P3/4 ‘Ethnic Expressions’ A steady stream of guest speakers has been sharing their cultural practices and traditions with the P3/4 class, as they inquire into how different ethnic groups express themselves. As part of their research focus students have been developing note-taking skills and recording the key information that each speaker has shared.

P1 trip to Olasiti- Education outside the Classroom P1 students managed to just avoid the onset of ‘the rains’ on Thursday, when they travelled to Olasiti to look at different homes, the materials they are constructed from, and the way in which they are built. Field trips are an important, and exciting, part of the curriculum and P1 couldn’t wait to share their experience when they returned to school.

A house is important so people can sleep, be healthy and safe. Nathalie Some houses had electricity from the sun. Santiago One house had a bathroom outside. Fionn Arlene's house has two tents for rooms. Daniella

Student Council News The Primary Student Council is planning a ‘Book Sale’ for the week beginning Monday November 26th. It will be held each lunch time and, after they meet next Thursday morning, they will be sharing with you lots of information about how it will operate. There will be both new and pre-loved books for sale. Remember to check next week’s newsletter for all the details and put a note in your diary! Thank you, from Primary Student Council

Welcome back for another busy quarter. With only 7 weeks until the December/January break there will be lots of exciting events to look forward to. This quarter we send home written reports and hold Student Led Conferences, so keep reading for further information on these. The Student Council and Miss Chelsea are also planning some special events- we’ll keep you informed as the planning progresses. Best wishes, Maree Raeburn Head of Primary/PYP Coordinator ( [email protected] )

P Greetings from Secondary! Welcome back all! We hope you enjoyed the two week break! Calendar Date Changes Please note that after much consideration and deliberation about what is best for our students, we are changing two key dates on the calendar. The Secondary production will now be held on Wednesday Dec.5th and Thursday Dec.6th. Further, the Visual Arts Fine Arts evening will now be scheduled for Thursday Jan.31st. Please make the necessary changes to your family calendar! Parent Teacher conferences We look forward to seeing all our families represented at the Parent-Teacher conferences next Monday and Tuesday. Appointments can be made at the main office but slots are filling up fast! The meeting times start each day at 1440 hrs. and run until 1630 hrs. All meetings will be held in the Performance Area unless otherwise arranged with the teacher. See you all then!

Music Student-Teacher A big welcome to Ellen Wightman who joins us from the Chicago area as a trainee teacher! Ellen will work primarily with our Secondary students here at school for the next six weeks. Ellen will be graduating from Taylor University in Indiana this December. Elle’s musical strengths lie with her singing, playing of the violin and piano. Please do give her a warm welcome if you happen to see her working with our students on campus. Regards, Carl W. Love, Head of Secondary ( [email protected] )

M1 Studying Earth Structure This week M1 wrapped up a unit on the Earth’s structure with a visit from ISMAC parent and scientist Trish Terhell. To enrich students’ front page newspaper reports on the fictitious eruptions of local mountains, Trish briefed us on the types of volcanoes Mount Meru, Kilimanjaro and Ol Doin yo Lengai are and the plate tectonics of the Rift Valley that are the reason these volcanoes exist. Part of the session was spent in the EC sandpit building models of volcanoes at different stages of their development. We really appreciate the imaginative and multi-sensory approach Trish takes when visiting our Humanities class. Earlier this semester she came in to help us understand plate tectonics and had us involved in a charades miming the movement of convergent, divergent, subductive and transform plates. We look forward to more memorable learning experiences with Trish. MYP Minute The Personal Project has a long standing tradition of excellence on our campus. The Personal Project provides students with a unique opportunity to consolidate their learning in pursuing the concepts and skills that interest them most. Our M5 class is presently in the final stages of their projects and the M4 class is counting down the days until they are introduced to the task. You are welcome to learn more about the Personal Project on our Moodle page at http://moodle.ismac.ac.tz and below are the key Personal Project dates for the upcoming months:

Wed Nov 21 –M5 introduction to the Project Report Tue Dec 11 – M4 introduction to the Personal Project Wed Dec 12 – M5 Personal Project Presentations Wed Jan 30 – due date: final day for DRAFT of M5 Project Report to supervisors Wed Feb 13 – due date: Personal Project to supervisors

Warm Regards, Andrew VanderMeulen ( [email protected] )

OP Mandara Hut Good luck and ‘Safari Njema’ to our 15 M1 students going on the OP Mandara Hut trip this weekend led by Ms. Laura Greenwood and Ms. Faraja Laizer. We hope everyone enjoys themselves and contributes to a great experience overall! Coaching Clinic Our students had a special opportunity this week on Friday afterschool. A free clinic was put on for those that were interested to learn from coaches and PE teachers from around the district – all with the focus of developing their skills in different athletic events. Students had the opportunity to sign up for two 30 minute sessions and then race in events for the 100m, 400m and relays. Thanks very much to all the coaches and teachers that helped organize this – a very enriching experience not only for ISM students but the other schools in the area as well – it was well attended! Athletics Carnival Our annual Athletics Carnival is being hosted here on Arusha Campus Saturday November 10th. We expect that at least 5 schools from the area will come to represent their athletic prowess and skill! It has taken a great deal of coordination and patience for our P.E. department to organize this event and we appreciate their hard work. We do hope that parents and community members alike will come out next Saturday to support this event. More information can be had by emailing Mr. Hooke.

U.S. College Visit On Monday the 29th of October, approximately 70 students from various schools around our area came to see the presentation made by three prestigious U.S. universities. Tufts University from Boston, NorthWestern University from the Chicago area and Duke University from North Carolina all came to do a collaborative presentation on university/college applications and ‘best tips’ for students that might be interested. We certainly appreciate these schools coming to visit and present at our campus. Our students were well-served by the information they presented. Further, there will be a few more presentations by universities and colleges over the next month that certain Arusha families might be interested in. Monday, 5th November: The University of British Columbia, Canada, will be making a presentation at Moshi campus to diploma students at 2:30pm. In addition there will be a university presentation in Dar es Salaam to which you are invited, if interested: Tuesday, 6th November: A group of US and Canadian universities (who unfortunately are not also travelling to Arusha or Moshi) will present at the Golden Tulip Hotel at 2pm.

CCAs A reminder - CCA activities continue on until Wednesday December 5th.

Our ‘Props and Drops’ CCA – we couldn’t do the production without them!
