CIRCLE OF TAPAWINGO

This is a free, week long overnight camp program in Sweden, Maine, for girls who have experienced the death of a parent. Our youngest campers are entering fourth grade and our oldest are entering ninth. Circle Camps for Grieving Children offers programs nationally and our Maine camp is our largest with nearly 150 girls expected to enroll for August 2014. This is the 12th year of providing campers with days filled with fun and meaningful activities. The waterfront is constantly busy, the arts and crafts projects decorate the dining room, and campers participate in basketball games, hilarious talent shows, and poignant campfire services. During the week, at different times, we address the issue of having lost a parent and offer various grief activities that both support and help heal. We know that our campers gain so much from being around peers who understand how they feel and how their lives have been changed by a parental death. Circle 2014 will be held from Sunday, August 24th through Friday, August 29th. We expect to fill enrollment quickly. If you have any potential referrals or questions, please call Cathy Spear at 781-820-3388. Also, please take a look at our website, www.circlecamps.org

Medomak Valley High School Varsity baseball coach Scott Hastings will be offering a throwing clinic for students in grades 3 - 8 who live in RSU#40. The clinic will run from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. on February 25th, March 4th, March 11th, March 18th, and March 25th in the gymnasium at MVHS. Attendees may go to any or all of the clinics and there is no charge. Attendees will need to have sneakers and a baseball glove. The clinic will focus on proper throwing mechanics This is a great opportunity to begin throwing before baseball season begins. Though this clinic will focus on pitching, it will be beneficial to those who play any baseball position. No registration is required, but anyone with questions about the clinic can email Coach Hastings at [email protected] or leave a message at the high school at 832-5389.

Science Olympiad will meet the Monday of vacation, February 17th, from noon to 4:00. It is very important for members to let Mrs. Kelly know if they will not be able to attend a practice. The state competition is Saturday, March 1st at 7:30 a.m. at the University of Maine at Orono.

CAMP O-AT-KA

Camp O-AT-KA offers a one week program for boys aged 10 - 15 who deserve the chance to attend a great summer camp, but cannot afford the cost. The Dennen Week program is an opportunity for boys to gather in fellowship and cooperation with their peers. Campers can explore art, play sports, learn new skills, uncover hidden talents and experience nature while having a fun week on the shores of Lake Sebago. Dennen Week is modeled on our founder’s original vision of this very special place. Reverend Ernest Dennen firmly believed that given the right opportunity, in the right environment, every boy would be able to raise his sights and aspire to loftier goals. Reverend Dennen believed that “It is better to build boys than to mend men.” We soundly affirm that belief and we want to put it into action for the deserving students that you recommend. This is the 16th year of this program and we are offering 140 spots for the week of August 17th through August 23rd. The goal of Dennen Week is to help build character and self esteem through rigorous activities, challenging each boy at his own level. There is a small camper’s fee of $25 to help cover items such as t-shirts and food. If that cost is prohibitive, we offer a small number of waivers so as not to stand in the way of opportunity. If a boy is accepted into this program and does not have the necessary clothing or equipment, we will do all that we can to facilitate his participation. You can get more information at dennenweek.com, or by calling 1-800-818-8455 or 787-3401. For an application, please see the office at Medomak Middle School.

Please keep us in mind when cleaning out your children’s closet! We are in need of appropriate girl’s clothing to have on hand in the office. There are occasions that arise when a student needs to borrow a clothing item for the day. You may drop your donations off at the main office. Thank you!

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION

We are collecting box tops for education to help our school earn cash! Please make sure they are not expired and cut the box tops to size, then put them in a baggie or envelope. Have your child drop them off to Mrs. Shelmerdine in the health office. Thank you!

Live Auction 6pm Medomak Middle School Gym

Attention Parents & Students! We are getting ready for our Sixth Annual Medomak Middle School Auction! The money raised by this popular event will be split between the 7th and 8th grade classes and used to fund that fabulous class trip to Boston!!! We need your help to make this fundraiser successful! Our goal is for every student to contribute in some way. For past auctions, students have asked area businesses for donations and businesses have graciously donated gift certificates, services and items from their shelves! Local fishermen have donated fresh seafood! Contractors have donated yards of gravel and mulch! Bidders have delighted in the many gift certificates available! Families have shown their creativity with woodworking, knitting, crocheting, sewing, quilting, crafting, cooking, jewelry-making, basket weaving, painting, and a number of other talented gift ideas. We have had many different themed gift baskets! Have you ever bought something that you never have used? Donate it! Have you received a gift that you couldn’t return? Donate it! The options are endless! We also have a Silent Auction early in the evening. That’s a great place to find a treasure! There will be a concession stand that evening. You may also help out by donating food or your time. There will be more information coming from the concession organizers, Mr. McClellan and Mrs. Robinson. Students will be hearing more about this shortly, and they will be receiving information regarding business requests for donations. Watch the MMS newsletter for updates! The success of this evening depends on your attendance! Please mark April 5th on your calendar, and bring a friend or two for an evening of fun, good buys and good food!!!

Thank you for your help and support!

Health Office Newsletter

Love Your Teeth – Take Care of Your Smile! Your teeth are covered with a sticky film called plaque that can contribute to tooth decay and gum disease. Plaque contains bacteria, which following a meal or snack containing sugar can release acids that attack tooth enamel. Repeated attacks can cause the enamel to break down, eventually resulting in cavities. Plaque that is not removed with thorough daily brushing and cleaning between teeth can eventually harden into calculus or tartar. This makes it more difficult to keep your teeth clean. When tartar collects above the gum line, the gum tissue can become swollen and may bleed easily. This is called gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease. You can prevent plaque buildup and keep your teeth cavity-free by regularly visiting the dentist, brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between your teeth with dental floss daily. Flossing is an essential part of any oral health care routine. The American Dental Association recommends flossing at least once a day to achieve optimal oral health. By flossing daily, you help remove plaque from the areas between your teeth where the toothbrush can't reach. This is important because plaque that is not removed by brushing and flossing can eventually harden into calculus or tartar. Flossing also helps prevent gum disease and cavities. The most important thing about flossing is to do it. Pick a time of day when you can devote an extra couple of minutes to your oral hygiene. People who are too tired at the end of the day may benefit from flossing first thing in the morning or flossing after lunch. And don’t forget, children need to floss too! You should be flossing your child’s teeth as soon as he or she has two teeth that touch. Because flossing demands more manual dexterity than very young children have, children are not usually able to floss well by themselves until they are age 10 or 11. Keep in mind that flossing should not be painful. You may feel discomfort when you first start flossing, but don’t give up. With daily brushing and flossing, that discomfort should ease within a week or two. If your pain persists, talk to your dentist. If you find flossing difficult, consider a different flossing method. People who have difficulty handling dental floss may prefer to use another kind of interdental cleaner such as a wooden plaque remover, dental pick or pre-threaded flosser. Ask your dentist how to use them properly to avoid injuring your gums. It could be that you simply need to try another type of dental floss—waxed, unwaxed, thick or comfort floss. Stick with it and you’ll have adopted a healthy hobby for life.
