Update

F.O.P. Newsletter, Winter 2016, V. 30, No 1

From the President

Greetings. This has not been the winter that all of us cross-country skiers and snow shoe users had hoped for. Let us keep our

fingers crossed and do a snow dance. It has been a good winter for hiking with micro-spikes and crampons. There is such beauty

and solace in the frozen woods. Ice formations in the streams are my personal favorites. I hope you can all get out and safely enjoy

Pisgah’s wonders.

I would like to welcome 2 new council members. We expect Laura Kolodziej and Jack Kondos (long time helper with our trails) to

be a great help to the Council.

Please note the form on page 7 for the Second Pisgah Run/Walk in the Park, set for May 14, 2016. Runners will travel over

old jeep roads and single-track trails through a northwest portion of Pisgah State Park. The scenic courses will have water stops,

one on the 5K and two on the 10K. We had a great response for our First event in 2014 and hope you will participate in and enjoy

this next event.

Matt Edson

Who are the Friends of Pisgah, Inc.?

The FOP is a group of volunteers organized to assist the State of New Hampshire Division of Parks and Recreation in the

planning, operation and maintenance of Pisgah State Park, so that the lands are preserved in a natural condition and conserved in

accordance with an approved management plan. Since their incorporation some 30 years ago, The Friends have been critically

involved in the development and maintenance of the Park's trail system and have extensively documented the history of the area.

All are welcome to join the Friends. Members receive periodic mailings throughout the year to keep them informed about meetings

and upcoming events such as hikes, volunteer work projects, picnics and field trips. FOP also built and donated the Visitor Center

in the style of an 1800’s cape as well as arranged for the acquisition of an old barn which was taken down in Westmoreland and re-

erected near the Visitor Center at no cost to the state. There is always something that needs doing at the Park. Why not join the

FOP to help maintain the Park and enjoy the recreational opportunities in the Park. See the last page for application.

Minutes of FOP Annual Meeting November 10, 2015

The FOP gathered at the Community House in Hinsdale on Nov 10 for its Annual Meeting. About 2-dozen members and guests attended.

President Matt Edson called the meeting to order at 7:03 pm. Matt gave about a 10-minute summary of the activities of the FOP, particularly in

trail work, this year.

Council Members in Attendance:

Matt Edson

Jon Knickerbocker

Jim Schofield

Kim Nilsen

John Herrick

Matt Donachie

Beth Phippard

John Hudachek

Abrahm Howe

Laura Susmann

Matt Edson announced that John Summers had indicated he was retiring from the council, and would not be seeking another term. Matt

recommended that we make him an Honorary, non-voting member of the council. Matt recommended, and the group agreed, to thank John for

his many long years of service to the council and the Friends of Pisgah. He has been a fabulous asset to the group, and his extensive service has

been greatly beneficial to keeping Pisgah State Park the great place that it is.

Matt then called on Kim Nilsen, Chair of the Nominating Committee, to present the names of nominees suggested to serve as FOP officers and

At-large positions. All nominees had agreed to serve if elected. The current officers were re-nominated and two nominees were presented for At-

large members of the Council. The committee recommended the following slate of officers to be elected for one year terms: Matt Edson at

President, Kim Nilsen for Vice President, Jim Schofield for Secretary, and John Hudachek for Treasurer. Following this, Kim opened up the

possibility of taking additional nominations from the floor, but no other nominations made. A motion was then made and passed to close the

nomination process. The following members and officers were approved

:

Officers:

President Matt Edson (Hinsdale)

Vice President Kim Nilsen (Spofford)

Treasurer John Hudachek (Chesterfield)

Secretary James Schofield (Keene)

Council Members:

To serve a Three Year Term, expiring in November 2018:

Laura Susmann (Dublin)

Beth Phippard (West Swanzey)

Jack Kondos (Spofford)

To serve a Two Year Term, expiring in November 2017

Laura Kolodziej (Keene),

The Business Meeting was adjourned and Kim Nilsen introduced our speaker Marshall Patmos of Westmoreland. Marshall was well known

to Kim from his service in the North Country for some years and to Whip Newell whose involvement with Marshall was during Marshall’s

service to the state in Cheshire County for many years.

Marshall was a very entertaining speaker and had the audience laughing frequently. He is a retired UNH Extension Forester, a job he held for

38 years. He was the Coos County Forester in Lancaster for 10 years, and then was Cheshire County Forester for the remainder of his career.

Marshall and his wife have been at their tree farm, Farmstead Acres, for over 25 years and have been selling Christmas trees for over 23

years.

As an Extension Forester, Marshall’s job was helping people with the woodland. He’d examine property and make recommendations for how

to best manage the property, whether it was Christmas trees or woodland. Marshall worked with Christmas trees, maple producers, and a

wide array of things and with other agencies too.

Marshall had many anecdotes of his service as a regional state forester. He told us of the time he was shot by a dog!! Hilarious as he was not

fatally wounded but it gave us an idea of the rigors of forester jobs. No slides were used and Marshall did a stand-up performance, which had

many laughing and provoked many questions. The talk lasted about 45 minutes and the attendees stayed around for as much as another hour

with questions for Marshall.

Following Marshall’s talk, Matt Edson thanked everyone for coming, and closed the meeting.

Pisgah Trail Maintenance - December 12, 2015 A bumper crop of 10 volunteers, met on a warm Saturday, December 12th at 10 am at the Kilburn trailhead in Hinsdale. Volunteers were

Kim Nilsen, Jon Knickerbocker, David Weisel, Matt Edson and his ATV, John Herrick and his tractor, Abe and Gabe Howe, Krister Raasoch

and dogs Art and Harry, Doug Favreau and dog Hermes and John Hudachek and Pisgah State Park Manager Whip Newell The goal of the

day was to clear as many culverts and trails as possible. We split into four groups.

David, John Hudachek, Doug and Hermes hiked the Kilburn loop opening all culverts. We also removed all branches and trees from the trail

including three 8"-12" diameter trees that we cut with handsaws. Lunch break was taken on a sunny rock overlooking a pond on the southeast

side of the loop. We returned to the parking lot at 2:20 pm.

John Herrick, his tractor and Whip drove down to the Kilburn loop where they were last seem ditching a pond in the trail.

Matt, Abe and Gabe drove the ATV up the Davis Hill and Hubbard Hill trails returning via Reservoir Trail and Baker Pond trails.

Kim, Jon Knickerbocker,

Krister, Art and Harry drove up to the Horseshoe trailhead where they cleaned culverts and trails.

Thanks to all for a very productive work day!

Trail Maintenance at FOP Dort Propert y- November 14, 2015 On Saturday, November 14th at 10:00 am the Friends of Pisgah met to install a 20 foot 18" diameter culvert near the lean-to they constructed

two years ago on the Friends of Pisgah Dort property in Chesterfield. John Herrick used his tractor to lower the culvert into the ditch he had

dug the previous week. Iva Wood, Art Susmann, Kim Nilsen, Jon Knickerbocker, David Weisel and John Hudachek moved stones around the

ends of the culvert to hold it place while John covered the culvert. We envision this will dry the wet area on the trail to the lean-to that was

always soggy to walk through. After the culvert was installed we hiked to a new vista John has opened that looks north toward Chesterfield

Village. After a lunch behind some rocks to escape the wind we clear a trail from this vista to the trail connecting the lean-to to the Davis Hill

trail.

From the Park Manager

It’s hard to believe that we are already beginning a new year. It would be nice to have a little more snow so more people could

enjoy the Park through winter hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. We are in the process of planning

for spring, summer and fall projects for Park maintenance and improvements throughout the park. We will continue to improve

trail signage and renew efforts to get the trail markers printed and installed. As always, we have work to do both replacing and

repairing bridges. I hope everyone has a prosperous and happy new year!

Animal Tracks and Signs

Fresh snow has come and more will be with us soon. Once again, we may have the thrill of finding animal tracks and signs. Fresh

snow can dramatically reveal the story of animal life quickly and obviously. Snow is not the best medium for studying tracks as it

settles rapidly, melts easily and loses depth and structure. Also, drifting snow obliterates tracks. Mud or moist sand are best - but

with winter upon us, snow will be the most likely source of the excitement that accompanies the discovery of tracks, in the yard or

on the trail. Animal scat and territorial markings are another possible source of education in the natural world. Also, observations

of fur caught on a branch, claw marks on a log, etc., coupled with the tracks and scat, help you to identify the animal that has

crossed your path. It is not always possible to identify an animal from its tracks alone, so don't be discouraged if you cannot

determine what has caused the tracks.

State outdoor agencies may have lists of animals which can be sighted and, perhaps, even a short fact sheet. Several books which

may be of value on this subject are: Murie, Animal Tracks, Peterson Field Guides, Houghton-Mifflin Co. and Miller, Track Finder,

Nature Study Guild, Berkeley, CA. Limited track information may be found in many nature guides, for example in The Audubon

Society Field Guide to North American Mammals. Also for general natural history in winter, I suggest A Guide to Nature in

Winter, Northeast North Central North America, Stokes & Prince, Little Brown and Co. Boston 1076. Also, try your library or

favorite bookstore for background information.
