background that is aesthetically pleasing. I

also used a strip of masking tape overlay to

give an edge to my album art, creating a

more indie styled piece.

For my inside images, I used photographs such as the one taken on a bus in Leeds, and a local sunset

photograph over-lay with stills from the music video itself from the firework scene. I think these images are quite

quirky and will appear attractive to the viewer.

Synergy is created between my ancillary digipak and final music video through the merger of stills of fireworks

taken from video itself, with photographs of my own used on digipak. I thought this would be a good way to

emphasise the relation between both products visually, aiming to make the combination of the products more

effective. I speak further into this on a further slide.

Two Inside Double-Spread For Digipak

Page 6: Untitled media

A lot of indie digipak have few words

and aesthetically pleasing images

throughout their album artwork, as

minimalism appears to be key.

I tried to explore this scenic indie vibe,

however put my own twist on it by

merging different scenic shots together

to see what worked, aiming to create

busier, more exciting images that

would match the busy style of our

music video.

When creating my digipak, I also

added a muted grey filter on top of all

of the image to reduce the vibrancy in

order to suit the ending of the music

video, during the firework scenes, and

for a clear link to be drawn between the

products.

I found it hard to design a style of

digipak I wanted based on the

locations of the video, so I infused

photographs that were similar subject

matter to our music video, e.g. car and

bus rides and car lights in the dark, to

ensure that the relation between the

products was kept clear.

Magazine Advert Influences

In my ancillary 2, for my magazine advert I was influenced by Coldplays ‘Mylo Xyloto’ layout. I liked how the album title was

positioned in the centre of the advertisement, in front of a lively background that catches the eye. I also liked the positioning of

the bold band name, above the album name. I think this stood out really well. I also added the date underneath the album

name similar to Coldplays advertisement, as I liked how the audiences attention would immediately follow onto the release

date, encouraging sales. I was also influenced by Tame Impala’s magazine advert for their debut album ‘Feels Like We’re Only

Going Backwards’. I liked the positioning of the detailed text, stating information on singles and websites. I incorporated this

layout in my own magazine advert. I also liked how Tame Impala’s background image was of a scenic shot, creating an

aesthetic image which is appealing to the audience. I used similar images myself but with a twist of merging several different

photographs together to create a busier image as oppose to just one of the sunset. This way, I was able to incorporate stills

taken from the music video, such as the fireworks, to make the poster more relatable and also creating synergy between the

products. I think the merging of a sunset and fireworks was an odd combination, but it proved to work in my favour as the

image is eye-catching and lively.

Page 9: Untitled media

I tried to create consistency through out my projects by using stills from the video

within my magazine advert and album digipak. I thought this was a good way of

combining the two media products together to make them more relatable. This

also makes the colour schemes fall into sync, as the end section of our music

video is dark clips with bright lights such as fireworks and fairground attractions.

By using a dimmed shot infused with the glow from either a traffic light or firework,

the products become similar and relatable, creating an effective combination.

I also used the same font that I used within my ancillaries for the font of the title

sequence of our groups music video. The font is called ‘hello goodbye’ and by

using this text in both projects, I have created synergy between the products.

Page 10: Untitled media

Overall, I think the combination of my ancillary and final music video is effective as they relate well to each

other due to synergy between the products through relatable images, colour schemes and font style.

I also think that my projects relate well to the genre of indie rock as the quirky use of adding a masking tape

title onto the ancillaries, and the stereotypical style of handwritten font give off an indie vibe to the products.

Also, the fragmented narrative style of the music video relates well to an indie genre despite defying

conventions of the performance side some indie rock videos show.

I think my ancillary products appear rather

professional in comparison to existing products,

as it shows I have taken into account the layout

of my product as well as the aesthetic appeal.

target adolescence audience. My main product

continues the fun and lively style of my magazine

advert shown through the incorporation of

firework shots which are seen through out the

ending of our video.

A difficulty I found with relating my ancillary to

my main product was that as my video

progressively goes from light to dark; one image

cannot capture the whole style of the video.

Therefore, I chose to model my ancillaries

around the ending of my video.

I also think our

final music video

represents the

indie genre well,

as the narrative

style shows the

innocence of youth

and is relatable to

the
