The area of Lavrion is considered as a geo‐technological laboratory; together with  other  values  it  comprises  a wealth  of minerals. Mineral  names  as Lavriotite, Kamarizite, Ktenasite, Thorikozite, Serpierite originated from the area of Lavrion; All the above mentioned  facts witness  the  special geological‐mineralogical  setting and geodiversity of the area under concern.

In  addition  and  intimately  interconnected  with  it,  the  archeological  and cultural setting, as well as the biotic environment are of outstanding beauty and designated as international values.

For  all  above  reasons  Lavreotiki  area  is  considered  as  a  geological, natural  and  cultural  heritage  of  international  significance  that  can  be appreciated  through  conservation,  education  and  geotourism  and  our Commission supports  the application  to  the European and Global Geoparks Networks.

Letter of support to the Official application for Lavreotiki region to join the European

and UNESCO Global Geoparks Networks

The Greek Section of the International Committee for the Conservation of Industrial

Heritage (TICCIH) strongly supports the official application for the Lavreotiki geopark to be

included in the European and UNESCO Global geoparks networks as it is an area of

outstanding values famous worldwide.

The proposed Lavreotiki Geopark has been identified with mine exploitation and

metallurgical activities since antiquity and especially Classical Era, and has always played a

key role in the technological, economic and political development of Greece and the culture

and civilization of the whole world.

The Greek Section of the International Committee for the Conservation of Industrial

Heritage (TICCIH) fully agrees for the submission of the request to European Geoparks and

UNESCO Global Geoparks Secretariat, and for the implementation of the management plan

Athens, 25 February 2010

Dear Madams,

The Urban Environment Laboratory-National Technical University of Athens, and myself personally, as research coordinator of the project “Mining and Metallurgical Museum of Lavrion”, we strongly support the official application for the Lavreotiki geopark, to be listed as European and UNESCO Global geopark.

The proposed Lavreotiki Geopark is famous worldwide, being the centre of Greek ancient and modern mining.

We believe that the proposed geopark, will be an important inland and a surrounding zone for the excellent architectural and industrial monuments, located in the city of Lavrion and the Lavreotiki Region. The Lavreotiki Region is already a protected natural reserve and a nominated archaeological park, by the Greek Ministry of Culture. We fully agree for the submission of the request to European Geoparks and UNESCO Global Geoparks Secretariat, and for the implementation of the management plan which will guarantee the quality and the effectiveness of nature conservation, geotourism activities and sustainable development in the region.

Sincerely yours,

Dr Nikos Belavilas
