Alex Van Zijl caught the business bug early in life.

He entered the work-world at the age of 15 and not long after, landed his first sales position. And that was the moment – Alex was hooked.

He filled his spare time reading every business and sales book he could get his hands on. Along the way, his enthusiasm attracted the attention of some very good mentors. Eventually, Alex had the opportunity to enrol in a post-university program for export management.

Now, he is successfully navigating the global market-place, as founder, president and owner of InterAtlas Chemical and InterAtlas Logistics.

But that doesn’t mean Alex hasn’t faced his share of challenges.

Rising above the competition

His competitors weren’t standing still and eventually that steady business growth he enjoyed since 2005, was leveling off. And in a business that is heavily regulated – InterAtlas Chemical trades and distributes basic chemi-cals and raw materials used in resins, paints and coat-ings while InterAtlas Logistics specializes in warehousing and transporting hazardous materials – it’s difficult to stand out from the competition. Everyone must play by the same rules, so products are virtually identical.

Alex decided he needed to shake things up, so he began looking at ways to take the business to the next level.

That’s when he came across Kevin D. Crone and Ignite Your Business executive coaching and consulting ser-vices. Kevin has 50+ years of business experience, from delivering professional development training to one-on-one professional coaching to running his own business, Dale Carnegie Business Group.

“I liked Kevin’s no-nonsense approach,” Alex said.

“After we played telephone tag for two days, he asked me straight out if I was serious about working with him. I was, but more so, I liked his straightforward style. I was in.”

Alex was focused on growing the business from the top down, looking at new ways to set InterAtlas apart from the competitors. Working with Kevin and the Ignite Your Business team, he realized that communication with customers was an issue.

“We talked to our clients every day, but after speaking with Kevin, we realized that we weren’t really listening,” he said.

The teams at InterAtlas Chemical and InterAtlas Logis-tics began to gather information from clients. What

services were they asking for? Were the current offer-ings able to accommodate customer needs?

This renewed focus on what clients want has been the most important result of working with Kevin, says Alex.Armed with the new data, InterAtlas looked at ways to improve their offerings to meet – or exceed – customer needs. Then they learned how to communicate those offerings, and convert those conversations into sales.

“(Our people) bought into this approach and made it their own. With success.”

Alex added that the practical skills and coaching have helped his teams to better manage projects, deal with vendors and tackle problems and issues that arise.

“For us, I saw real benefit to using these services. It’s a very efficient process and you see results very quickly if you implement what you learn,” he said.

And Alex has no reservations about calling on Kevin and the Ignite Your Business team in the future – the experience was positive all round.

“We loved working with the team in Mississauga. They’re great people who live and breathe what they teach.”

Renewed focus spells success

That’s the question being asked by business leaders in corporate board-rooms, sales managers presenting the latest numbers, and those frontline salespeople – individuals with boots on the ground, so to speak.

Over the past several years, your business has leveled off and you’ve de-cided to manage your expectations. After all, the business climate has changed. Main Street has gone global and your competitors may not only be “out-of-province,” they may be located on another continent.

Commoditization and material costs are on the upswing. Your experienced workforce is looking forward to a much-deserved break from the hectic day-to-day, but where does that leave you as a business leader?

Dale Carnegie Business Group (DCBG) Chairman Kevin D. Crone has been watching business trends and developing strategies and practices designed to grow business and improve the bottom line for almost 50 years. His ex-perience made him an ideal person to contribute to, and review, research gathered by international leaders from Dale Carnegie Training in 2013.

After lengthy study and analysis, Kevin worked with the DCBG team to bring a new offering to the Greater Toronto market, something that would inspire the people behind the products and services and spark business growth.

Ignite Your Business is an individualized approach to building sound sales strategies and growing your business.

How does Ignite Your Business work?

The Carnegie team begins with The Wakeup Call – a discussion with your executive management team to examine their current reality.

Next is The Engagement – a meeting with sales managers first, followed by a separate meeting with the salespeople.

The Wakeup Call and The Engagement provide an overview of the bigger pic-ture – business strategies, sales proce-dures and tactics, in-house processes – from diverse views.

From there, a Commercial Transition Team from your company is identified to work with Kevin, to develop new processes and redefined offerings to be shared with your current and future customers – a new story to share with the market, something to Ignite Your Business!

As the new system begins to roll out, Kevin and the Dale Carnegie team pro-vide support coaching for your sales managers, and follow-up meetings with your salespeople, helping your company successfully manage the transition.

To ensure successful implementation over the longer term, you and your team will have an opportunity to Ignite your Business again, at an annual “stretch camp” that repeats the transition process.
