INFECTIOUS DISEASES POLICY

At the Executive Meeting on 10 August an InfectiousDiseases Policy for the Association was adopted .

The Association was acutely aware of communityconcern regarding the dangers of transmission ofinfectious diseases, particularly HIV(AIDS) and HepatitisB . The Association accordingly consulted a specialistinfectious diseases physician Dr Peter Stanley who alsohappens to be a former amateur footballer and thushas an understanding of amateur football to developthat is both effective and practical .

The policy adopted is as follows :Introduction :

This policy is to take immediate effect for all gamesadministered by the VAFA .

The policy is based to a significant degree upon theInfectious Diseases Policy published by the AustralianSports Medicine Federation Ltd, 2nd edition, revisedand reprinted August 1991 but adapted specifically tothe perceived needs of amateur football .The Need for a Policy :

A number of blood-borne infectious diseases canbe transmitted during body contact and collision sports .The more serious include HEPATITIS and HIV(AIDS)infections, These diseases may be spread by contactbetween broken skin or mucous membranes, e .g . theeye and the inside of the mouth, and infected blood orsaliva contaminated by blood .

It should be stressed at this point that the risk factorof transmission of such infections is very low but, havingregard to the potential outcomes of such infections, theAssociation believes it must take all reasonable stepsto minimise that risk.

N .B. There is no evidence that sweat/urine, and tearswill transmit Hepatitis B or HIV .Conduct of Matches : A . During the Game :

1 . Biting : (a) Biting of ANY person is prohibited ;(b) Umpires will be directed to report EVERY incidentof biting ; (c) Clubs are directed to report through theInvestigation committee EVERY incident of biting notalreay reported ; (d) Tribunals and Investigation commit-tees will be directed as to the dangers of transmissionof infection by this means in order to take this factor intoconsideration when fixing penalties for biting offences .

2 . Spitting : (a) Spitting at umpires, players, officialsor any person is prohibited; (b) Umpires will be directedto report EVERY incident of spitting ; (c) Clubs aredirected to report through the Investigation committeeEVERY incident of spitting at a person or persons not

already reported ; (d) Tribunals and Investigationcommittees will be directed as to the dangers oftransmission of infection by this means in order to takethis factor into consideration when fixing penalties forspitting offences .3. Cuts and Abrasions : (a) All wounds resulting in bloodloss shall be covered by a clean dressing ; (b) Wherebleeding is continuing and is not controlled by a dressingthe player shall leave the field, voluntarily or by directionof afield umpire, until the bleeding is controlled and thewound properly dressed ; (c) The dressing of woundsmust be clean and not blood-soaked . Where dressingsare blood-soaked the player shall leave the field, voluntarioly or by direction of a field umpire, until thewound is covered by a clean dressing ; (d) Where clothingis contaminated by blood, eg . jumpers or shorts, it mustbe replaced priorto the player being allowed to resumeplay. The player may be directed by a field umpire toleave the field until the clothing is replaced ; (e) If bleedingcannot be controlled and the wound securely covered, the player shall not be permitted to continue in the game .B . TEAM AREAS:

1 . It is the club's responsibility to ensure that thedressing rooms be clean and tidy . Particular attentionshould be paid to hand-basins, toilets and showers .Adequate soap, paper hand-towels, brooms, refuse dis-posal bins and disinfectants must be available at all times .

2 . All clothing, equipment and surfaces contaminatedby blood must be treated as potentially infectious andtreated accordingly.

3. Plastic bags ought to be available to dispose ofpotentially contaminated clothing and dressings .

4. At training sessions all open cuts and wounds mustbe treated immediately and covered with cleandressings .

5. It is preferable that there be no sharing of towels, face washers and drink containers .

6 . There should be no sharing of shaving razors .Players, Umpires and Officials Personal Protection :

1 . It is the responsibility of all players, umpires andofficials to maintain strict personal hygiene as this is thebest method of controlling the spread of infectiousdiseases.

2 . It is strongly recommended that ALL players, umpires and officials be vaccinated against HepatitisB . This involves a series of three injections over a periodof six months .

REVIEWOrmond easily accounted for a lacklustreScotch .Scotch's inability to convert with the aid of the breeze

in the 1st terms cost them any chance in this game .Ormond rover Brett Conneel had a field day

finishing with 5 goals.Unfortunately Ormond's efforts were all in vain as

Haileybu ry defeated St Bernard's to cement theirplace in the four.

Missing finals doesn't go down well at Ormond andmuch off season soul searching and recruiting will takeplace .

Scotch have promised so much but can't quiteproduce the goods when it really counts .

Gavin Eagle has had a great year as have Andrewand Tim Hart and Andrew Smith but they will needto have a greater go if they want to succeed in A-section .

Haileybu ry 's victory over St Bernard's was onewhich showed enormous character.

Holding only an 11 pt 3/4 time lead the Bloods booted4 goals against the wind in the final term to win by 16 pts .

The charge was led by Dave Connell and Glen nBorg as St Bernard's relented under the pressure fromthe Bloods .

The on ball pair of Vin Comito and Luke Gollantkept St Bernard's in the game but inaccurate final termkicking saw them lose any chance of winning the gameand consequently any chance of getting a berth in the2nd semi final .

The two teams meet again today in the first semi finalin what should be a torrid encounter.

Collegians held aspirited De La Salle at bayto runout victors by 4 pts.

The lions looked in control all day but a mid quarterfinal term run on saw the reigning premiers come within4 pts of the current A-section leaders .

Good 4 quarter players were hard to finds as the teambattled for form in the blustery conditions.

Danny Smith was in good touch in his back pocketand at the other end Stuart Hinchen wore Pat Mannix'like a glove'.

There was plenty of spite in this game and we all lookforward to next week's 2nd semi final .

Therry moved off the bottom of the ladder andhanded the wooden spoon to Man;ellin .

Both clubs will be in B-section in '93 . Paul Gilmourset up Therry's victory in a best on ground displaywhich saw him bag 6 goals .

Therry's 10 goal 2nd half saw them the moredetermined unit and if not for injuries they could wellhave stayed in A-section and for that matter so couldhave Marcellin .

Dave Cooper and Matt Amad played well at halfback for the Eagles but once again the lack of effectiveforwards was their downfall .

Old Xavs ensured themselves of avoiding relegation

when they held out a relentless No rth Old Boys .The Xavs looked home at 3/4 time when they held

a 19 pt lead but No rt h booted 6.5 in the final term toputXavs potentially into relegation contention, buttheXaverians stood up to the challenge and won the game.

Dan Richardson and Dave Landrigan weredesperate in defence whilst Luke Boyle (8 goals), SteveBrazil and Tim Jones never gave up for No rt h .

The Old Boys will be disappointed with theirseason and I imagine the Xaverians looking toconsolidate .

1ST SEMI FINAL PREVIE WLuke Gollant hasa surprised me as he surely is the

best spearhead option they have . It wouldn't surpriseme if we see the Gollant brothers holding down thekey forward post today .

At the other end of the ground the Bloods have highmarking Ga ry Phillips astheir main target with SimonMeehan, Wes Byrns, Andrew Walden and Matt DeMattia providing the other options .

Pace seems to be the key to the Haileyburianforward set up but the St Bernard defence is surelynot slow.

Paul and Anthony Capes are the marshalls of theSt Bernard defence along with Frank Dunnell whomay be a bit slow for his opponents today.

Thetenacity and determination of the St Bernard'sdefenders is unquestioned and they have held somevery good sides to ordinary scores this year.

In the midfield Haileybu ry will be missing ChrisMcKenzie who is arguably the best centreman in thecompetition .

His place will be filled by Wayne Phillips whoperformed magnificently in the pivot earlier on in theyear.

On either wing Phillips will have the talented duoof Peter Thiessen and Matt Armstro ng . This pair havebeen consistently damaging this year and their pacecoupled with their stamina can be hard to stop.

Rob Purcell can be a destructive centreman but helacks consistency, mind you Phillips would not wantto give him too much latitude because his pinpointdisposal can create golden opportunities for playersupfieid.

The first semi final clash between St Bernard's andOld Haileyburians should be a beauty.

St Bernard's have defied all the odds to make thefinals in their first season back in the top grade andHaileybu ry have charged home to make the A-sectionfinals for the first time ever .

This match will be atough encounter with both teamsprepared to run straight and hard at the ball . What theymay lack in skill (which is not very much!) is made upfor with desperation and commitment .

We will see two playing coaches in action today -Simon Meehan and Frank Dunell .

Page 5: uPa - Victorian Amateur Football Association · 2015-02-24 · Danny Smith was in good touch in his back pocket and at the other end Stuart Hinchen wore Pat Mannix 'like a glove

Meehan who earlier in the year came out ofretirement to help lift the Bloods from the bottom of theladder is an inspiration on the field and with his paceand skill can tear defences apart .

Dunell simply directs traffic with his exsperience andaccurate disposal .

The defences will have to be on their toes today asboth teams have numerous avenues to goal .

Josh Wayter, Billy Baxter, Dave Connell and Bre ttCa rt y have formed the basis of a fine defence forHaileybu ry and although they may not be the fastestor prettiest in the competition, on recent form they mustrank with the meanest .

The St Bernard's forwards are quick andunpredictable with Greig Wood, Nick Mitchell, GavinKeane all capable of kicking goals .

Simon Walsh is a nippy winger that is likely to pickup Armstrong - this will be a quick battle and the duelcould go either way.

On the ball we see Wayne Carey tackle the duo ofMark O rten and tan Kidgell . Kidgell's form this yearhas been surprisingly ordinary - we all know what heis capable of . O rten has been in good touch and boththe Haileyburians will have to be on their game to shutCarey out .

Luke Gollant and Jack Overman will share the ruckroving duties - they are persistent and skillful .

The Bloods ruck rovers of Matt De Mattia and GlenTanner are vigorous and skilled and the ruck rovingbattle should be a highlight .

Roving we see Vin Comito and Matt Mulkearnstake on Chris Kraus and Simon Meehan .

Basically all these players are in form and run all day.The Haileyburian duo may be a bit quicker but the classof the St Bernard pair is undoubted .

The weather may play a major role in today's result .St Bernard's handle the heavy or windy conditions

far better than the Bloods yet dry, still conditions willsee Haileybu ry hold the advantage.

On paper there is nothing separating these twoteams.

St Bernard's have had the advantage of their homeground to reach this year's finals and in recent weekshave not been playing well .

Haileybu ry are on a roll, know how to run atElsternwick Park and are supremely confident .

The confidence is the element that should see th eBloods infrontatthe bell in whatwill be adour physicalstruggle.

Are Haileybu ry the sleeping giants? Haileybu ry by12 points .

]LETTER

PHIL'S LETTER OF THE WEEK

Dear John ,I read with considerable interest your letter which was

published in last week's Amateur Footballer .I am appreciative of your congratulations of all club

umpires as clearly you, like myself, appreciate the rolethey play to ensure that reserve football continues .

I have noted your comments regarding "Area-ZoneTraining Groups" and it is really in relation to that aspectof your letter that I wish to write to you .

I am acutely aware that Elsternwick Park is a difficultvenue for umpires from the northern suburbs to get tofor training .

I am aware and have experienced at first hand theconcept of two training venues, one north of the city, for umpires . I regret to say that on the occasion it wastried it did not work basically because it involvedduplication of coaching resources and, moreimportantly, it split the umpires into two groups whichcertainly affected the spirit amongstthe umpires as anassociation .

► EDI tORIAL contrnued from page 7

3 . All players, umpires or officials with prior evidenceof these diseases are strongly advised to obtainconfidential advice and clearance from a doctor priorto participation or involvement.

4. Clubs should supply disposable gloves for use bytheir training staff on match days and at trainingsessions.

5. In the event that medication is administered toplayers by injection there must be no sharing of needles .

Umpires have been directed to enforce the polic ywith common sense. Clubs ought ensure that on matchdays there is an ample supply of clean dressings forwounds as well as a supply of spare jumpers and shorts .Failure to ensure adequate supplies may result in aplayer not being permitted to take any further part in amatch .

Any queries regarding the policy or its applicationought be directed in writing to the General Manager.

~ r,, --',, ~ ~ii~

As you will appreciate, we have been succeeding overthe past couple of years in not only increasing ournumber of umpires, but also the quality generallythroughout all grades . One of the major factorsinfluencing this success has been the strength of ourumpires' association through the spirit it hasengendered . One of the major reasons for this strengthis the fact that all umpires train together as a group atElsternwick Park .

I therefore cannot see the Umpire Committeereverting to another training venue in the foreseeablefuture.

We do however cater for umpires with experience whoare unable to train with us. They form the "supple-mentary list" and umpire in the junior sections with ayoung umpire.

I would be happy to discuss reserve umpiring withyou and thank you for the interest you have shown .

Yours faithfully

Philip Rowel lUmpire Committee Chairman

( Y=~~ r~ Fj,j~'7 ~~~E~ r~ Q~.Finals commence at Elsternwick Park this weeken d

and patrons are once again reminded that ElsternwickPark is to be'The Park Without Bark' meaning that dogsare not allowed to be taken into Elsternwick Park duringmatches .

Although dogs may well beafamily pet, VAFA FamilyFootball means being ableto watch football withouttheinterruption and dangers of dogs.

Whist on reminders!!! Clubs participating in finals areresponsible for cleaning dressing rooms after use .Already two clubs from whom we borrow grounds havecomplained bitterly about the state rooms have beenleft in .

In cases like this we ask clubs to organise for roomsto be cleaned and clubs are invoiced accordingly .

Please remember that we only have access to thesegrounds in the future if we treat them with respect .

~t~**Interesting article sent down by ex-VAFA Umpire

Advisor David Levens . Sharon, as mentioned is an ex-VAFA umpire, whilst Tracey Greene is the wife of BrettGreene who was an A-section umpire with us in 1990 .

WOMEN IN WHITEWOMEN will make up the entire umpiring team

controlling a senior match for the first time in AustralianRules history in NSW tomorrow.

The female umpires will be in charge of the SydneyFootball League reserves match between East Sydneyand Western Suburbs.

Both field umpires have officiated in other states .

Sharon Alger was a member of the AFL UmpiringDevelopment Squad, and umpired seniorfootball in theVictorian Amateurs before her transfer to Sydney.

Amanda Norris has umpired senior football inTasmania and the NT.

Boundary umpires Franca Shewell and TraceyGreene are married to field umpires in Sydney whilethe goal umpires are linked with the AFL .

Kirsten Tona is the sister of North Melbourne's BenBuckley and Georgia Morey works in reception with theSydney Swans .

Gate attendants are reporting quite frequentinstances of club supporters and even playersbelonging to certain clubs refusing to pay at gates orsimply climbing fences into games .

Clubs are warned against these practices and areadvised that if individuals are identified, clubs will beinvoiced accordingly. This will even extend to playerswho have given away their entry ticket .

VOTE COUNT . . . . . . . . . MONDAY SEPTEMBER 7Demand is high for extra tickets for this night so

clubs who have not replied with the names of the 2people who will be attending need to do so immediately.

Pre-counting of votes will be done for A to F sectionsfor all but the last 5-best on ground votes which willbe called on the night .

As well as presentations to A to F best and fairestwinners presentations will be made to G and Under 19best and fairest winners and leading goalkickers .

B SECTIONby Tom Johnston

REVIEW ROUND 1 8With 2nd spot at stake you would expect a fairly good

contest and that's exactly what we got when OldMelburnians clinched 2nd spot with a gutsy, hardfought victory by 15 pts over Old Trinity . OldMelburnians must be a fairly happy lot with theirpresent form, winning 8 on the trot, and winning keygames without the injured Cordner. 27 scoring shotsapiece shows you what a tight struggle the game wasplayed at - the game was in doubt all day when at 3/4time Trinity led by 8 pts but could not hold OldMelburnians in the last quarter where Teal kicked 3goals to finish full of running and run out victors by 15pts in a very good game.

Monash Blues ripped apart a pathetic UniversityBlues by 66 pts in a very one sided game . Monashwere going to win this game right from the 1st quarter- the Monash boys looked the goods whilst Blues werepraying forthe end of the season . What about the greatone handed mark from the Monash strongmanJonathan Koop - equally impressive were the'smother' Quinn brothers who were in everything aswas the favourite for Monash's B&F lan'Baker Finch'Kohler. University Blues need to have a real look atthemselves unless a major overhaul takes place I wouldhave not doubt the Blues will be relegated in 1993 !

Old Mentonians really had to work hard for 3 quar-ters before running away with a 9 goal last quarter overParkside who never stopped giving their best all day.Mentone had afew personal achievements on the day- coach Bert Calvert 's last game, Adam Acremankicked 10 goals and winning the goalkicking in B Gradewith 73 for the season and Gary `Finally' Norton retiredafter a wonderful 377 game career and fittingly kickingthe last goal of the match to finish a wonderful career.Parkside without a win for the season gave their bestbut it wasn't good enough . Once again Parkside'ssuper rover Leo Panjari had another great match . OldMentonians 79 pt victory will hold them in good steadfor next season, in fact if Old Mentonians had notstarted so poorly losing the first 4 matches, they couldeasily have made the 4.

The fight for 4th spot between Old Paradians andWhitefriars was always going to be a tough physicalaffair and that's what we got. I watched this great contestand was equally impressed by the endeavours of bothsides. Whitefriars stuck to theirtask and with strike atC. H . B ., the Friars ran the ball well and with the speedyCarbone and Reidy, the 1/2 time lead of 18 pts lookedsufficient . The 3rd quarter was tough, Lane at fullforward was proving a nightmare to Parade and withCrowe very lively, Parade were playing catch upfootball . The veterans Brabender (who was magnificentin many positions) and Gleeson got Parade slowly backinto the game buttrailed by29 pts at 3/4 time. Whitefriarskicked the 1st two goals of the last quarter throughCarbone and Lane and put the chance of victory further

out of Parade's reach . However, to Parade's credit theyknuckled down and fought back courageously andmanaged to kick 6.1 but it was not enough . Whitefriarswon by 17 pts and full forward Peter Lane equalled theFriars club record of 10 goals in a game .

How do you tip for or against Banyule? Talk aboutform reversals, the Bears have been this tipster's worstnightmare when they beat competition leaders OldBrighton by 20 pts in Simmo's farewell game for theBears . The 1st half was fantastic football, 1 pt differenceat 1/4 time and 1/2 time, what a match! Simmo gave theBears one of his famous speeches at 1/2 time (Simmois a great speaker) and the Bears lifted - 7 goals in the3rd quarter was the result of good football . What aboutthe old man, Martin Legge at 37 years had Nick Perry17 years his junior shifted - Simmo's boys weredetermined to win the match for their coach and greatfriend . Brighton trailing by 33 pts at 3/4 time didn't domuch in the last quarter for coach Mark Parker, in factBrighton looked ordinary for a top side even thoughmissing 7 players . Brighton will have to improve theirattitude to have a big part in the finals . (Great way toend your time at Banyule Simmo - well done mate) .

PREVIEW 1ST SEMI- OLD TRINITY vs WHITEFRIAR S

Now we are down to the business end of the seasonand what a contest we should have at Elsternwick Parkbetween two very good B Grade sides . Whitefriars hadan easy 55 pt win over Trinity in Rnd 8 and then Trinityreversed that result with a whopping 127 pt victory inRnd 16, so who will start favourites? I watched theWhitefriars vs Parade match last Saturday and cameaway with a healthy respect for the Friars. Geoff Reillycertainly had his boys su per fit very quick and very, verycommitted . Parade were very physical but the Friarsanswered every challenge put to them and passed withflying colours. What does happen to Trinity at finalstime? They have lost 3 out of the last 4 games and blew2nd spot with their 15 pt loss to Old Melburnians.Trinity have the height, very good team skills, a greatforward line and not a bad defence, so where are theygoing 'wrong'.

Finals footy is a totally different matter and I am sureit will bring out the best in playersfrom both teams . Thepersonal match ups will decide the outcome of thegame - Whitefriars captain Spears on Phillips willbe crucial, Reidy vs Allibon will be sensational, centreman Phillips vs Hedley, Strike on Hadfield,Danny Crowe on Heath, Bonnyman vs R . Beardsleyin the ruck, rovers Mark Bateman vs Ivorman, fullforward Peter Lane vs N . Bearsley - the list of classplayers on both sides are a credit to the respectivecoaches Geoff Reiley and Alan Johnson . Whitefriarshave a running game that suits Elsternwick Park butearlier in the season suffered a 54 pt loss to OldBrighton at the Park . Trinity are a good side but do

Page 9: uPa - Victorian Amateur Football Association · 2015-02-24 · Danny Smith was in good touch in his back pocket and at the other end Stuart Hinchen wore Pat Mannix 'like a glove

they suffer from the dreaded wobbles at final time? Ithink the experience and all round class of Trinity willprevail over the enthusiasm and potential thatWhitefriars have but boy oh boy this will be a greatgame. Old Trinity by 5 pts.Reserves : Old Paradians vs Whitefriars - OldParadians to have too much experience - OldParadians by 11 pts. This Week's Black List - Parade and the ve ryconsistent University Blues!

Schweppes . C SECTIONby "The Squirrel"

What a sensational start we had to our'92 finals seriesdown Parkdale way last Saturday. The ground was firmand fast for footy but subject to a very blustery windwhich was to make for an enthralling day's football .

In the curtain raiser, MHSOB held a handy lead atthe long interval then played a great stanza into the windto all but seal the fate of the game by 3/4 time . No onebothered to tell the Bulleen/Temp. boys of the plot andout they came against all odds to hit the lead late in thefinal spell just to see the `Schoolers' steady, hit the lead(again) and hold on in a real thriller to get the spoils by4 pts, 11 .7.73 to 8 .16.60 and thus advance to thepreliminary final against the loser of the Fawkner vsUni-Blacks game.REVIEW - 1st SEMI FINAL - KEW vs COMMBANK

Bank, 3 players short of top strength won the tossand kicked to the Southern end aided by a strong 6 +goal wind . Their opponents, Kew, were forced to leavethe injured Peric out of their side.

It took until the 9 minute mark of the 1st qtr for theBankers to register their first major through Beare aftera scrambly piece of play by the Kew defence. Againa lull in proceedings until the 15 minute mark whenBunnett of Commbank kicked the first of his 3 for theqtr. In the ensuing 14 minutes Commbank nailed 6goals to Kews solitary 1 for the qtr. Mind you, that 1 goalwas worth several with the wind .

1/4 Time scoreline - Commbank 8.9 .57, Kew 1 .0.6 .Within 30 secs of the commencement, Suiling of

Kew posted a major The Ks waited afurther 8 minutestill their 2nd came along courtesy of Clayton who justhappened to nail their next at the 12 minute mark .Sandwiched in between these was a great solo effortgoal by `Bubby' Jackson of Commbank. Defencesof both sides were sorely tested for the next 8 minutestill Jackson repeated his effort after a great passageof play through Keighran, Melican and Rolls.Whammy, from this point in time Kew opened up alandslide with 4 'twins' in 10 minutes along with anunbelievable run of minor scores .

1/2 Time scoreline - Commbank 10.9.69, Kew 8.14.62 .The 3rd qtr belonged to the Kew Football Club in

as much that their players to a man threw their heartand souls into negating the Banks use of the 'gale'. Toconcede only 3 goals for the qtr, the last of them at the11 minute mark was testiment to the effort the Kewdefenders put in for the session . To also kick one goalinto it was a gem in the overall picture . The Bankersnever once tossed in the towel but against such acommitted defence just couldn't ram home theascendency. As teams huddled for 1/4 time, Kew legend'Slav' Peric let the Bankers know well and truly howhe thoughtthey (Bank) were going and whatthe resultwould be.

3/4 Time scoreline - Commbank 13.13 .91, Kew9.17.71 .

4th and final stanza was to turn out to be an absoluteripper with every element of our great game on display. The Bankers had to emulate Kew'sdeeds and defendgrimly and try to score into the howling wind . 6 minutes

of gritty play before Kew slotted one home via Suilingand a further 6 minutes for the Bank through Rolfs toanswer. Bang, bang, 1 more to each and 15 minutesin, Kew still 19 pts in arrears . 3 goals on the trot to theKs at the 17, 18 and 19 minute marks per Porte, Kingand Barnes and only 1 pt separated the teams. Whateventuated for the next 11 minutes just had to bewitnessed to be believed . Play travelled from half backto half back with 36 players prepared to put their bodiesfairly and squarely on the line. 30 minute mark an erranthandball from a Commbank player deep in defenceresulted in a minor score to level things up. From theresultant kick-out, a knock on to Gilliam (Commbank)who ran the ball out of defence some 40 metres beforelaunching into a huge kick to Bunnett ( Commbank)outnumbered2tol but somehow managing to get ballto boot for a scrambled pt . Kick-in by Kew, siren goes,Commbank win by 1 solitary pt in a game which didn'tdeserve a loser. Football in general and morespecifically the VAFA being the biggest of winners.

Final scoreline - Commbank 15 .16 .106, Kew14.21 .105.

PREVIEW - 2ND SEMI FINA L- FAWKNER vs BULLEENITEM P

If this game delivers the same 'goodies'that the 1stSemi did then all footy supporters are in for a beauty .The ingredients are certainly there for a repeat doseand the spoils for the winner (promotion) are certainlya big carrot to dangle in front of the respective teams .Both Fawkner and Bulleen/Temp. have had terrificsuccess over the latter part of the season and deservetheir top billing . Fawkner boast some real stars, a la,Young, Lawson, Majerczak etc. whilst Bulleen/Temp .have what I consider ateam of real goers with no stand-outs . I can see Fawkner hold sway in the 'class' areawith the Bullants being strong in the'clinches'. Giventhat the conditions are conducive to good football I'mtipping the boys from out North way to get home in atoughy by 29 pts, however, if the track has a bit of 'give'in it and the game is played at ground level then theBullants will be in it up to their necks. Fawkner to gothrough to the G .F. and win direct promotion to 'B'Grade and the Bullants to meet Commbank in thePreliminary Final to decide the other promotee .

RESERVES - 2ND SEMI FINAL- FAWKNER vs UNI-BLACK S

The 2 best credentialled sides all year meet in whaton paper at least seems to be an even match-up, thatis, if you can excuse the hiccup of a few weeks ago whenthe Fawks slaughtered the Blacks . Not only can thislittle 'Squirrel' forgive, he can also go over the'top' andtip a 20 goal turn around and jump onboard the'Student's' ship to suggest they'll salute by about 3twin calicos. With possibly more ones playersto selectfrom, the Blacks will more than likely be in a machstronger position now to confront Fawkner than a few

Page 11: uPa - Victorian Amateur Football Association · 2015-02-24 · Danny Smith was in good touch in his back pocket and at the other end Stuart Hinchen wore Pat Mannix 'like a glove

weeks back in and around semester break period . That'wily' doyen of rezzies coaches, yes the amazing Jack(NOJ) Keenan will no doubt plot the Blacks' downfallbut will he have the armoury to do so? Question will beanswered at or about 1,45pm . Warning to the Blacks

. if you don't win today then pack up your troublesin your old kit bag and take a walk as the `Schoolers'are back in town and on the prowl . Fawkner might beat'em but I doubt you can !

D SECTIONby Peter Lemon

Big winning margins were the feature of all fourgames last week . Caulfield Grammarians stormedback into C Section and looked good all day againstSt Bedes, whilst Mazenod took until the second halfto get into top gear against Preston . Caulfield'steamwork, tackling and consistency all round theground were telling factors, whilst a 10 goal 3rd termput the Noddies on track for today's Prelim . final .

2ND SEMI - CAULFIELD GRAMM . d ST BEDESA good first 15 mintues against a strong wind put

the writing on the wall (even if the U19'sTipstercouldn'tsee it) and set up the win for OId Caulfield . St Bedesseemed to lack cohesion on the forward line (thoughMcGeorge put in a great single-handed effort) whilstCaulfield - led by Grant Williams in the back pocket- moved the ball out of defence time and time againwith slick handball and great kicking to position . TheBedas' lead of 2 goals (after kicking with a5 goal wind)was not enough at the 1st break, and the Fields thenproceeded to pile on 7 goalsto 1 in the next term . Theyhad many good players, with Ray Berzins dominantin the ruck roving department and on-ball playersDarren Lowe, Nigel Brohier and Royals performingwell . Tim Beasley was battling hard in the ruck, buthis efforts were largely nullified when the ball came toground .

The 3rd term saw the Bedas fight back to an 8 ptdeficit at the last change, but it was unlikely to beanywhere near enough against the mini-gale. An earlygoal to the Fields had them right on track for a goodlast term, and promotion to C Section . Bedasalso hadgood players in theform of And rew Boag, Jason Selbyand Hutchison, but will definitely be hoping that otherscan get the game today.

FIRST SEM IThe Noddies looked to be in trouble after kicking

a nervous3 .8 inthe 1stterm, whilst Preston managed3 majors into the wind . The Tonners then moved to afair lead in the 2nd with straighter kicking and werelooking good - before they managed to get not onebut two players sent off! Peter from Peterboroughmight have been fuming, but I can't comment becauseI wasn't there. The result (or would it have happenedanyway?) was a dominant 3rd term by the Noddies asthey piled on 10 .5 to 1 goal, leaving a certain GoaldUmpire covering more territory than he ever did whenout in the middle! (But what style!) Forward Peter G re enwas a focal point forthe victors, and 3 goals and a goodround-the-ground effort from the other G re en (Pat) alsohelped . Conroy picked up plenty of possessions afterI arrived, and O'Hara was named as their best . ForPreston, Jason McGraw gained many kicks, andRonny Herbe rt performed well .

I n the Reserves 1st semi, St Bedes kicked off a badday for Preston with a comfortable victory : superior

fitness and greater cohesion were major factors, andthe Tonners' Reserves captain/coach G. Sebu hadapparently been called to greater things (lining up forthe Ones) . For the Bedas, Tim Peck and Simon Zahra(back after injury) were great ball-getters, and MarkBeasley was unstoppable.

In the 2nd semi, the Old Ivanhoe machine blew up,broke down and came down to earth with a thud, asthe accurate Noddies breezed into their 3rd grand finalin 4 years . They looked to have the upper hand all overthe ground, whilst for the Hoes, Dar re n 'Pumper'Elwood, David Vam (?) and Tim Ryan were the onlyones to get into the game.

THIS WEE KSeniors. Mental attitude today will play a vital part

in this game ; St Bedes will perhaps be struggling toregroup after last Saturday's thumping, yet will find thebigger ground moreto their liking . Mazenod will be ona high after last week's top performance . To win, StBedes will have to curb Green - in Fitzgibbon theyhave a class backman - and nullify the Noddies'runners . They could do it, but on the balance I expectMazenod to take a close, hard fought game .

Reserves. I've been asked by coach Stephen Kingnot to select Old Ivanhoe, and can only acede to thatrequest, having seen a lacklustre 2nd half effort fromthem last week . St Bedes scored comfortably overPreston and are a cohesive unit . Doubtless OldIvanhoe will come out a lot more determined today (allcylinders, they reckon), but I doubt it will be enoughto take the points .

Congratulations to all associated with the BrunswickAmateur Football Club on their great win on Saturdayand subsequent promotion to D-Grade. They haveworked hard in the last 2 years as aclub and thoroughlydeserve their elevation . To Peter Melton, Rod Watkins, the committee and all the players very well done butremember the job is yet to be completed . You must nowwait a week as Doveton and the rejuvenated NorthBrunswick battle out a tough Prelim . Final . Farewelland commisserations to Glenhuntly whose seasonended on Saturday, but congratulations to them on theirseason they have regrouped very well after beingrelegated in 1991 .

REVIEWFIRST SEMI-FINA L

The conditions at the Brunswick Oval were verywindy and this made it difficult for both sides to playreally good football, and this shows in the lowness inthe scoring . The Hunters made better use of theconditions and really blitzed in the 1st qtr and a halfsetting up a handy lead . No rt h kept plugging away, started to man up and by 1/2 time were back in the game .This seemed to sap the confidence of the Glenhuntlyplayers who had given up their best but could not getaway from their determined opponents . North had nowadapted to the conditions, they were playing thepossession game to perfection as they moved the ballaround with slick handball and short passes, with theirsmall nuggety players at the fall of every pack . Whenthe Hunters did gain possession they were haphazardand could only bomb the ball into attack making it easyfor the Northies defenders who by now had mannedup and were very disciplined, their punching andtackling creating a lot of forward thrusts, causing theiropponents to panic and miss a couple of easy shots, and thus they would not bridge the gap on NorthBrunswick who after sneaking in were very happy toadvance to the Preliminary Final, while for Glenhuntlyit was a disappointing end to a pretty good season .Dean DeMo rton was well held by Paul Breslin but stillmanaged 3 goals to bring up histon, a first for him andthe club, a top effort considering he missed a coupleof games. Barry Thorpe was great across half back,Jason Tirchett and Mark DeMo rt on were a fineruck/ruck-roving combination, Ady Tirchett took sometelling marks when it counted and Keith Hehir andVinny Grimaldi also played well . For Glenhuntly no-one was better than veteran David Gregory in his finalgame, Timmy Hill has been consistent all year,McGrath, Sist and Crook all tried hard .

SECOND SEMI FINA LAnother tough hard fought game troubled by windy

conditions saw Brunswickemerge with a hard foughtvictory over Doveton who unfortunately lost their firstgame since Find 2 in the one that counted - doesn't

it always work out this way in Amateur Football .Brunswick did their homework very well with Wattoshutting out Ladgroge, Blackie keeping Burgo quietand Lars Cordes doing a fine job on Dyke. Dovetonstarted well and held control early. The Wicks keptplugging away and one felt that the turning point in thegame came just before 1/2 time when Brunswick kicked2 vital goals against the wind to trail by only 1 pt at 1/2time. The Brunswick machine then, with everyonecontributing, played some great football in the 2nd halfto outscore Doveton in both qtrs and to advance to awell earned Grand Final spot. For Brunswick in whatreally was a great team effort, Blackie at CH B, DannyHall again in the ruck, Dasha Stevens as usual roving,Lars and Watto and the Snake all were very impressiveand helped their side to its well earned promotion . Forthe Doves who have a little bit of thinking to dothis week,Eyre played an excellent game, the Reiger Bros werein their usual good form, Johnston maintained hisconsistency in a fine defenders game, and Big T hada great battle with Danny Hall .

RESSIESFIRST SEM I

In a typical finals match it was good tough footballwith both sides giving of their all, excellent pressure wasapplied by both sides, the game was in the balance untilthe last 5 minutes with the Doves just a bit steadier inthe crisis. Woof Woof roving and half backs Hacks andShoz played well and Haydn Hewitt played his 100thgame . For Doveton, Nigger Wilson was brilliant, ablybacked up by Spreckley, Muirhead, Worms and theBugger.

SECOND SEM IThis game was virtually over in the 1st 10 minutes

when Glenhuntly kicked 4 goals . From then on it wasgoal for goal with the House gaining a little ground inatough physical pressure like finals game. Stu Withersand Justin Brown were top Huntsmen and Steve Hillplayed very well until injured . For Powerhouse Rob`Boofa' Williams tried hard all day, Crossy startedslowly but blitzed in the middle and Dave Phelan heldthe backline together taking many strong marks.

PREVIEWDoveton - who this week must have a rethink and

re-adapt their game, they must now realise their gunswill be tagged - tackle a No rt h Brunswick side whowill be buoyed in confidence by last week'sperformance . I believe the loss will stir the Doves upand they can play better and to win they must . Theywere close to full strength last week and will show faithin their players this week . No rt h will make a game ofit Ady Tirchett is playing well now and Vinnie Grimaldiis back in town so they will make a game of it but in theend I feel the Doves will just get home and rightfullyadvance to D-Grade.

Page 15: uPa - Victorian Amateur Football Association · 2015-02-24 · Danny Smith was in good touch in his back pocket and at the other end Stuart Hinchen wore Pat Mannix 'like a glove

RESSIESThis will also be a very close game. 1 win each durin g

the season . I believe I'll go for the jugular here and tipAquinas to cause an upset and advance to anotherGrand Final .

GLENHUNTLY MILESTONESTwo proud milestones were struck for North

Brunswick against Glenhuntly 22 .8 .92, when Peter(Midge) DiMarco played his 200th game for the clubwhilst Keith (Hai ry) Hehir played his 150th . Both havehad long, distinguished careers with North and theirservices have been invaluable both in their on-fieldconduct and off-field behaviour. While the fearlessnessboth players have in attacking the ball has been knownto take away the breath of spectators, the two are quitedistinct in their type of play. Midge is a fleet-footed, goodreader of the ball who picks up and delivers beautifullyby hand and foot on both sides of his body. He makesthe great skills this game is proud of look as effortlessas a Kieren Perkins gold medal . The courage shownin his ability to bounce back from the odd debilitatinginjury has to be seen to be believed - Lazarus eat yourheart out! Hairy, while not so fleet-footed, uses his goodfootball brain to get to where the ball is and give hisside the first use . His determination in consistentlygetting the ball from the bottom of packs is legendaryat the Club while his drive out of the pivotal positionhas set up a myriad of North attacks . If the lad couldkick straight when aiming at goal the spectators whouldnot be so grey HAIRed . Both players have been overthe years, and indeed still are, asourceof vital strengtharoundtheClub . Their contribution in maintaining thecompetitiveness and companionship shown by theplayers is something all at North Brunswick are proudof, both having won club best & fairest awards .Congrats Peter and Keith from all at North Brunswick .

SILVA JUBILEEMick Silva plays his 50th game for Powerhouse

this week in the Preliminary final for the reserves. Thisis Mick's 3rd season and this year he has become animportant player in the reserves. His running up & downthe wing & drifting down into the forward line to kicka number of goals has at times been inspirational . Allat Powerhouse congratulate Mick on his 50th gameand hope his form can continue today .

F -TROOPby "Stand-In"

Hello FTroopers! With only 4 sides remaining the nextfew weeks look very exciting . I looked in my crystal balland saw St Leo's winning the flag and Old Essendonbeing runners up. If anyone disagrees, 'bad luck' . Inthe grand final issue I will be doing the .Grade Superstarside with arguably the best 20 players in F.Grade for1992 . Don't forget the Grand Final Gala breakfast onSunday 20th at 8am . Compere is Ian Cover and thecomedian is John Ga rf ield winner of AustralianComedian of the year a few years back . He is greatvalue, so don't let the side down, F.Troopers, be there.Fortickets ring John Grace on 606 7023 B, 578 9952P, Bar ry O'Connor 603 5900 or David Dressing802 4396 B or P.

REVIEWIn the Qualifying Final St Mary 's were no match fo r

St Leo's who ran out convincing winners by 32 pts .The First Elimination turned out to be a fizzer with

Old Essendon trouncing Salesian by 53 pts. The onlyblack spot for Old Es was the reporting of star fullforward Joe Sumundza for tripping . I also congratulatethe lad on kicking 100 goals for the season .

In the last Elimination Old Carey with accuratekicking were too good for Peninsula to win by 28 pts.

RESERVESIn the Qualifying Final Old Essendon were no match

for St Leo's and went down by 48 pts.Peninsula who scraped in to the finals in the last

round proved too good for West Brunswick to win by33 pts .

In the last Elimination St Pat's'Golden Oldies' weretoo talented for an inaccurate Old Carey to win by 27 pts.

PREVIE WSENIORS2ND SEMI - St Leo's vs Old Essendon at Box Hill

In the 2nd semi-final St Leo's should have too manyguns for Old Essendon and put themselves into theGrand Final . St Leo's with a forward line consisting ofCalorie and Shacklock and with Miller pumping theball up to these two the Old E's backmen will have tobe at their best to stop these players . Old E's also haveSumundza who is capable of kicking a bag but I feelSt Leo's playing close to their home ground will havea lot of support on the day and will win by 6 goals .1ST SEMI - Old Ca rey vs St Ma ry 's at Mordiallo c

This should be a very close game with the winnerhaving another chance and the loser saying bye byefor the year. Against Peninsula it was the mid fielderswho had a field day for Old Ca re y and I feel that thisis where this game will be won .

Eskene and Daniels are two experienced footballersand with Hickey who was kept quiet last week against

the Sailors will have too many guns for St Mary 's andshould win by 2 goals .

RESERVES2ND SEMI - St Leo's vs St Pat' s

St Leo's after disposing of Old Essendon will betoo talented for St Pat's'Golden Oldies' and like theirsenior side will proceed to the grand final . St Leo's by8 goals .1ST SEMI - Old Essendon vs Peninsul a

In this game I feel Peninsula will keep going andearn themselves a preliminary final berth by beatingOld Essendon by 5 goals. The reason for this is thatOld Es depth is being tested with the injuries they havehad and with Peninsula seniors losing last week theyshould have 1 or 2 seniorf players to choose from .

REVIEW OF LAST WEEK'S GAMESDIVISION 1

De La finished the home and away series with a bitof a goalkicking spree against Collegians with PeterSatchell getting 9 from the pocket and Jim Darcygetting 6 from his wing . Clancy, Lester and Dobbswere just 3 of many good players for Ds. Scot tycouldn'tget his Eagles to respond to the slab challenge andthey went down to OMs BY 8 goals. OM best wereTelford, Egleton and Kogler while Theodore booted5 majors . Bernies finished on a winning note and witha compliment to the fine performance by umpy MarcEnglish . Adam Farmer did well on the ball andconsistent performers Marcus Daffey and BrettHemley again did well . Xavs made it 17 on end withan awesome 11 goal margin over the then 2nd placedNodders . Tucker got another 7 and Xavs other goodefforts came from Black, Egan and Fitzsimon .DIVISION 2 CENTRA L

Hagar in his 30th year of VAFA involvement said'Rambo' was OT's best in their win over the Bullantsa view shared by OT's. Michael Sutherland kicked .half a dozen and John Shein and Murray Pitman alsoput in for OT's. Hagar said Glen McLaren wasBullants' best. Blues warmed up for the finals with acomfortable 11 goal margin over the Friars. Owen,Cullen and Moo re were Blues best while Knox kicked4 during the half that he played . Camberwell had agood win over Hoes who hung on to 4th spot with anarrow percentage break over the inaccurage Parade.Terry Walker kicked 4 for Wells who were best servedby David Walker, Ben Taylor and Donal `U-etc .'Therry once again romped in this time at Black'sexpense. John Woodgate was their main scorer withMark Finnigan and Lee Hollow doing well and'Chappy' finishing his playing year on a good note.DIVISION 2 SOUT H

Brighton's effort in kicking 4 into the breeze in the3rd quarter was a match winner but unfortunately forthem Bedas rolled High to keep them out of the finals .Jackers praised the efforts of Tonners best - JohnFarrer, And rew McLean and And rew Skelton - whilstalso acknowledging good efforts from their ownAndrew Braun and Danny Rajch . Bedas won the 1stsemi preview against Melb. High thanks to a greatgame after a 6 week absence from Simon Flanne ryas well as good games from Mick Wells and GerardO'Brien who kicked 4 majors .

PREVIEW OF TODAY'S GAMESDIVISION 1

Nodders will be pleased to know that I won't bewatching them today because they've lost each timeI've seen them this year. They have been a little moreconsistentthan OMs throughout the year but probably

lack a little of the polish that OMs often show in theirdisposal skills. During the year I have tended to overratethe OMs (just ask 'Mrs Coach') and underrate theNodders and I think there will be little between themtoday but with the return of a couple from their 'Ones'I think OMs will advance to the Prelim . Final in a fortnight.DIVISION 2 CENTRAL1ST SEMI FINA L

Uni Blues meet Ivanhoe at Parkside where thesurface has been excellent all year . Blues should beat full strength except for Dodd who is nursing hispersistent groin injury and his height will be sorelymissed up forward . At the other end, Hoes have thecompetition's leading goalkicker Raywood(congratulations John!) who will keep Steve's backmenconcentrating all day. Both teams play a veryentertaining style of game and I expect the spectatorswill see a super game today with the Blues luckyenough to emerge the victors.2ND SEMI FINAL

Old Camberwell have thoroughly deserved top spotwith only 2 stumbles during the year. They have hadsome very consistent performers through the year -Cocks, Horskin, Donal 'U', McKenzie etc - and theywill all make it hard for Therry. However, the Roys have5 returning from last week's winning A Grade team -Gilmour, `Gipsy', Court, 'Big Bakes' (all have Big Vexperience as well) and 'Little Bakes'. These guys willgive the Roys a tremendous boost as will their Friday'Pasta Night'. The biggest hurdle for Therry is their lackof a hard match for a long time but I think they canovercome that to just sneak home . (Hagar also pickedTherry and Blues) .DIVISION 2 SOUTH1ST SEMI FINA L

Bedas and High have a replay of last week's gameat Bangholme. This week they appear on the - literally- much more even playing ground of Monash's mainoval . Beda's won't be at top strength as the loss by theirseniors last week will keep a couple of boys up theethatJohn would have like to have today. Also, the resultof the tribunal will have a bearing on their best lineup .I think the High boys can probably adjust to the earlystart just a bit better than Bedas and give my statisticianmate a win in his much deserved first finals appearance .2ND SEMI FINAL

Chirnside have deservedly topped the table aftera particularly good first half of the season whilst Jackers'consistency has earned them the double chance. WhenI saw these 2 teams play last month it was hard toimagine they were the top 2 teams as Jackersabsolutely slaughtered an undisciplined Parkers.Parkers have regrouped since then as shown by theirgood win away against Brighton who rolled Jackerslast week . However, Jackers were not disgraced against

Page 20: uPa - Victorian Amateur Football Association · 2015-02-24 · Danny Smith was in good touch in his back pocket and at the other end Stuart Hinchen wore Pat Mannix 'like a glove

Tonners last week as Tonners on their day were asgood as any team in the comp, and I think they canbenefit from the lessons of that loss and come out asnarrow winners today.SLAB CHALLENGE

is finished for the year. Thanks to all for participatingin the fun and spirit of the challenge .

MELBOURNE'S OWN

Looking Backby Noel Rundle

5 YEARS AGO - 1987Old Paradians advanced to the preliminary final with

a 21 point win over De La Salle O.C. O .Rs led at everychange but were given a shock in the 3rd quarter whenDe La kicked 6 goals to get to 4 points down at the lastchange. The last quarter was tight until the 20 minutemark when a Brandon Exton goal was quickly followedby one from Michael Skerritt that sealed the game .

The O.P.'s strong first half was due to the brillianceof Dominic Spillane who seemed to be loose on thewing . Mick Greene in the ruck and C .H .B . MickDeveson inspired De La's comeback .

It was heads down for Tom Johnston when hisbeloved Red Devils, Parkside, held Marcellin to 1/2time and then went down to the pressure applied bysome great play from Marcellin's Simon Lennox, MickDay, Tony Paatsch and Chris Slattery. Final scoreswere Marcellin O .C . 15 .21 to Parkside 10 .13.

Old Melburnians trailed an energetic Monash inthe first half of the 'C' preliminary final, played a great3rd term to lead by 8 points at the last change but thenwere no match for a dogged and accurate MonashBlues with final scores, Monash Blues 13.7 to O.M : s11 .11 .

Old Mentonians were very disappointing when StKevin's O .B. were on top all day in the'D' PreliminaryFinal, 15 .9 to 10.16 .

10 YEARS AGO - 198 2Chris `Lofty' Rowston played his 150th game for

Hampton Rovers when he ran onto the field for the'C' Section first semi against St Kevin's O.B. Club. Bestand Fairest in 1975 and 1981, 'D' Section Best andFairest in 1975, state team in Tasmania in 1982, Chris,a nippy. fearles rover has been a great team-man andcommittee member. I'll bet it was a big night for Chrisas the Rovers won the first semi, 24 .12 to 17.8 . It wouldhave been a sad night for Chris (Nuts) Nettlefold whoplayed his 100th game for St Kevin's.

Marcellin (A) confirmed their superiority when theyrecorded their 3rd victory for the season against the'Monds, 22 .17 to 14.9. Best were Fraser, Jones (5goals), Bourke (7 goals) (Marcellin) and Ritchie,Burke, Boyanton (Ormond) .

Banyule'blitzed'traditional rivals, Therry in the'E'second semi, winning 27 .14 to 16 .15. Stars were S .Barnes, Lydiate, Gillies (Banyule) and White, Mott,Boden (Therry) .

15 YEARS AGO - 1977Best and fairest results were as follows : 'A' Peter

Aughton ( St Bernards) 19, on count back from H .Royal ( Coburg) ; ' B' R . Shepherd (Res. O.B.) 26 fromM . Bates (Res . O.B.) 19 ; 'C' A . Flavel (UHSOB) 24from M . Yeo ( Old Carey) 21 ; 'D' P. O'Dwyer (Ass .) 26from M . Fanning ( St Kevin's)17 ; ' E' G. Towan (ANZ)21 from M . Waller (AMP) 18 ; 'F' G. Myers (Comm .

Bank) 37 from G. Miles (Bulleen-Temp.) 21 ; J .1 W.Morris ( Ormond) 20 from I . Kilpatrick ( Ivanhoe) 16 ;J .2 . M . Thompson (H . Rovers) 32 from W. Truefoldt(Res . O.B .) 19 . Can anyone name the player who wenton to play in Collingwood lsts?

Old Brighton paid tribute to a great footballer andperhaps our best ever representative' Richard

Thomas, on his 150 games - a club best and fairestwinner more times than can be remembered and alsoa 'C' Section best and fairest .

In 'A' Section first semi St Bernard's broke their runof three defeats when they were in control all day todefeat Ormond by 19 points.

Parkside's victory by 5 points over Old Xav, in 'C'first semi wastheclosest result, final scores being 15 .18(108) to 15.13 (103) . Best were : Parside, B . Clarke,Nankervis, Ridd (Now a VAFA umpire), Fitzgerald,FeIIe, Quaife (5 goals) and Old Xaverians Noonan,Hense, Peppard, McNamee, Cookesley, Lawrence(6 goals) .

MARKETING NEWSby Mike McArthur-Alle n

I am writing this from the viewpoint of both a sponsorand a supporter of the VAFA . For many years now bothmyself and Ferrari Formal Hire have been closely tiedto a multitude of sporting fraternities . During those yearsit has become very obvious that one of the greatestdifficulties faced by clubs these days is that or raisingfunds .

Traditional fund-raisers, such asthe'Pie Night' and'Car Rally', although still very popular, do not changemuch from year-to-year. Of more recent times a numberof clubs have tried something a little different . Becomingever more popular isthe'Cocktail Night' and the'DinnerDance'. However, functions such as these are perhapsnot quite as cheap to run as some of the others . By thetime the guests have paid for their tickets and hired theirdinner wearthe evening can run into afairly expensiveaffair.

We're hereto tell you that it need not cost you an 'armand a leg'. Forquite sometime now Ferrari Formal Hirehas serviced the needs of groups such as DebutanteBalls, School Formals, Corporate Dinners and others .We would like to extend those services to the membersof the VAFA . If you are planning a function requiringformal wear then it is possible to do so much moreeconomically now than it has been in the past .

For those of you who have hired a suit recently youwill be aware that the normal retail cost of a suit isapproximately $75 .00 . When a group of persons hiresuits through us the price drops considerably.Depending upon the quantity of suits required it maybe discounted by up to 50%, allowing hire prices tobegin at $36.00 . This represents a substantial reductionand should make'Black Tie' events more attractive toyour club. I will mention pricing again a little later, butfirst I would like to give you some idea of what we canoffer you in the way of services .

Ferrari Formal Hire has always prided itself on its

service as being second to none. Just as all footballteams aim to be premiers, we aim to be the best at whatwe do. For that reason we offer an unparalleled levelof service and fashion formal wear. To give you an ideaof what we can do for you the following is a short listof a few of our services :

(1) We measure your group where and when youwant ; (2) We deliver the suits where and when you want ;(3) We also pick the suits up for you .

It may well be that this particular process is notconvenient for you . If this is the case then we can offeryou another popular and very handy option .

This year we have introduced a new idea aimed atthose organisations unable to avail themselves of theservices outlined above . It involves making use of ourcustomized 'Guest Voucher' option. At your request wesupplyto you a number of Guest Vouchers (the numberis solely determined by yourselves) . These are printedwith your organisation's name, the name of the functionand the function date. The idea behind these vouchersis that the organiser of the function hands thesevouchers out to all of those people who are in need ofsuits. The guests then simply have to enter one of ourseven conveniently located stores to receive their suitand their special price.

As I mentioned earlier, there is more to say aboutprice. An attractive option to the standard discountedprice involves placing a small surcharge onto the topof the hire price. This additional charge, whether it be$5 .00 or $10.00, is refunded to the club in the form ofa donation . For example, if 30 people attend the nightyou can earn for the club an additional $150.00 to$300.00. This is just one of the available options we canoffer you .

To reiterate . Fund raising can be a very difficult taskattimes . However, should you be considering aformalfunction then we at Ferrari Formal Hire are able to helpmake that function happen .

COACHES CLIPBOARDedited by

Mike McArthur-Allen

THOUGHTS OF A 1ST YEAR COACHDon Leale - Reserves Coach, Thomastown F.C .

When appointed to the position of Reserves coachfor the Thomastown Football Club for the '92 season,I was extremely thankful to the club for giving me theopportunity to commence my coaching career. To thosewho consider themselves students of our wonderfulgame, I consider coaching to be a natural progressionfrom playing .

This is my experience and how I saw the year.Coaching is not without its trials and tribulations andmany emotions are experienced during the course ofthe season .PRESEASON

My biggest fear early was whether I could adapt tocoaching a side that would contain players that havebecome great friends of mine over the past four years .To my relief, as the year panned out, these were theplayers whom I could rely on continuously for theirsupport in what became a long and fruitless season .Preseason was approached with excitement and vigour .Not since my first season of senior football at LatrobeUniversity underthe guidance of John Simpson (currentBanyule Coach) had I had to put in such a vigoroustraining schedule . Weekly meetings, preparation fortraining sessions, match practice, player assessmentsand a coaching accreditations course - yes it was allhappening .SEASON

3 wins, 15 losses, most by large margins . A playerturnover of more than 70 people representing the clubreserves during the '92 season . Quickly I learnt thatsuccess breeds familiarity. When annual subs are duewe lose a dozen players . The more games we lost thequicker they dropped off. By showing disciplineregarding 'no training, no playing' we lost players .Initially I endeavoured to fill the dual role of ' player coach'but quickly came to the realisation that with an inexperi-enced side lacking in football intelligence, I had to fulfilmy coaching duties from the bench so as to instruct,

recognise problems and endeavour to solve them .Two important ingredients I learned early to being a

coach are :1 . Be yourself. Everyone has their own style of coach-

ing . It's your team and you are in charge. There arealways the 'lounge chair' critics with plenty to say, butdon't let this affect you adversely. Take note of these crit-icisms and use the valid ones to your advantage . Thesewill hopefully improve your coaching in years to come .

2 . Accept that this is amateur football and that thecommitment and football intelligence of your on fieldpersonnel is not always at acceptable levels . As a coach, you always give your best for the whole season . Yourlevel of commitment must be unquestionable, however, those whom you command will inevitably write a bookof excuses during a season as to training attendances, availability on match day and poor performance etc. Youmust come to terms with varying commitment and intel-ligence levels early in the season for your sanity to prevail .

At the end of the day, as coach, blame for poorperformance rests on your shoulders . I guess when Iaccepted the position of coach, that I would have asuccessful side and a premiership would be the ultimateend . If this had of been the case the I would have writtenabout all the great and wonderful things on coaching .The scribes tell me that before you taste success, experiencing the sensation of disappointment and failureis paramount to becoming a good coach . Finding thatwinning formula is difficult when negative factors asprevious mentioned are weighted against you, but youmust remain enthusiastic always.

As advice for those considering coaching for the firsttime in '93, approach the position with your eyes wideopen . Set goals for the season and be prepared, as itis not always smooth sailing . Use pieces of previoscoaches styles to formulate your own style and try toadhere to your principles when these are tested .Eventually you will find success, I hope I do .

When Training and Playing!Well done VAFA!

Our 1991 survey of players showed89% of mouthguard owners alwayswear their mouthguard at matches.

But . . . Only 10-13% always wear thei rmouthguard at training.

So, wear your professionally fittedmouthguard when training and

playing football .

Make this your GOAL in '92 .
