President’s Message
2 June 2014
Greetings all,
Saskatoon chapter is also holding their 40th anniversary this year with the main
event – a river cruise up and down the South Saskatchewan River – on June 17,
2014. Donna and I plan to attend. Congratulations Saskatoon!
Your UOAC board of directors met online on April 10, 2014. A great many
items were discussed. Major items approved include:
the start of the annual audit
distribution of the new services brochure
2016 conference location
UOAC has designed a new services brochure. Thanks to Ann Ivol, Andy Man-
son and Lisa Gausman for the great new look. The brochure is available now
and is free of charge to all chapters that would like one (or more). Please contact
the UOAC office to order yours today!
There are several new appointments that I would like to announce:
Angie Schickerowski as our new webmaster. She is designing a new
website which should be ready for the public to view in the next few weeks.
Andrea (Andy) Manson as our new leader of the Public Awareness/
World Ostomy Day/Canada Ostomy Day Committee.
Rosemary Gaffray as our new leader of the Bursary committee. We will
be announcing our bursary program in the next few weeks.
Mark your calendars now – the 2nd Annual Canada Ostomy Day will be held
the first Saturday in October, 2014. We extend an invitation to all chapters
across Canada to join in the Stoma Stroll Awareness Walk. We created a
twelve page procedure manual and have sent it to all chapter presidents. UOAC

will set up the walk webpage for your city, provide you with posters, postcards and pledge sheets, provide you
with a certificate of insurance, and pay for approved expenses such as permits and first aid staff.
As well, we have continued with the Virtual Walk. What do I mean by a virtual walk? Well, if your chapter is
not hosting a Stoma Stroll, or if you are too far away to attend, you can still do a walk in your own commu-
nity. Simply go to the website: www.stomastroll.ca and look on the right-hand side and then click on Virtual
Walk. Then click on the link that says Register Now. You can ask your friends and family to support you
through email or social media, or there is a pledge form on the website that you can print out and distribute to
all your sponsors. What a great way to raise awareness and much needed funds to support the great things that
UOAC is planning in the next few years.
The board of directors will continue to hold monthly online meetings (usually a Saturday at 8:00 a.m. CST).
Any chapter president that is interested in sitting in as an observer is welcome. Please send an email to the of-
fice or me to get an invitation. Our next online meeting is Saturday, June 21.
I’ve sent a letter to all Ontario chapter presidents announcing the formation of an ad hoc committee between
members of the United Ostomy Association of Canada and Ostomy Toronto to advocate for an increase in the
Assistive Devices Program (ADP) Grant. A petition was presented to the legislature before the election was
called. We are continuing to ask for signatures so that more petitions can be presented once the government
resumes sitting. The deadline for signing the petition is August 1st. They are available at most ostomy retailers
in Ontario. If your retailer does not have one, you can print one out from our website.
A great many chapters are doing fund-raising to support sending youth to UOAC Ostomy Youth Camp.
Ostomy Toronto members Jim Fitzgerald and Jason Boyd are embarking on a journey called “GI J's - No Guts
No Glory 2 guys 2 ostomies 130 km race” by paddling a canoe for 130 km. UOAC has been involved in their
fund-raising activities and have set up a fund-raising webpage at: http://ostomycanada.akaraisin.com/
nogutsnoglory. They have set an ambitious goal of $25,000 and are already 27% of the way there! You can
purchase bracelets on the website to show your support. We have also opened up the fund-raising website
so that anyone can register to be a participant. You do not need to paddle, just help spread the word and
help raise donations. Good Luck Jim and Jason!
Our upcoming biennial conference will be in St. John’s Newfoundland from July 31 to August 2, 2014. Our
conference administrator is Delilah Guy, conference chair is Carol Wells. The St. John’s and Gander chapters
are working together to put on a great conference. We hope to see you all there and take some time to tour
around the “Rock” and enjoy the unique experience that is Newfoundland. Conference and hotel registration
forms are already on our website, along with links to websites that show some of the other things you can go
see when you visit Newfoundland. The link is: http://ostomycanada.ca/events/biennial_conference_of_uoac
Again this year we will be asking for donations from individuals and chapters for raffle and auction items.
And we are asking chapters for advertisements or well wishes for the program book. Janet Paquet has agreed
to do the program book this year. The theme is “Ostomates Connect on the Rock”. Hope to see you there!

Things to do in St. John’s, NL
The Battery is a small neighbourhood within the city of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Battery sits on the entrance to the harbour located on the slopes of Signal Hill. Sometimes de-scribed as an outport within the city of St. John's. The area is noted for its steep slopes, colourful houses, and its importance as a battery for the defence of St. John's Harbour in both World Wars.
The Battery is home to Chain Rock, a land outcropping to which a large chain and anti-submarine boom were attached connecting to Fort Amherst in order to prevent the entry of German U-boats into the harbour during World War II. Chain Rock is one of two rocks located on opposite sides of the Narrows, Chain Rock on the battery side and Pancake Rock on the opposite. The space between the two rocks is 174 metres. Chain Rock and Pancake Rock were used as early as 1770.[1] A defensive chain was stretched between both rocks by means of a capstan at nightfall to prevent illegal entry of enemy ships. During World War I the chain was replaced with anti-submarine nets.
Another historic property in the area is Anderson House located at 42 Powers Court in the Battery as it is believed to be the oldest structure in the city of St. John's
Quidi Vidi Brewery Amongst the tranquility, at the mouth of the harbour, sits Quidi Vidi Brewery Company. Formerly Cabot Seafood’s fish plant, the building has undergone extensive renovations. There are a number of things that set this local brewery apart from the national breweries. The design and location of the plant are deeply connected to the local roots of its founders.
Fondly referred to as “The Gut” by locals, Quidi Vidi Village is one of Newfoundland’s best kept secrets. Situated in the heart of St. John’s, this rustic and historic fishing village manages to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. With its green spruce clapboard and white trim it looks comfortably at home within the rustic surroundings of the village.
One of the brewery’s distinct features is that we are brewing beer the way it was made over 30 years ago. Head Brew master Roy Ralph explains “We’re brewing malt beer with all natural ingredients, much like our forefathers did, but we have the added advantage of modern technology and state of the art equipment.”
Another significant difference at Quidi Vidi Brewing Company is the breweries open door policy. Owners and staff encourage group calls to make arrangements for brewery tours and sampling.
“We are always happy to showcase our brewery to anyone who has an interest in local business suc-cess, good beer, and warm Newfoundland hospitality.”

Chapter Information on the Website
Did you know that our website www.ostomycanada.ca had over a half million hits last year? A lot of the visi-
tors visited the website to look for a support group in their area. Therefore, it is important that this information
be kept up to date! Make sure when sending the information in to the UOAC office that the chapters’ contact
information is current - phone number, email contact, newsletter availability, website, annual dues, meeting
dates and times. Visit our chapters page on our website at http://www.ostomycanada.ca/chapters and let the
UOAC office know via email if any of the information needs to be updated. We’ve had at least one chapter
past president contact the office to tell us that the website still included their phone number instead of the cur-
rent president. Please check your chapter’s listing to make sure the updates have been done correctly!

Things to do in St. John’s Signal Hill Tattoo is an internationally known award winning historical animation program. Each summer, audiences thrill to the echo of the cannon, mortars and musket fire combined with the stirring tunes of the Fife and Drum Band which beckons visitors to a bygone age of 19th Century British military might. Set atop famous Signal Hill, the Tattoo portrays the garrison life and duties of His Majesty’s Royal Newfoundland Regiment of Foot and the 27th Company-2nd Battalion-Royal Regiment of Artillery who endured the harsh conditions of the Newfoundland Station in the late 1790’s. Since its inception in 1967, thousands of young men and women have profited greatly from the military training they received as members of the Signal Hill Tattoo Historical Animation Program. More importantly, these same people have contributed in great measure to their own communities from attributes instilled through Tattoo training in leadership, citizenship and community involvement. Each summer upwards of sixty five young men and women of high school age are employed and undertake an intensive training program in the military tactics of a British Infantry Regiment. Commencing in early July, the Signal Hill Tattoo is held each Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday and features a military extravaganza of 18th century British linear military manoeuvres.
Performances are Wed., Thurs., Sat., & Sun., - July & August. Weather Permitting 11am & 3pm

EDITORS MESSAGE
As you read this, hopefully your bags will be at least half-packed for the trip to St. John’s NL and the 14th
UOAC conference.
Anticipate a great conference.
There are excellent speakers, wonderful banquets, colorful ceremonies, stellar people slated to receive na-
tional awards, and, of course, hospitality the likes of which you probably have never experienced.
Newfoundlanders are warm, welcoming folk. That’s because, being isolated at one end of the country, they
see so few people during the year that when someone new arrives on their shores, the visitors are showered
with affection – and Newfoundland screech. That signature Newfoundland rum concoction alone will make
your trip worthwhile.
However, let me tell you about the Bertha Okun Lectureship speaker who will appear Friday August 1. It will
be a conference highlight.
American comedian, author, and national speaker Brenda Elsagher will make her second appearance at a
UOAC conference and, if the first time was an indication, she will have you rolling in the aisles with laughter,
yet leave you with a message that you can live happily ever after with an Ostomy.
Brenda brings a joyful message in the face of adversity. At age 39, Brenda was diagnosed with colorectal can-
cer which gave her an opportunity to re-evaluate her life, to have more adventure, deeper relationships, and
more fun.
Every day became important and every hour became a choice on how she wanted to live it. A small business
woman for many years, she pursued her love of comedy only to find out that it was keynote speaking that was
her passion and destiny.
Her second look at life helped her to begin college at age 42, where she discovered the love of writing. She
has since written several books, all dealing with a glimpse of life from the funny side. Brenda writes a humor-
ous medical column, a blog, and now texts regularly, a requirement made by two children in college.
Finish packing today! Come to Newfoundland and live it up with other ostomates and friends from across the
country.
There’s still time to register, get a cheap flight, and have the wonderful conference experience you deserve.
AND - Don’t forget to pack your Ostomy supplies in your carry-on.

By-laws Update
The Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act provides federal not-for-
profit corporations with a new set of rules that are modern, flexible
and better suited to the needs of today's not-for-profit sector. Our by-
laws committee is preparing a Special Resolution on Continuance
for approval of new articles and bylaws at the AGM in St. John’s in
2014.
When approved, this will allow Ostomy Canada to continue to func-
tion in much the same way as UOAC does now, subject to the new
Act.
If rejected, however, UOAC will lose its certification on October 17,
2014. To put it bluntly, voting NO means that you want UOAC to
shut down, close its doors and be out of business.
The proposed Bylaws, which have been reviewed by our legal advi-
sor, had been sent to each chapter president. On March 8, all inter-
ested parties attended an on-line conference to discuss the feedback
from the chapters. The minutes of that meeting have been circulated
to all chapters.
The Bylaws Committee reviewed the feedback of that on-line meet-
ing and drafted revised bylaws and they were accepted by the Board
at the April 12 online board meeting. The accepted revision of the
Bylaws are being circulated to all Chapter Presidents in advance of
the AGM package. The Board will then prepare the Special Resolu-
tion on Continuance and the required translations for distribution to
all Member Chapters with the AGM 2014 package. The 2014 Con-
ference Coordinator will include an information session to review the
Special Resolution before the vote at the AGM.
Ed Tummers, Bylaws Leader
Joke for Today
An elderly gentleman had serious hearing problems for a number of
years. He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted for
a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%.
The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor
said, “your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you
can hear again.”
The gentleman replied, “oh, I haven’t told my family yet. I just sit around
and listen to the conversations. I’ve changed my will three times!”

LOOK FOR UNSUNG HEROES IN YOUR CHAPTERS. LET'S HONOUR THEM BY TELLING US
WHAT THEY DO.
Surely there have to be men and women in your chapters who are doing all the little things that make the chap-
ter tick. Email Joel Jacobson, UOAConnection editor, through the national office email at
