AMCHAM BUSINESS BAROMETER 1/2019; Part 2

Goods and Services Deficit

The U.S. international trade deficit de- creased from $55.5 billion in June (revised) to $54.0 billion in July, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. The goods deficit decreased $1.6 billion in July to $73.7 billion. The services surplus increased $0.1 billion in July to $19.7 billion.

Producer Price Index Up

The Producer Price Index for final demand rose 0.2 percent in July, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Final demand prices advanced 0.1 percent in both June and May. On an unadjusted basis, the final demand index increased 1.7 percent for the 12 months ended in July.

Industrial Production Down

Industrial production declined 0.2 percent in July. Manufacturing production moved down 0.4 percent last month and has fallen more than 1-1/2 percent since December 2018. Mining output fell 1.8 percent in July due to Hurricane Barry, while the index for utilities rose 3.1 percent. Total industrial production was 0.5 percent higher in July than it was a year earlier.

Unemployment Down

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 164,000 in July, and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 3.7 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Notable job gains occurred in professional and technical services, health care, social assistance, and financial activities.

Gdp

Real gross domestic product (GDP) incre-ased 2.0 percent in the second quarter of 2019, according to the “second” estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Ana-lysis. In the first quarter of 2019, real GDP increased 3.1 percent.

Consumer Price Up

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 0.3 percent in July on a seasonally adjusted basis after rising 0.1 percent in June, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 1.8 percent before seasonal adjustment.

The Conference Board Leading Economic Index®

The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® for the U.S. increased 0.5 percent in July to 112.2 (2016 = 100), following a 0.1 percent decline in June, and a 0.1 percent decline in May.

“The US LEI increased in July, following back-to-back modest declines. Housing permits, unemployment insurance claims, stock prices and the Leading Credit Index were the major drivers of the improvement,” said Ataman Ozyildirim, Senior Director of Economic Research at The Conference Board. “However, the manufacturing sector continues exhibiting signs of weakness and the yield spread was negative for a second consecutive month. While the LEI suggests the US economy will continue to expand in the second half of 2019, it is likely to do so at a moderate pace.”
