3 Voluntary Trumpet –September 2015

Dean’s List Greetings, fellow organists!

Ah…another year is upon us. Vacations are end-ing, school is starting, and, in the immortal words from “Grease,” “summer dreams are fadin’ away.” I hope you all had summers that left you relaxed and refreshed, and that you had myriad chances to enjoy the things you love most. I was blessed to take a trip to St. Martin with my wife, Jessica, as we celebrated our 10th anniversary, and a family trip to Mt. Desert Island, Maine, where we enjoyed the spectacular Acadia National Park. On the professional side of things, the Augsburg Fortress Summer Workshop in Columbia brought some wonderful composers and clinicians to our state in July, and I was able to participate in a John Fergu-son (St. Olaf) hymn festival and sing in a massed choir directed by Eric Nelson (Atlanta Festival Cho-rale, Emory University). It was a packed summer indeed! My first order of business this year is to extend to you the warmest of invitations to join us for our first gathering of the year. Entitled “Meet, Greet, and Eat”, it will take place on September 14. We will be gathering at The Original Ms. Rose’s Fine Food and Cocktails in West Ashley and it’s sure to be a fun night of great dinner, drinks, and con-versation. Directories will be available, introduc-tions will be made, and Sub-Dean Jason Pedeaux and I will once again be running our organ trivia game! Please respond to Ed LeRoy, whose email you should have already received, to reserve a spot and choose your entree. Jason and the board have been hard at work this summer planning a wonderful slate of pro-grams this year that we hope you’ll enjoy. We’ve got everything from a hymn playing workshop at St. Matthew’s to a choral rehearsal techniques program at CSU; from the annual Epiphany par-ty at Doug Ludlum’s house to a hymn festival (still in the planning stages) presented by one of the country’s best known organists. Please peruse the year’s schedule in this month’s newsletter, and mark your calendars! If you’re not a member who regularly attends our meetings, why not make it

a goal to join us more often? We’d love to meet you. You’ll find our meetings are great places to network, share concerns, trade ideas, learn some-thing new, or just relax with a bunch of folks who probably have quite a lot in common with you! Finally, please help David make the Voluntary Trumpet the best it can be by sending him your calendar items, announcements, and vacant po-sitions by the 20th of each month for inclusion in the following month’s edition.

See you on September 14! [email protected]

AnnouncementsBefore You Buy More Music, Check Out The AGO Free Music Exchange! There is much music in the AGO Music Exchange —more than 400 listings for organ solo alone: There are works by individual composers and col-lections, in addition to over 50 for Christmas, sev-eral for Weddings and Funerals; plus Piano; Duets; General Music Books; Organ Plus (1 or 2 instru-ments). It’s a 4 drawer file cabinet, full. A pdf cata-log is available by email: [email protected]. Still in process of being cataloged are a couple of hundred choral anthems and solo songs. If you need it, chances are it’s there. The catalog isn’t complete, but if you’re interested, email me and I’ll send what I have. As always, you are welcome to come, browse, play through (there’s a piano there), take what you want, leave any music you no longer need (you don’t have to bring music to take music). The exchange is located upstairs in the sanctu-ary building at Second Presbyterian Church, 342 Meeting Street in downtown Charleston. Available during business hours (M-F 9–4). Please contact Ju-lia Harlow, [email protected] or 843–870–1048 to schedule a time (so someone at the church can let you in). If you absolutely cannot get there during business hours but are interested, let me know and I’ll try to work with your schedule. Feel free to get music for your students as well. St. Matthew’s Saturday Noontime Concert SeriesBeginning September 19, St. Matthew’s Luther-an Church, 405 King Street, will offer a series of 30 minute noonday concerts in the Nave of the church. The concerts are free to all and will be held during the weekly Saturday market in Mar-ion Square. Concerts may be offered in any me-dium: voice, choral, piano, instrumental, or St. Matthew’s refurbished 62 rank Austin organ. The church has just completed a two-year renovation project that saw carpet removed from the center aisle and marble installed in its place. The acoustic has been vastly improved. Please contact Doug Ludlum at [email protected] if you wish to play on the series this fall.

Tours of the church by qualified docents will be of-fered at the conclusion of each concert.

AppointmentsHuey Waldon has been hired as the new music director and organist for First United Methodist Church, Isle of Palms.

St. Luke’s Recital SeriesThere are many openings on the fall series at St. Luke’s Chapel that need to be filled. September 15, October 6 and October 20 have been taken. For those of you who have not yet confirmed your dates, please do so immediately. Barbara needs to publish the schedule by September 1.
