AN ENHANCED SHOPPING EXPERIENCE AND INDIVIDUAL, FRIENDLY ADVICE AT THE POS

A survey of about 5,000 retailers and customers in Germany, France, Italy and Great Britain con-ducted in December 2014 revealed that custo-mers expect retailers to expand their use of state-of-the-art technology in the store. With sales volumes in e-commerce and online trade on the rise, retailers are under growing pressure to culti-vate the shopping experience of their customers and improve the friendliness and know-how of their staff. However, this aspect is particularly crucial for the reputation of a brand or a com-pany. About two thirds of the customers surveyed argued that the introduction of state-of-the-art POS technologies such as virtual shopping worlds, mobile payment systems or bring your own device (BYOD) increases customer accep-tance of stores.

QUEUES PUT OFF CUSTOMERS – SPEEDY CUSTO-MER SERVICE AT THE CHECKOUT IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY IMPORTANT.

The study also shows that, no matter how modern and well-equipped the retailer, queues at the checkouts lead to a substantial loss of sales. About 29 percent of the respondents stated that they have left a shop at least once due to long queues – even though they had already found what they were looking for. A quarter of the sur-veyed customers stated that they do not even enter the store when they see long queues. More than 90 percent of the respondents consider speedy service at the checkout and simple pay-ment systems the most important services of a retailer. When asked what customer-friendly pay-ment systems might look like, about half of the persons interviewed gave preference to mobile payment methods, such as payment via smart-

phone or tablet PC. More than three quarters (77 percent) even consider the offer of such state-of-the-art systems decisive for the positive image of a trademark in the market. 71 percent of the customers view a speedy checkout process and the avoidance of queues as a primary benefit.
