ThebendrepresentsatimeoftransitionthatGodisbringingtothepresenceoftheUnitedChurchinLindsay.2020isapivotalandhistoricmomentintimeforCambridgeStreetandQueenStreetUnitedChurches.Whatanexcitingandequallychallengingplaceto/indourselves—onthebendofamutualjourneyoffaithandoneness.Thegentle,/lowingSpiritofGodisleadingustonewplacesandpossibilities.
Wemaynotbeabletoseearoundthebendquiteyet,butwecanbegintoreimagineourrelationshiptogether/lowingintothefuture.Thisistheseasontoopenourdoors,openourminds,openourhearts,andopenourhandsaswenavigateunchartedwaters.
God’sSpiritisalreadywaitingforusaroundthebend,justasGod’sSpiritiswithusnow,justasGod’sSpirithasbeenwithusinthepast.Wemaynotknowwhatthefutureholds,butweknowwhoholdsthefuture.Canyouseeit?Canyoufeelit?Canyoureimagineit?
Thelandscapebeyondthebendmaystillbeunclear,butwemustcontinueourjourneybyfaith,notonlybysight.God’sSpirithasnewandwonderfulscenesandseasonsinstoreforus,justaroundthebend.

Ourcongregationalcareteamhasprovidedleadershipinbringingforwardtwothemesforstudyandre8lectionduringthisyear2019-2020:pastoralvisitationandastudyonAlzheimer’s.Theyheldtoavisionandtaskofopeningthedoorstoourneighbourhoodchurchesandtherebyprovidingopportunitiesforsharedlearningandstorytelling.
OurteamhadalsoplantedtheseedsforbridgebuildingwithQueenStreetUnitedChurch.ForthisgiftofvisionandministryIamtrulythankful.InMarchourladiesfromQueenStreetwillbeattendingateaandtourbeginningthelongprocessofadjustmenttoanewsite.ThethoughtfulnessandkindnessofourteamspeaksvolumesaboutthenatureofrealpastoralministryatCambridgeStreetChurch.
Whatispastoralministry?Ithasseveralde8initions,butperhapsattimes,itisjustaboutbeingthere,ourpresence,listeningandprovidingacupofteaorcoffee.QueenStreetwillbegintheprocessinMarchoftransitioningtoanewsite.WemovelaterinAprilbutwillstartpacking,organizinganddownsizinginthenearfuture.Thiswillnotbeeasybutwiththesupportoffriendsanythingispossible!MayGodgoaheadofustopreparetheway!

Thechurchhasthreepianosthatarenolongerinuse;wearelookingtoofferthemforfreetogoodhomes.Theyallhavebeenwellmaintainedandareingoodcondition.PleasespeaktoErwinifinterestedorifyouhaveanyquestions.
Therealwaysseemstobeconstantplanningaswemovefromoneseasontothenext.WiththeChristmasseasonbehindus,wecannowlookforwardtotheNoonHourConcertsduringLent,SpaghettiDinnerandLoonieAuctionfundraiser(doyouhaveyourticketyet?),andEaster.VoicesofVictoryjusttookpartintheafternoonservicesatourlocalnursinghomes(unfortunatelyExtendicarewasinlockdown).OurCherubChoirwillbesingingatthenursinghomeservicesonMarch8.PlansforVOV’supcomingtourhavebeenRinalizedandrehearsalsfortheirupcomingmusicalTheOldTestamentFastForwardhavejuststarted.
Doconsidercomingouttothisyear’sGoodFridayservice.IRinditoneofthemostmovingservicesofthechurchyear.ItprovidesthecontexttomakeEasterespeciallymeaningfulandtriumphant.HopetoseeyouatourNoonHourConcerts,agreatwaytogetoverthewinterblahs.

Inthefallof2019,ourchurchcouncilunanimouslyendorsedarequest
byQueenStreetUnitedChurchtomovefromitscurrentlocationonMaryStreet to our church facility. An informal congregational meeting forinformationpurposeswasheldinSeptembertopresenttheQueenStreetrequest to the wider membership of Cambridge Street. We were veryhappytohearthatQueenStreethadvotedinfavourofmovingitschurchoperationtoCambridgeStreetduringApril2020.
Theirmemberswill rent space fromus for their church services in thelowerhall.Rev.RobinwillstillbelocatedinthesameofHiceupstairsandQueenStreet’sChurchCouncilwillmeet in the parlour on the second Sunday of eachmonth. Theywill count theiroffering in the lower kitchen, hold their choir practice in the choir room after their churchservice,andholdmanyoftheirothergatheringsintheUpperRoom.Theirchurchsecretarywillworkoutof the library;herofHicehourswill beTuesday toFriday from9a.m. till noon.Thelibrarywill stillbeavailable forourmembers togeta librarybook if required.QueenStreetUnitedChurchwill be starting tomoveover their furniture theweek startingApril 20and their >irst churchservicewillbeSunday,April26,2020.Time: 9:20a.m. to10:20a.m.Theircoffeehourwillbeheldinthegymshortlyaftertheirserviceandwillbecompletedbefore our coffee time takes place. Parkingwill be a challenge, and for thosewho aremoremobile,thereisparkingonFrancisStreet,VictoriaAvenueandmanyotherstreetsaroundthechurch.WehopetohaveafewmoreaccessibleparkingspotsforSundays.

WelookforwardtotheKawarthaHighlandsPresbyterialAGMonMarch3atTrinityUnitedinBobcaygeonwherethespeakerwillhighlightWomenforChangeinZambia,
whichistheNationalUCWFive-Yearinitiative.

eventwillbeCityofKawarthaLakesCouncillorTracyRichardson,andCKLDirectorofDevelopment
ServicesChrisMarshall.
CouncillorRichardsonandDirectorMarshallwillreviewtheCity’sHealthyEnvironmentPlan,as
wellasexplainproceduresonhowtoproperlyrecyclehouseholdmaterials,includingplastics.The
HealthyEnvironmentPlanwasadoptedbyCityCouncillastyearandincludesmanygoalsand
initiativesforthemunicipalitytostriveforinordertoreducethecollectivecarbonfootprintofCKL.
ThePlancanalsoserveasaguideforalllocalhouseholdstostudyasweidentifywaysthat
everyonecandivertmaterialsfromourlandMills,andcutdownontheuseofnon-renewableitems.

TheEnvironmentalActionGroupoftheFaith
DevelopmentTeamhasorganizedanopportunityformembersofthechurchtovisitCanada’sonly
experientiallearningfacilitydedicatedtoelectriccars.OnThursday,April23,wewillbetravelling
tothePlug‘NDriveEVDiscoveryCentreinNorthYork,wherewewillhaveaninformationsession
tohelpusbetterunderstandtheenvironmentalandeconomicbeneMitsofelectrictransportation.In
addition,therewillbeanopportunitytotestdrivedifferentElectricVehiclemodels.Thereisnocost
toattendthePlug‘NDrivesessionandanyinterestedmembersofthecongregationareinvited.
Plug‘NDriveisnotasalescentre.Ithasbeenestablishedtoprovideaone-stopdestinationfor
informationaboutelectricvehiclesandtotestdrivemodels,aswellastolearnaboutcharging

IneedtostartthisarticlebysayingthatI'mnotanexpert,andIhaven’tmadeupmymindabout
thetitlequestion—infact,asyou’llsee,Ihavelotsmorequestions!ThefactisthatIdon’treally
knowwhyIclapsometimesinchurchandnotothers.
Forinstance,oneofthemaintimeswe’removedtoclapisafteraparticularlypowerfulanthemor
solo.We’resoblessedatCambridgeStreetwiththeincrediblerangeofbeautifulmusicthat’ssung
andplayedaspartofourworshipservices.Wegettoheareverythingfromthecrystallinetonesof
thebellchoirtopowerfulcontemporaryanthemstobeautifulbaroqueorganmusictotheheartfelt
refrainsoftheCherubChoirtofoot-stompingnumbersbytheVoicesofVictorytosorrowfulsoloson
GoodFridaytoupbeatworshipbandaccompaniment.Naturallywewanttoshowappreciationor
expressthejoythemusicmakesusfeel.Oftenwedothatbyclapping.
ButIsometimeswonderwhyweonlyclapforsomemusicalofferingsandnotothers.Itseemslike
it’stheloud,infectioussongsthatgarnerapplause,orthosesungbychildrenandyouth.Butifwe
applaudtoshowencouragementforyoungpeople,forinstance,whydon’twedosowhentheyread
scripture?Ifit’stoexpressappreciationbecausewearemoved,whydon’tweapplaudthequiet,
emotionalpieces?Or,forthatmatter,thesermon?Andwhatmessagedoesitsendwhenweclapfor
onesingerormusicianorgroupandnotanother?
YoumayremembertheetiquettecolumnistMissManners.Sheoncewroteaboutthistopicthat
there’sadifferencebetweenreactionsthatarisefromreligiousaweorjoy,andonesthataremeant
toshowapprovalof,assheputsit,“theachievementsofourfellowmortals.”Herpointwasthatthe
latterrunstheriskofturningsomethingofferedaspraiseorworshipintoaperformance.
Andyet,wesometimesapplaudthebaptismofachildintoourchurchfamily—asacrament.Ifyou

Willie,ashewasknown,wasthesecondsoninthefamousFlavellefamilyinLindsay.Theirstoryisamazingconsideringtheirdif>icultstartasnewIrishimmigrantstoPeterborough.DorotheaFlavelleandher>ivechildrenallusedtheirMethodistfaithasaplatformforpersonalsuccess.
ItwasDorothea’sbrotherJosephR.Dundaswholedtheboys’businesssuccessandbroughtthemtoLindsayjustafterthegreat>ireonKentStreetwherehewasamerchant.WillieFlavellecamein1871toworkwithbrotherJohnD.andUncleJosephinthe>irmofCluxtonandDundasinthenewbrickKeenanblockonKentStreet.ThiswasalsotheyearthatJ.R.Dundasarrangedthemortgageforthe>irstbrickMethodistchurchonourcurrentsite.
By1877DundasandFlavellehadbecomeaconsortiumholdingallitsbusinessventureswhichwereexpandingrapidly.JustabovetheLindsaylockstheyhadthelargegrainmillingplanttotakeincerealcrops.Willietookineggs,butterandcheesefromlocalfarmersinexchangefordrygoodsfromthestore.Willieinitiatedthe>irstcoldstorageplantforthestorageofperishablefoodsandby1888wasshippingthesetoEnglandinexchangeforBritishgoods.MostofthisBritishmerchandisewasnotpreviouslyavailableinUpperCanada.
By1880J.R.Dundashadturnedhisinteresttofederalpoliticsandwasinvolvedin>inancialholdingsinToronto.WillieandMaryAirdFlavellehadsixchildrenandpurchasedtheirhomeat26ColborneSt.W.in1897.ThisisthelargebrickhouseatthenortheastcornerofCambridgeStreetatColborne.Theyaddedthelargeverandaandroomsontheeastside.Ithasremainedaprominentlandmarktothisday.
Thenextacquisitionin1912wasVictoriaCreameryatthecornerofKentandCambridgewhichbecamethesiteoftheircoldstoragefacilityandeventuallySilverwoodsDairy.
WillieandMary’ssocialliferevolvedaroundthisMethodistchurchwhereWilliewaschurchschoolsuperintendentformanyyears.Theirchildrenalltookanactiveroleinchurchlife.IncommunitylifehewaspresidentofVictoriaSavingsandLoanfor42yearsanddirectoronmanyotherlocalboards.IfyoulookonthebackwallofoursanctuaryyouwillseetheplaqueerectedbytheirfamilyinmemoryofWillieandMary.
Williediedatage90in1943.Thefuneraltookplaceintheirhomewithmanyprovincialdignitariesattendingaswellasthelargefamily.Thehousewasfullanditwasasigni>icantoccasionforLindsay.

A womanwasdiagnosedwithaterminalillnessandgiventhreemonthstolive.Sheaskedherpastortocometoherhometodiscussher9inalwishes.Shetoldhimwhichsongsshewantedsungatherfuneral,andwhatscripturestoread,andwhichout9itshewantedtobeburiedin.
Thenshesaid,“Onemorething.Iwanttobeburiedwithaforkinmyhand.”
Thepastorwassurprised.Thewomanexplained,“Inallmyyearsofattendingchurchsocialsandpotluckdinners,Ialwaysrememberthatwhenthedishesofthemaincoursewerebeingcleared,someonewouldinevitablyleanoverandsay,‘Keepyourfork.’Itwasmyfavoritetime,becauseIknewsomethingbetterwascoming,likevelvetychocolatecakeordeep-dishapplepie--somethingwonderful.So,Iwantpeopletoseemethereinthatcasketwithaforkinmyhandandwonder,‘What’swiththefork?’Then,Iwantyoutotellthem,‘Keepyourfork,becausethebestisyettocome.’”
Thepastor'seyeswelledupwithtearsofjoyashebidthewomangoodbye.Herealizedthatshehadabettergraspofheaventhanhedid,andknewsomethingbetterwascoming.
Atthefuneral,whenpeopleaskedhimwhyshewasholdingafork,thepastortoldthemoftheconversationhe'dhadwiththewomanbeforeshedied.Hesaidhecouldnotstopthinkingaboutthefork,andknewtheyprobablywouldnotbeabletostopthinkingaboutit,either.Hewasright.

UntilwestartedattendingCambridgeStreetUnitedChurchlastyear,
myhusbandNickandIdidn’tfeelpartofacommunity.I’dmovedtoLindsayin2006aftergrowingupinWoodvillewhereeveryonekneweveryoneandparticipatedinactivitiestogether,strengtheningourcommunity.Unfortunately,wedidn’thavethatexperienceinLindsay.
WhenweapproachedCambridgeStreet,searchingforasenseofbelonging,wewerepleasedtoseetherainbowHlagasweknewthisplacewouldbewelcoming,andbyexample,helpinstillinourdaughtersomeofthesocialjusticevalueswithwhichweengage.
Throughthewelcomeofthecongregationandthethought-provokingweeklysermonsthatchallengeustolistenandactinJesus’way,weknewthepeopleherewerespecialandwouldbecomeourcommunity.AfterhearingmembersspeakabouttheAfHirmingprocess,NickandIfeltthisiswhat’sbeenmissingfromothersocialjusticework–it’sonethingtobewelcoming,inclusive,andapositiveenvironment,butit’sanothertohaveequitableopportunityforeveryonetoparticipate.
ThatenlightenmentledustojointheAfHirmingMinistryActionGroupsowecouldincreaseourunderstandingandattempttorespondtothechallengeofactinginJesus’wayofjusticeforpeoplewithdiversesexualorientations,genderidentities,andforallmarginalizedpeople.ThroughourdiscussionsandreadingsintheAfHirminggroup,abigtake-awayisthatweneedtolisten(again,asJesuswould)tohearwhatbarriersexisttofullparticipationinourchurchcommunity(theimperativepartofourAfHirmingCovenant).Untilweknowthebarriers,wecan’tbeneHitfromtheparticipationofallpeople.
Forexample,asaHinancially-stable,white,cisgenderperson,Ifeel“privileged”(ratherthanmarginalized);yetasanewMum,Ican’tmakemeetingsworkwithkiddo’sschedule.Shenapsorgoestobedwhenthegroupsmeet,soI’vemissedmeetingsforthegroupsIbelongto.I’msurethereareothersinourcommunitywhowouldlovetoparticipate,butalsocan’tattendmeetings.Forouryoungfamily,thisisa“barriertoparticipation.”Allthegroupsareexcellentatemailing,andourAfHirmingGrouphashadrichemaildiscussions.Iwonder:couldGoogle’scollaborativeoptionsandsocialmediaincreaseparticipationinourgroups,justastechnologyincreasesourcongregationeachweekthroughlivestreaming?
Bybeingaswelcomingandcaringasyouare,you’reinvitingpeopleintothechurchandhelpingthemfeelcomfortabletoHindtheirvoicetosharetheirstories.Bylisteningwithoutjudgement,andthenactingtoremovebarrierstoparticipation,communitiesarestrengthened.Myfamilyisgratefultohavefoundthiscommunity.I’mproudthatourdaughterswilllearnhowto“liveintoGod’sjusticeforall”throughyourexample.
