From Fr. Steffl:

Today we celebrate the Lord’s Resurrection, Easter Sunday.

Lent is over, the tomb is empty, and we are renewed in our call

now to follow Jesus, so that we can be with Him in eternal life,

when we are called to Him. One of my favorite passages from

the Gospels is the “Road to Emmaus” appearance of Jesus to

two of His followers after Easter. It is the Gospel for Easter

Wednesday’s Mass, Luke 24:13-27. (It is also a Gospel that can

be used if there is an Easter Sunday evening Mass.) Please read

it and ponder how Jesus made Himself known to His followers

in the “breaking of the Bread,” the words the early Church used to describe the Mass and the Bread of Life, the

Eucharist. The account tells of how the Risen Jesus was walking with these two disciples, without them

knowing it was Him, until He revealed Himself to them. It is a good reminder for us that the Lord is “walking

with us” while we might not see exactly how at this difficult time.

I have been amazed at how many have been watching the Holy Redeemer live-streamed and recorded Masses

during this time. While it is not the most ideal, it is what we can do. Many have commented also about the

EWTN Station and televised Masses. For those who have cable TV, EWTN is a wonderful resource, not only

for televised Masses but their great programming!

As the “shelter in place” order has been extended by the governor, we will continue as we have been

doing, to live-stream/record our Masses until May 4th.

Next Sunday (as is each year the Sunday after Easter) is Divine Mercy Sunday. There will be an hour of

Adoration in Holy Redeemer from 4 -5 pm, with Confessions available, for anyone who would like to come –

keeping social distancing, of course. At 4:30 pm there will be a sung Divine Mercy Chaplet and this will be

live-streamed as well. At each of the churches in the gathering space there are pamphlets about Divine Mercy

for people to take.

During this time, many have shared that they have had extra time to work on their prayer life, and the

opportunity they have had to reflect on those things that they have not had their usual access to – the Mass, the

Eucharist, and the other Sacraments. Sometimes we can take for granted things after a while, until they are no

longer available to us. This has come through in the families who have lost family members to death, too, in

these last weeks, having to have a burial and only the simple prayers at the graveside and waiting until a Funeral

Mass can be said.

Thanks so much to the many who have responded to my financial appeal during this time without public

liturgies. Many have come forward, not only with their usual contribution to the parishes but have went far

beyond. Thank you for your sacrifices. We will try to organize something to put in the bulletin in the next

weeks to update everyone as to where we are. It is a chance for us all (including myself) to put a priority on our

financial stewardship to get us through this pandemic and its effects.

Last week, I found an article that was put out on our parish Facebook page titled, “This Isn’t Our First

Plague.” It mentioned various plagues in the 2000-year history of the Church and how the current one

compares, while tracing also the connection to our Faith. Many cities in central Europe will have monuments in

public squares testifying to past plagues like the “Great Plague” in the mid 1600’s, a remembrance of lives that

were lost, and the gratitude they had to the Lord, who answered their prayers to be delivered from these

illnesses and difficulties. Since we, in our generation, have not had to deal with this, we can think that we are

living in the worst of times, and yet our sufferings might be less in comparison with past generations. Please

continue to pray for medical personnel, our elected officials who have to make some difficult and

unprecedented decisions, and the sick and dying. The article can also be found at:
