Upcoming Career Events:
East Carolina University Career Ser-
vices hosted its first ever Faculty
Symposium on October 26, 2016.
The symposium entitled Preparing
for First Destination Survey Data was
held in the Murphy Center to coin-
cide with the pending release of pilot
survey results for ECU Pirate Employ-
ment Survey. Close to 100 faculty
and staff leaders learned how the
First Destination Survey data impacts
higher education and why this col-
lege scorecard initiative on career
outcomes is so important to our
graduates being career ready. The roadmap for transforming the college to career experi-
ence is changing from the traditional model of “Career Services.” A critical component of
this new approach starts with data-gathering and creating stronger partnership across the
university to help students develop successful careers. Dr. Jamienne Studley, former Dep-
uty Under Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education (2013-2016) and past president
of Skidmore College, delivered opening remarks and then joined the additional panelists -
Dr. Sam Ratcliffe (Director of Career Services at VMI & a past president of NACE) and Dr.
Nancy Whelchel (Survey Research at N.C. State University) for a question and answer ses-
sion. Dr. Virginia Hardy, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, welcomed attendees while
Provost Ron Mitchelson introduced the speakers and moderated the panel discussion.
Career Services staff looks forward to future collaborations with Academic Affairs in an
effort to impact the career outcomes of our graduates and inspire student success.

The Health Careers Fair was a recruitment event fo-cused on opportunities for students and alumni who are seeking employment within health services indus-tries. Employer attendees represented organizations throughout the United States and offer entry-level em-ployment opportunities for students. As in past years, East Carolina University Career Services also invited regional community colleges to attend the event, which included Pitt, Edgecombe, and Nash. Thirty-five em-ployers attended with over 50 individual recruiters and over 230 students and alumni attended. Through as-sessments conducted at the event, 96% of student attendees reported an overall rating of good or excel-lent experience and 97% of employers gave the event an overall rating of good or excellent.

The companies represented a variety of fields and industries including media, engineer-ing, hospitality, construction, IT, marketing, health, educa-tion, performing arts and more. Of those companies many sought specific majors while the rest were interest-ed in speaking with students from any major. Students from 88 different majors attended the fair to network and engage with employers of interest.
New Horizons ~Student Leaders ~
In efforts to expand career services to ECU students in places and times most convenient to them, Peer Career Services on
Tour began operations in the fall of 2016. In this unique program, seven student leaders completed extensive training
as Peer Career Leaders and subsequently set up shop on selected evenings from 5-7pm in residence halls and dining facili-
ties. During their inaugural tour, Peer Career Leaders visited nine
residence halls and two dining facilities.
When scheduled on site, Peer Career Leaders are available to con-
duct group presentations and meet with students one on one.
They are able to discuss career services events and programs, job
searching, resumes, and interviewing.
In addition to increasing the scope of our services, the Peer Career
Services On Tour program provides Peer Career Leaders with op-
portunities to develop and enhance their leadership skills, deepen
their understanding of career development, and actively practice
communication, public speaking, and teamwork skills.
During the spring of 2017, Peer Career Leaders are scheduled to
visit six residence halls and two dining facilities. They will also begin an outreach program to present to ECU student clubs
and organizations. For additional information on Peer Career Leaders, visit www.ecu.edu/career.

While still in physical therapy school, Clara’s immediate career goal was to pur-sue an additional year of training through a Geriatrics Physical Therapy program at the Durham Veterans Administration. Her long-term career goal is to be a knowledgeable and skilled physical therapist for the grow-ing population of older adults. “My strong-est interest is to work in a sub-acute reha-bilitation setting with patients who are recovering from a stroke, major surgery, or
other chronic condition.”
Clara was accepted into the residency program at the Durham VA and has started her career as a licensed Physical Therapist. She is gaining experi-ence in all different settings of physical therapy, gaining confidence in her knowledge and skills, and building her professional network. One of her responsibilities as a physical therapy resident is to be the physical therapist for an interdisciplinary Geriatrics clinic. It is here that she works closely with the Geriatric Medical Fellows, Pharmacy Residents, social workers, and Geriatric Psychiatrists to address all aspects of the Veteran’s needs. “I also participate in a multidisciplinary peri-operative committee to assess potential risks and needs for Veterans prior to major surgical intervention.”
These experiences and roles have already influenced Clara’s clinical decision-making and will benefit her future patients.
When asked about how Career Services assisted her, Clara related a time when Patrick Roberts gave a presentation to her class on ré-sumé construction and described all the services offered at Career Services. “Prior to my interview
for the residency, I met with Patrick for a mock interview and résumé re-view. He had provided helpful tips during his lecture, which helped me practice and prepare. The mock interview gave me a chance to prepare and practice, and get the jitters out before the real deal!”
Her advice to students is that practice makes perfect! “Even though I did not know every question that was going to be asked during my interview, because I took the time to brainstorm responses and practice with Patrick, I was not thrown off by unexpected questions during my interview. I felt prepared and confident going in to my interview because I took the time to practice with Career Services ahead of time.”

Employers were out in full force during
the fall 2016 semester recruiting ECU
students for full-time, part-time, intern-
ship and CO-OP opportunities! ECU
Career Services hosted 27 on-campus
interview sessions and 27 information
sessions and networking events reach-
ing 270 students. Employers surveyed
after participating in on-campus re-
cruiting events reported that the num-
ber one reason they were attracted to
recruit at ECU was because of the aca-
demic majors followed by the quality of
students. New companies like United
Air and the Charlotte Hornets hosted
information sessions and classroom
presentations offering various career
and internship opportunities while de-
veloping a pipeline of talent from ECU
through collaborations with faculty and
staff. During this Spring Semester we
hope employer engagement will contin-
ue to rise providing ECU students the
opportunity to implement their
knowledge learned in the classroom
into the world of work!
