Golf Pro News Continued:

Spring Golf Trip: Metro Atlanta! Our men’s spring golf trip is coming up the last of this month and first of May. We will be traveling to southwest Atlanta with stops at Summer Grove Golf Club in Newnan, Oak Mountain Golf Club in Carrollton, and The Frog Golf Club in Villa Rica, Georgia. All three courses are located just outside metro Atlanta. We will leave Clemson on Monday morning and drive to Newnan and return to Clemson on Wednesday evening, May 2. We will be staying at the Hampton Inn in Carrollton for the trip. The first (20) golfers to sign up and pay make the trip! Cost per golfer is $335.00 for golf, hotel, and travel. The only additional expense will be your meals. Additional information is available on the golf shop promotional sign up flyer. Hope to have you join us for a fun filled three-day trip! Member Invitational, May 18 & 19 This year’s annual Member Invitational will be a 27-hole event over Friday evening and Saturday morning. The official competition will begin Friday evening, following a cookout on the Solé patio. Teams will play 9 holes of best ball on Fri-day evening and then Saturday morning, we will start with a 9am shotgun start. An optional skins game will be included on Friday evening. The Saturday format is Texas Scramble on the front nine and Best Ball on the back nine. Following the completion of the Saturday round, a team “skills competition” will also take place. This year, teams will compete from several different tee set ups, including GOLD, WHITE, and PURPLE/WHITE hybrid tee distances. Each group will compete against themselves for the winner’s prize. Flight prizes will be based on the num-ber of teams in each flight. Entry fee is $200 per team. Our goal is 32 teams. Sign up in the golf shop now! Deadline for entries is May 15 th. Rick Hamilton: Hole-In-One! Congratulations to Rick Hamilton for his recent ace at hole # 12. Mr. Hamilton’s per fectly executed shot was made with his Taylormade 7 iron, from 138 yards. Witnessing his feat of excellence were Jim LaRue, Eddie Brown, and Bob Kelly. Mr. Hamilton was also a member of the Member ’s Hole-In-One club, so he collected the $230 jackpot to help pay the bar tab. Congratulations Rick! Jerry Crabtree: Hole-In-One! Well, hole # 12 was the place to be in March. A second hole-in-one was scored there by Jerry Crabtree on Friday, March 30th. Witnessing his perfect shot were: Dwight Vines, Frank Duda, and Joe Sears. Mr. Crabtree HAD rejoined the hole-in-one club after Mr. Hamilton’s ace the week before, as had several other members. Enough “rejoiners” made Mr. Crabtree’s jackpot winnings only $140, so it’s time to join up AGAIN for the “next” jackpot. In the past 18 years, we have paid out over $3,500 to members of our hole-in-one club. Don’t miss your chance to collect. They say “aces” come in threes! Who will be our third? Member Appreciation Breakfast Thanks to the 50+ members that dropped by last month for our annual Member Appreciation Breakfast. We hope every-one enjoyed breakfast and the chance to chat over coffee. We look forward to hosting this fun event again in 2019. A spe-cial thanks to Seneca Family Restaurant for again allowing us to “take over” the restaurant for a couple of hours! Senior Interclub Team The 2018 CGA Senior Interclub team matches will begin on May 16th. The Walker Course team will again compete in a group pod with: Cobbs Glen GC, The Preserve at Verdae, The Links at Stoney Point, and The Patriot Golf Club. There will be three home matches and three away matches through the end of July before the playoffs begin. Co-captains: Rick Hamilton and Eddie Brown are in charge of the team roster and team match member selections. If you would like to be listed on the team roster, please contact Rick Hamilton or Eddie Brown. Team selections are made based on availability and handicap match ups. The cost to play is $25 per match, per person and covers, golf, carts, and post-golf social Demo Day Demo Day 2018 will be taking place on Saturday May 5 from 12:00-5:00 on the driving range. We will have representa-tives from Wilson, Cobra, Titleist, Ping, Mizuno, and the Orange Whip showing off their new equipment for the 2018 sea-son. Feel free to sign up for a designated fitting session with any of these vendors in the pro shop or just stop by any time during the event

DON GARRETT, CGCS SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT April 2018

March Status The weather has been really up and down this winter. Severe cold in January, followed by a warmup (and green up) in February, then some hard freezes have been hard on the turf. In fact there is a forecast low of 37 degrees the first week of April. This is tough on the grass as it bounces in and out of dormancy. No doubt we will see some areas that will be slow to fully green up this spring. Areas with heavy shade, low mowing height and heavy traffic, in combination with the cold are likely to suffer the most damage (think the right side of #1 fairway). A course wide fertilizer application was applied on the 19th. A slow release product was used that will feed the turf for several months. Any areas that are slow to green up as mentioned above will receive an extra shot of quick release fertilizer to push them along. The frequent rains have us behind in a lot of areas, but we hope to start catching up on this in April. April Goals

During April, we begin more routine mowing and maintenance practices and less project type work. We will be brushing, rolling and making light and frequent applications of topdressing to the greens. We will also be treating the course for fire ants and spreading mulch in the remaining beds.

The greens look really beat up from all of the winter play and the lack of growth for the last 4-5 months. We will be pushing them with a little extra fertilizer to get thin areas, ball marks and cup plugs to heal up. Good Luck Ben Ben Wood has taken an assistant superintendent position at the Cliffs at Keowee Springs and his last day at The Walker Course will be April 13th. Please join me in wishing him the best in his new position.
