2 ~ TALK OF THE WALK NOVEMBER 2019

INDEXNEWS FROM NOELLESeason is HERE!!! Let the celebrations begin. Cooler weather and hot events are coming your way at your Southwest Florida Paradise. We are excited about the return of all our seasonal residents and a full schedule for shows, dances and outings.

This year, the Activities Department is using the Event Ambassador program to its fullest potential. Most events will have a member of the Activities Advisory Committee who will work with me as an Ambassador. We will collaborate on themes, decorating, volunteer coordination and clean-up. We are always looking for volunteers. My committee is 14 incredible individuals with many talents. With over 200 events each year, we need lots of hands to get the job done. Can you help? Please

register as a volunteer at the Activities Office.

This Season you will see a big increase in technology. It won’t be long before you will be able to sign up for events online from the comfort of your home. No more long lines at the Town Center front desk. With all technology, there will be a bit of an adjustment, but I think you will enjoy the ability to see who is also coming to the event and getting an email reminder that you signed up for an event.

At the beginning of each Season, I send out a plea. PLEASE SIGN UP EARLY. We do not sell tickets at the door for any event EXCEPT for BINGO. Almost all events are assigned seating.

Please join our email distribution list so that you will be aware of upcoming deadlines, extensions, cancellations and seats still available. Catered events and theater tickets will have deadlines that are 2 weeks or more before the event. Last minute signing up will not be available. Please do your best to plan accordingly. I have created a 2019/2020 Events Flyer so that you can “Mark Your Calendar”. Please use this resource and don’t miss out on a single event.

I am SO excited about this Season. Our renovations have made VillageWalk “The Talk of the Town”. Our entertainers have been very impressed with our new performing space. I can’t wait to show off our beautiful Town Center and fabulous residents who know how to live life to the fullest.

Our Activities Advisory Committee is currently looking for one additional member. I prefer a year around resident, who has a creative nature, a desire to volunteer and attends most events. Our committee is made up of incredible “cheerleaders”. Let me know if you are interested in joining the squad.

Smiling With Gratitude,

Noelle

Due to the high volume of activities and for more efficient tracking purposes, payment is required with all reservations. There will be a 72-hour window for residents who are out of town. For special events, including dinner dances, there will be a full refund for cancellations made 7 days prior to the event. For day trips, the minimum cancellation is 15 days prior. For tickets purchased, such as theatre, sporting events, and other events as specified, ALL SALES ARE FINAL. For all activities reservations, please go to the HOA Office window. Please keep in mind that seating charts for events are a GUIDELINE. In some cases the room layout will change or we will not sell out, forcing us to alter the layout.

Message from the General Manager Hello residents of VillageWalk Bonita,

As residents begin returning to the community for winter season, our goal is to ensure a pleasant surprise at the numerous enhancements made over the last year. This includes

landscaping and new amenities, as well as improvements to existing amenities. Other upgrades are also in process such as new fuel dispensers and a new carwash system.

Management works closely with your Board of Directors on a daily basis to ensure that we are doing everything possible to add as much value as we can to an already GREAT community. At the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about – YOU, the VillageWalk of Bonita resident! We want you to know that we truly care, and if you ever have any suggestions on how we can improve by all means please let us know. Our doors are always open.

Thank you,

John Rowland, LCAM General Town Manager

HOA Board of Directors Meetings Online Announcing a new way to view the HOA Board of Director meetings each month. You no longer need to be in VillageWalk to access the broadcast live. The new process will replace the use of channel 195 which is only available within VillageWalk. Below is the process to initially setup and access the live streams. You can also use the process to view the recordings of the meetings anytime you wish via the internet.

Setup Process:1. YouTube account- if you do not have a YouTube or Gmail account, go to YouTube.com and follow the Sign In instructions to create one.- if you already have a YouTube account log in to the account. Alternatively, if you have a Gmail account, login to that account. In the upper right hand corner, you will see a 3x3 matrix of dots. Click that and select YouTube to get to your YouTube account.

2. Setup YouTube Subscription- Once you are logged in to YouTube, enter VW AVTeam into the Search.- Click on the link to that YouTube channel.- Once on the channel's page click the Subscribe link.

3. Access live streams- Once you have completed steps 1 and 2 above you can access the live stream of the Board meetings on YouTube. Go to YouTube.com. On the left of the page you will see the option labelled Subscriptions. Click that option. Once the meeting has actually started, a small thumbnail snapshot of the meeting will appear with a box in red that says Go Live. Click that box to view the live stream. Stream will be available as the meetings begin. The thumbnail and Go Live box will not appear until then so if you log on to the page early you will not see these boxes until the meeting starts.

4. Access recorded Board meetings- Within about an hour of the completion of a Board meeting, the video will be available for replay. Go to the VW AVTeam YouTube channel (follow the process in step 3 above). You will see a listing of all available Board meeting replays; simply click the link for the meeting you wish to view. Note that links to the videos will still be available from the VW website. The HOA office does not accept cash.

Checks and Credit Cards only.

DON’T FORGET to wear your helmet while bicycling in the community. For anyone

16 years or younger, it is the law!

• No overnight street parking permitted

• Golf carts and bicycle riders MUST give an audible warning when approaching pedestrians. Please SLOW down and pass with care.

• Pedestrians have the absolute right of way at CROSSWALKS. Vehicles must STOP when anyone is within a crosswalk. We have many that have no signs. Be prepared to suddenly stop.

• Please come to a complete STOP at Stop signs. That applies to bicycle riders too, who must obey ALL traffic laws.

• All Golf Carts must be registered with the HOA office, insured and only driven by licensed drivers over the age of 16.

• WILD LIFE- Please do not feed ANY animals. Do not place trash out any earlier than the morning of pick up…it attracts animals.

• Use caution while kayaking/canoeing in our waterways. Swimming is not allowed.

• Please do NOT ride bikes or skateboards on the Town Center walkways. Signs are posted which list the restrictions. These walkways are pedestrian pathways only. Please be mindful of the restrictions; they are in place to protect all our residents.

• Please pick up dog waste and dispose of it properly.

Safety Tips In Your Home and CommunityHere are some tips that the Lee County Sheriff’s Office feel you should know. Even though we live in a safe

community there are many outsiders in our community every day. No community is totally secure.

IN YOUR HOME

• Lock your house whenever you leave it. If you have an alarm system, turn it on when you leave.

• If you do not have a glass door or sidelight install a 180 degree peep hole.

• If you do have a glass door or sidelight and it is not high impact glass, change your lock to have a keyed lock inside. Its easy to break the glass and just turn the knob to unlock the door.

• Keep your garage door closed at all times (also in the VW rules).

• If you have a glass door or sidelight change your dead bolt lock to have a keyed side on the interior. Do not leave the key in the lock.

• When away keep at least one light on inside your home.

• Do not hide keys outside your home. Do not mark your keys with your name or address.

• Do not advertise that you live alone.

• DO NOT OPEN YOUR DOOR FOR STRANGERS.

IN YOUR CAR

• ALWAYS LOCK YOUR CAR!

• If you think you are being followed do not drive home. Drive to the nearest police station, fire house or gas station.

• If you have car troubles, raise the hood and stay in the car with the doors locked and windows closed. If someone stops to help and you did not make a call for help, ask them to do it for you. Only crack the window when speaking with them.

• Carry a cell phone.

• Park in well lighted areas.

Hurricane Season, Be Prepared

Hurricane season will continue through November 30th. Florida can be threatened at anytime during this season. The information contained in this letter will help you prepare for a hurricane or other severe weather emergency. This will help you understand how your Association will prepare your community for an emergency. This letter has also been written to help you take precautions to protect your family and property. Please take a moment to read this very important information. The Board of Directors of VillageWalk of Bonita Springs HOA and KW Property Management & Consulting would like to ensure that all unit owners receive as much information as possible to aid in the preparation for any upcoming storm.

A tropical storm or hurricane can develop within hours threatening the area. During these months, special precautions need to be taken by everyone in the community. The following terms are used by weather forecasters: HURRICANE WATCH-A hurricane may strike our area within 48 hours. HURRICANE WARNING-A hurricane may strike within 36 hours. 20 ~ TALK OF THE WALK NOVEMBER 2019

CLUBS

HOOKED ON BOOKS I Wednesday, November 13, 2019 • 1:00 p.m.We will meet at 1 pm at the Town Center to discuss “Unsheltered" by Barbara Kingsolver. Nina Iraggi will be leading the discussion.

Willa Knox and her husband followed all the rules as responsible parents and professionals, and have nothing to show for it but debts and an inherited brick house that is falling apart. The magazine where Willa worked has folded; the college where her husband had tenure has closed. Their dubious shelter is also the only option for a disabled father-in-law and an exasperating, free-spirited daughter. When the family’s one success story, an Ivy-educated son, is uprooted by tragedy he seems likely to join them, with dark complications of his own.

If you want to be on our waiting list, please call Dorothy at 390-9417.

HOOKED ON BOOKS IIThursday, November 7th, 2019 - 6:30 p.m.Hooked on Books II will meet at our usual spot at 6 p.m. for our optional "Preface", followed by our regular meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Ellen will be leading our discussion of Tara Westover's "EDUCATED."

Lacking any formal education, Tara Westover, PhD, enrolled in Brigham Young University as a teenager. After graduating with a B.A., she earned two degrees from Cambridge: a Masters in Philosophy, and a PhD in history. This is only a small part of her accomplishments. An inspiring and true story written by her.

If anyone has any questions, would like to be placed on our waiting list for book club, and/ or to RSVP, please contact Michele Cudnik at: [email protected]

HOOKED ON BOOKS lll Wednesday, November 6th• 1:00 p.m. We will be meeting Wednesday Nov 6 at 1 PM in the Towne Center as we review " Where the Crawdads Sing" by Delia Owens.

For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so called Marsh Girl.

Sara Knopt will review with lead the discussion this month.

Upcoming on December 4th also at 1 pm., we will be reviewing "The Other Einstein" by Marie Benedict. Eileen Cohen will be leading the discussion described in the tradition of The Paris Wife and Mrs. Poe. This read offers us a window into the brilliant, fascinating woman whose light was lost in Einstein's enormous shadow.

VILLAGE WALK GARDEN CLUB

General Meeting: Tuesday, November 12 • 11:00 amA hands on workshop will be presented by Janice Miller, a National Garden Club Master Judge. Participants will learn how to make a Creative line form design using minimal plant flora and a lot of creativity. The workshop will take place after the General Meeting. Participation requires a $10 fee and registration before November 1st. Participants will bring shears or clippers, a trash bag and their plant material. Suggested plant material for this type of design are the following: palm leaves; sansavaria leaves; linear drift wood or heavy vines; large pods; and feature flowers such as Bird-of-Paradise; large ginger; anthurium or other large flowered stem. The VWGC will provide the oasis, container and U-Glu. Please direct any questions to Diane McMiillen at [email protected] or [email protected].

Butterfly Garden NewsStop by the Butterfly Gardens and enjoy a tranquil respite. The gardeners have worked diligently this summer to maintain and enhance the gardens. Many plants have been labeled with their common name as well as the botanical name. Those plants that are native to southwest Florida and are host plants for butterfly caterpillars have been indicated on the labels.

Bocce Club members should watch their emails for announcements about upcoming tournaments, clinics, etc.

Registration for new members is open. Please contact [email protected] for registration information.

Bocce balls are provided by the HOA in the storage box which opens with the “old” gym key. If you don’t have one, or it doesn’t work, please ask for a new one at the HOA window. Measurers, provided by the Bocce Club, are also in the box. Please do not use the broom if you have not been instructed on the proper method of grooming the courts, and never when the courts are wet. Lastly, please move the scoreboard pegs by holding the bar, not the red and green circles, as they tend to snap off.

Have you noticed the 4 new Australian Clean Sweep Drag Mats on the tennis courts? Here are some tips:

• Each drag mat has the word UP with an arrow on the metal bar. Please make sure the correct side is facing up (it should have the small plastic "teeth" pointed UP)

• When done, please hang it vertically on the fence by the doors using the S hook provided.

• The hook should be high enough so the mat is OFF the ground yet not too high that shorter people have difficulty reaching the hook.

• Please do not fold it over the short fences. If it becomes kinked it will not function properly.

• Do not worry that the front row of the Aussie Clean Sweep does not contact the court – it is not designed to do so.

• For grooming the court under wet conditions it can be advantageous to use the Aussie Clean Sweep upside down. This helps prevent Har-tru clogging in the mat.

Don't have someone to play tennis with? No worries! We have several sessions you can simply 'walk-on' here at VW where ALL levels are welcome! On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the women get together at 8 am for 'walk-on' women's doubles. The men get together at 8 am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays! Enjoy mixed doubles? Do you have a passion for organizing and helping with social events? Would you like to be a part of the tennis social planning group? If so – please contact us at [email protected] today!

WITH GREAT THANKS TO THE “PLAYERS CLUB”! A few years ago, a group of tennis players had a vision. It was a fine vision, indeed; to greatly enhance the eight Har-tru tennis courts, and maintain the exceptional work that had already started. After many meetings and some outstanding seed money from generous folks; the “Players Club” was born! We ALL greatly appreciate the many hours of volunteer work, expert guidance and much needed donations over the years. The awning over the bleachers, the ability to see the court reservations in the gazebo, group text’s when the courts were not playable, expert guidance in court maintenance…just to name a few things. And – they have finished off the donations with a flourish! Brand NEW for your use and pleasure is a state of the art tennis ball machine (pictured top left), as well as line brushes (pictured bottom left) that work perfectly! Soon to come will be a proximity scanner for ball machine rental program too! How can we begin to thank the Players Club members and its Board for their generosity? We are all so very thankful.

Thank you John Thawley, for your vision, your countless hours of volunteer work; and your never ending passion for making our courts “world class” caliber. Your time in Village Walk ended much too soon.
