Max RoachTo say Max Roach was a bebop pioneer, or aparamount innovator of the drums, or aprominent social activist would be accurate.Yet these labels fall short of this Americanicon’s totality. One drummer who not onlyunderstands this idea, but has benefittedfrom Roach single-handedly changing theperception of what it means to be a drum-mer, is composer, arranger, and percussionwizard Ali Jackson. After crossing paths withRoach at age 12, Jackson was foreverimpacted, and the two would enjoy a forma-tive student-teacher connection. In a one-night-only salute to the father of moderndrumming, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestramember Jackson illuminates Roach’s con-ceptual and artistic genius. An ensemble hasbeen formed specifically for this perform-ance, featuring percussionist Victor Provost, vibraphonist Steve Nelson, pianist EmmetCohen, bassist Russell Hall, tenor saxophon-ist Wayne Escoffery, and a string quartetwith violinists Elio Bishop and Sara Caswell, violist Jeremy Kittel, and cellist EugeneFriesen.

Doug Doyle has been telling sto-ries as the WBGO NewsDirector for seventeen years.

With nine new awards from Public RadioNews Directors Incorporated (PRNDI),it seems like he’s found a way to tellthem right.Under Doyle’s leadership, the WBGO

news team was celebrated by PRNDI atits June 2015 conference in categoriesfrom sports to arts and commentary tocontinuing news coverage. Doyle is particularly proud that every-

one from full-time staffers to interns arerecognized by the awards. “Everyonehere contributes to shared knowledge,”he says. Doyle gets input from the entirestaff to keep WBGO News topical,

diverse and thorough. “Reporters helpselect stories they want to cover. If all ofour news came from this fifty-three year old’s mind, it would be too narrow tobe news.”This year’s round of national awards

confirms WBGO’s mastery of local news.

Corporate stations may have whittleddown their coverage of local issues, butDoyle continues to tap into his genuineinterest in people to fuel WBGO’s reputa-tion for great coverage of the most press-ing stories in Newark and Essex County.“When I walk down Broad Street, Ialmost always end up having a conversa-tion with someone. My daughter yells atme because I take too much time talkingwith everyone from grocery clerks topassersby on the street. I can’t help it. I’mcurious. I want to know who people areand what got them to this point.”One top example of a staff-driven lean

for a story came from intern MaxineMacias’ coverage of LBGTQ issues inNewark from the 1960s to today—a storyfrom the WBGO Journal that garneredone of the nine awards.WBGO was also recognized for

Phil Gregory and Doyle’s coverage of “Bridgegate,” and Alexandra Hill’s coverage of the controversial OneNewark Plan. Doyle will continue to seek out stories

that are thought provoking for listeners—a quality that’s getting harder to find in the privately-owned mediascape.“Commerical stations cover things thatshock. WBGO covers those stories ifthere is news behind it—but also storiesthat make us think, cry or smile. Andespecially stories that connect to jazz, rhythm and blues, of course!”
