Faculty of Health Sciences

TheFacultyofHealthScienceshasalongandproudtraditionofexcellenceintheeducationofhealthprofessionals,ofundertakingrelevantresearch,ofcommunityprojectsandofprovidingqualityserviceincommunityclinicsandteachinghospitalsthataffordsspecialisedcarefortheunderprivileged,whileprovidingaclinicalplatformforsupervisedstudentlearning.

TheFacultyishometo5000undergraduateand1500postgraduatestudentsinprogrammesthatincludespecialistmedicalanddentaltrainingandfellowshipsinmorethan40disciplines.Studentsaretrainedby600academicstaffmembersinfourschools,namely,Dentistry,HealthcareSciences,MedicineandHealthSystemsandPublicHealth.

ThehallmarkofresearchintheFacultyofHealthSciencesisitsfocusonthehealthandhealthcarechallengesfacingSouthAfricaandAfrica,withresearchrangingfromlaboratory-based,cutting-edgescience,tofindingsolutionstohealthcareburdens.


Faculty of Humanities

TheFacultyofHumanitiesatUPisoneoftheoldestandmostrespectedhumanitiesfacultiesinSouthAfrica.TheFacultywasestablishedin1919,and2019willseethecelebrationofitscentenary.Ithasalongtraditionof,andextensiveexperienceinprovidingundergraduateandpostgraduateprogrammesinawiderangeofdisciplinesinthelanguages,arts,andthehumanities and social sciences.

Faculty of Law

Seenfromoneperspective,theFacultyofLawconsistsofstaff,studentsandabuilding.However,itismuchmorethanthat:Itrepresentsanidea,namelytheideaofasocietygovernedbytheruleoflawandnotbyindividuals.TheFacultypursuesthisideabyfocussingonthelawandonexcellenceinalldivisionsofjurisprudence.Itisalsopursuedbyfocussingonjuristsandbypreparingourstudentstobecomeleadersoftheircommunitieswheretheycanpromotethelawanditsprincipleseffectively.

TheTimesHigherEducationWorldUniversityRankingsplaceUP’sFacultyofLawatthehighestpositionnotonlyinSouthAfrica,butinAfrica.Furthermore,UPwasranked92ndintheworldforlawaccordingtothelatestTimesHigherEducationLawsubjectranking.Itistheonlylocaluniversityinthetop100.

TheTuksLawteamwonthe58thPhillipCJessupInternationalLawMootCourtCompetition.


Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences

Toalargeextent,thehopesofSouthAfricaandtherestofAfricadependondevelopmentsinscience,engineeringandtechnology.TheFacultyofNaturalandAgriculturalSciencesaimstoprovideleadershipinthefieldsofbasicnaturalsciences,agriculturalsciences,consumerandfoodsciencesandmathematics.Ithasasubstantialrecordofresearchachievements,andsixA-ratedresearchers,namelyProfNigelBennett,ProfDonCowan,ProfPedroCrous,ProfYvesVandePeer,ProfBrendaWingfieldandProfMikeWingfield.Ahighqualityofunder-andpostgraduateeducationisofferedandinvolvementinavarietyofcommunityprojectscontributetotheFaculty’sexcellence.

ResearchersintheFacultywininternationalawards,andsodoourstudents.Ground-breakingresearchisdoneontreehealth,foodsecurity,malariacontrol,endocrinology,geoinformatics,medicinalplants,genetics,andmuchmore.

Faculty of Theology and Religion

ThemissionoftheFacultyofTheologyandReligionistoservedifferentfaithcommunities,aswellasscience,bearinginmindourdevotiontosociety,theAfricancontextandsensitivitytotheconcernsofthedifferenttraditionsoffaith.Weareproudtocountpeoplefromacrosstheworldamongourstudentsandalumni.TheFacultyofTheologyandReligionis:� the largest, oldest and most productive theological faculty in South Africa;� in terms of academic excellence, a world-renowned research Faculty (our students are sought after

Faculty of Veterinary Science

TheFacultyofVeterinaryScienceissituatedontheOnderstepoortCampus,some20kmnorthwestoftheHatfieldCampusandsome15kmduenorthofthecitycentreofPretoria(Tshwane).Itaimstobeaninternationallyaccreditedseatofveterinaryexcellence,andstrivestobegloballycompetitive,regionallypre-eminentandlocallyrelevantwhileprovidinganeffectiveveterinaryinterfacetoAfrica.TheFacultyhasaproudtraditioninveterinaryandpara-veterinaryeducation,researchandservice-renderingwhichdatesbacktotheearly1920s.


The Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS)

The online application procedure is outlined on www.saqa.org.za and includes the following steps:

From1January2019Englishwillbethelanguageofteachingandlearningforallfirst-yearprogrammes.Theonlyexceptionsarewherestudentsarestudyingotherlanguagesorinprogrammeswithprofession-specificlanguageoutcomes,subjecttoapprovalbySenate.Englishwillalsobethelanguageofofficialcommunicationandadministrationonallcampusesandinresidences.Whererequestedandfeasible,administrativeservicesmaybeprovidedinotherSouthAfricanlanguages.

Studentswhoregisteredpriorto2019,includingthosewhoregisteredin2018forthefirsttime,willcontinuetoreceivelectures,tutorials,studyguidesandassessmentmaterial(questionpapers,assignmentsandthelike)inAfrikaansforthoseprogrammeswhichwereofferedinAfrikaansatthetimeofenrolment,providedthattheclasssizeremainspracticallyfeasibleanditisacademicallyjustifiable.

WhereassessmentandquestionpapersaresetinAfrikaans,currentlyenrolledstudentswillalsobeallowedtoanswerinAfrikaans.

6. UP Language policy


TheInternationalCooperationDivision(ICD)isahomefromhomeforallnon-SouthAfricanstudents.Allenquiriesrelatingtoimmigrationandthespecificneedsofaninternationalstudentcanbeaddressedtoisd@up.ac.za.

AllstudentswhoarenotSouthAfricancitizensmustsubmitimmigrationclearancedocumentspriortoregistration.TheUniversitywillbeopenfrom3January2019.

7.2 Temporary residence permits

TheNewImmigrationRegulationsof2014werepublishedinGovernmentGazetteNo37679intermsofsection7oftheImmigrationAct13of2002andcameintoeffecton26May2014.Bothprospectiveandreturningstudentsareadvisedtovisitwww.vfsglobal.com/dha/southafricaforalltherequiredinformation.

AllforeignnationalswishingtoenterSouthAfricawillhavetoadheretotheNewImmigrationRegulations.

TheDepartmentofHomeAffairshasannouncedtheopeningofvisaandpermitfacilitationcentresin11citieslocatedinthenineprovincesofSouthAfrica(VFSGlobal).VisaandpermitapplicationswillbeacceptedatanyofthesecentresandwillbeassessedbytheDepartmentofHomeAffairsinPretoria.Non-SouthAfricanswithlegalresidencypermitscanapplyforvisasorpermits at these centres.

Everynon-SouthAfricancitizenisrequiredtoholdavalidpassportandatemporaryresidencepermit,suchasastudyvisaendorsedforstudyatUP.Non-SouthAfricancitizenswishingtoenterSouthAfricashouldonlyapplyforstudyvisasoncetheyhavereceivedanofficialletterofadmission.

StudyvisasmustbeobtainedbeforetravellingtoSouthAfrica.FirstapplicationsforstudyvisaswillnolongerbeacceptedwithinthebordersofSouthAfrica.

Studentsareallowedtoregisterforonlyonesemester(sixmonths),unlessspecialarrangementshavebeenmadebetweenthehomeandthehostinstitutions.
