[Ed.Note: In last week’s story called “Hoot there it is” the article incorrectly called the home opener a “Bury the Burrow in Red” game, which is reserved for FAU’s annual game with FIU and the celebration “Owl Fingers” was incorrectly titled as “Owl Eyes.” The location of The Burrow is on the west side of campus, behind the Oxley Center. Its student section is on the east side and FAU Stadium is located at the intersection of North University Dr. and FAU Blvd. This was reported incorrectly in the issue and the UP regrets the error.]

Just 12,044 fans showed up to witness the Owls only win of last season, a 38-35 victory over UAB at FAU Football Stadium on November 26. The first home game on Oct. 15 drew 29,103.

fans for the finale, a game Pelini attended, sitting among fans in the stands.
Craig Angelos, Pelini’s boss for less than three months and the one man in charge of hiring Pelini often said last season that as long as 12,000 tickets were sold per game, the athletic department was making enough money to pay off its yearly $2.6 million loan to Regions Bank.
But Chun doesn’t buy into the theory of a week-by-week ticket amount needed. Instead he offers up an analogy about looking at best possible outcomes, not what’s needed to get by.
“I don’t know if you have a car payment or rent payment, but you know what that is. We know the urgency of getting our rent and will do it,” Chun said. “But we’re not looking toward minimums as an organization anymore. We’re looking toward what the maximums are, and that’s what we’re going to strive for.”
As for naming rights to the stadium, Chun thinks there
are already companies out there looking to buy in. According to him, the only way to make it happen is to become extremely visible to potential suitors.
“We’ve just got to get in front of them and find out who they are,” Chun said. “I’m in the process of getting fully immersed into what prospects are out there for that and how we’re going to get that done.”
After last year’s inaugural season, there were many events, such as the Major League Lacrosse All Star Game and the Battle of Florida Football All Star Game in the new stadium. Melissa Dawson says there’s more to come for the fall semester and beyond.
“We’re looking at sporting events. We’re looking at concerts,” Dawson said. “Anybody that’s willing to come reach out and talk to us, we’re open to discuss what kind of event they’d like to have in there.”
No matter how many additional events are held at the stadium, the primary
money maker is FAU football. Chun realizes the importance of a winning program.
“Everybody knows what the goals are. It’s obvious when you’re in sports. We keep score for a reason,” Chun said. “Carl [Pelini] recognizes that. We keep score on a lot of different levels, on the scoreboard, in the classroom, in the community. I know Carl is poised to win on any place we keep score.“
During his interview process, Chun marveled at the positives surrounding FAU, even remarking that President Mary Jane Saunders has “this university on a trajectory that is probably unmatched anywhere in the country.” A stadium with the capacity to expand to 60,000 seats offers a glimpse into the possibility of one day turning the Owls into a national power.
“Everyone talked about the potential for this place,” Chun said. “Our job here is that we’re going to start turning potential into productivity and that’s where we’re focused.”

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Hinds moved to Miami at the age of 2. His father, John, a drag racer and boxer at the time, sent him to Florida to live with his stepmother.
“Just for a better life, for the American Dream,” Hinds explained “I think he just wanted to get me away from the violence out there. It was a tough time. A lot of drugs, all that stuff. Personally, he didn’t tell me why. He just told me he wanted a better life for me. I was young, so I didn’t know what Jamaica had going on.”
His father died in Hinds’ freshman year at FAU, the week after his first start.
“He had liver disease, but it made his system so weak that when he went
back to Jamaica, he ended up getting pneumonia and passing away,” Hinds said.
Shortly before his death, he came to South Florida to stay with Hinds, and the two bonded like never before.
“We got real close over that little bit of time. It was good. It was good for me,” Hinds said. “Kind of helped me grow as a man to take care of my own father for a while.”
Despite losing his father, he did not lose sight of his responsibilities. Hinds’ voice softens as he briefly mentions his biological mother, who he met at 18 and is living in Jamaica.
They still speak occasionally, and he has no resentment toward her.
“I don’t hold no grudges with anybody,” Hinds said. “You’ve got to learn to forgive and forget.”
His smile reappears when he tells me about the woman who raised him since he was 2 years old.
Carlene Gabriel, his step mother, means everything to him. They may not be blood related, but he considers her his mom.
“She’s my backbone,” Hinds said. “My pride, my joy, everything that I do this for. My motivation.”
As a freshman, she even came over to his dorm every weekend from Miramar to clean for him and cook Jamaican food. He explains how she’s a registered nurse but isn’t working right now. Hinds lets out a smile. Nothing would make him happier than to help her retire.
“Right now she’s home. She’s not working right now,” Hinds said. “I plan to keep it like that.”
Seek first the kingdom of heaven and his righteousness and all will be added unto you. — Matthew 6:33.
This is David Hinds’ favorite Bible verse, but he wasn’t always a devout Christian.
Coming out of the mean streets of Miami, the fast life was there to be had. Keith Reaser highlights the dangers of the area he and Hinds were raised in.
“We grew up in Miami so we do stuff a lot different. You’re just exposed to a lot of stuff
that can get you dragged into doing maybe the wrong things,”
Reaser explained. “Thinking about things the wrong way, in regards to women, all that type of stuff.”
Hinds enjoyed the perks of youth like many young football players his age, dabbling in the pleasures of the world.
“Growing up, I was just a troublemaker. I didn’t really focus in school. Tattoos. Girls. I got caught up in a bad relationship,

What are some perks and challenges you face as being the offensive coordinator? You know, camp becomes a grind. You put a lot of hours in, you’re away from your family a lot, but that’s the life you chose as a football coach. That’s one of the tough things about it. The reward is you get to work with the players.
You touched on relationships between you and the players. How important is that in winning and their growth as players on and off the football field? We like to think that in order to win you have to build winners to win. So if we’re developing their character and preparing them to win in life and in the classroom, then the end result would take care of itself on Saturdays.
Running back Damian Fortner’s take on Wright: I love him. I like what he teaches. He teaches the fundamentals. He expects a lot from us, but we expect a ůŽƚĨƌŽŵŽƵƌƐĞůǀĞƐDĞĂŶĚĐŽĂĐŚtƌŝŐŚƚĂƌĞƉƌĞƩLJƟŐŚƚŽĂĐŚtƌŝŐŚƚŝƐƌĞĂůůĂŝĚďĂĐŬďƵƚŚĞĐĂŶŐĞƚĮƌĞĚƵƉ
