THE ‘GET BUSY LIVING’ CENTRE WAS INITIALLY A DREAM OF MINE, A PLACE FOR OUR BENEFICIARIES TO COME ALONG TOO AND RECEIVE PHYSICAL REHABILITATION AFTER A CATASTROPHIC INJURY THROUGH SPORT.

REHABILITATION AND EQUIPMENTMuch of the centre’s rehab will be focused on bringing beneficiaries together and allowing them to talk and share experiences about their life changing injuries. This is something that the Foundation has found to be hugely important not only for the individuals but also for their family and friends. Our beneficiaries are our greatest asset and the combined knowledge and experiences they have and the willingness

to share with others makes the Foundation unique. We also want to give our beneficiaries the opportunity to access some of the best rehabilitation equipment that is now available which isn’t ordinarily accessible and we hope to deliver this through our links with two locally based rehabilitation experts Bridge 4 Rehab and Physio function. Both offer a wealth of experience in this field and our beneficiaries are already benefitting from their input. We also hope to kit out our rehab gym with the

latest technology and gym equipment to allow our beneficiaries to reach their full potential post injury.

Some examples of equipment to be housed in the GBL centre:

Since then, our plans for this new facility have evolved and become a reality. It will be a place where our beneficiaries and their families will be able

to share experiences, hopefully be motivated to move on with their lives and make the most out of their situations. The Matt Hampson Foundation is now inundated with requests for help on a daily basis. The ‘Get Busy Living’ Centre will enable us to support all of our beneficiaries and their families, not just physically but more crucially to provide mental support. Our ever increasing number of beneficiaries have become Ambassadors for my

Foundation in turn, and are going out and spreading the positive message of ‘Get Busy Living!’ How I perceive the new Centre working is to have our current beneficiaries become mentors/role models for newly injured individuals and their families. We will provide a useful insight and vital life experiences in to what it is like living with a catastrophic sporting injury; as well as helpful tips for travel, nutrition and equipment etc...The Centre will be a place for

specialist companies to exhibit state-of-the-art equipment and technology. We would like to offer our beneficiaries the chance to sample these without having to endure the astronomical costs of specialist equipment.

The ‘Get Busy Living’ Centre will evolve and take shape once our beneficiaries and their families visit the new facility. One thing I am positive about is that the new Centre will be a crucial part of what ‘Get Busy Living’ means.

In fact, during the 1930’s the Prince of Wales would regularly visit his good friends, Lord and Lady Furness who then lived at Burrough Court, to participate in his love of fox hunting and was often sighted in the area by the locals.Indeed, it was whilst enjoying an evening reception at Burrough Court that he first met his future wife, Wallis Simpson. At the time, Wallis and Lady Furness had a close relationship, both being of American origin, and she had been invited to stay at the house that weekend along with other guests, including the Prince. Today, if you take a slight detour from the main courtyard and stroll along the garden paths, you will find the `Giraffe House’. This building is now a stylish

contemporary office but is aptly named, since in the 1920’s, Lord Furness having developed a deep love for Africa, would visit the country regularly and return home with various animals which included at one time a zebra and giraffe. Even more extraordinary is the fact that the zebra was also regularly ridden in the paddock by Lady Furness.Venturing a little further from this building you will be able to see the remains of the aircraft hangar where Lord Furness used to house his private aeroplane. This aeroplane was regularly used to fly the family abroad and was in fact commissioned by Prime Minister Chamberlain, who was a familiar visitor to the house, to transport him on his historic trip to meet with Adolf Hitler.

ROB DAVIES WINS TABLE TENNIS GOLD AT RIO!Rob beat long time rival Young Dae Joo from Korea 3-1 in the final to claim Paralympic gold for Great Britain. In 2005 Rob suffered a rugby injury similar to Matt Hampson and the Foundation has helped Rob purchase equipment to keep him playing, as well as funding adaptations to his car.Talking about the win, Matt Hampson said “how amazing is it to say we’ve helped support Rob to Paralympic glory? That’s about as busy living as you can get! Well done Rob!”Speaking before the Paralympic games earlier this

year Rob said “Being disabled is expensive as it is, but trying to compete at an international level in sport increases that expense dramatically. You have to pay for traveling, equipment, and competitions, the Foundation really excels at providing support at the grassroots level, and that’s when you need it most. The Foundation paid for my rackets when I was starting off, and it was a huge help to me, they are not cheap. I personally would like to thank Matt, and everyone that helped him create this Foundation and helped fund it. He’s also a top guy, and I respect him so much for what he’s done.”

COLIN LYNCH WINS SILVER AT RIO!Irish Cyclist Colin Lynch won Silver medal in the C2 Cycling Time Trial Road Race!Colin won the Foundation’s second medal of the Paralympic Games, Colin approached the Foundation for support earlier in 2016 as he hoped to improve on his fifth place finish in 2012.

Colin broke his leg playing rugby at 16 and discovered he had a spinal tumour. This led to complications that resulted in his leg being amputated. He was inspired to get involved in cycling after watching the 2008 Paralympic games in Beijing.

We’re delighted to have supported Colin and help him achieve his dream!

SPENCER WATTS’ CHARITY MX WEEKEND AN OVERWHELMING SUCCESS!Over 200 riders competed at Cusses Gorse on the weekend 6th & 7th August, raising money for the Matt Hampson Foundation.

Foundation Beneficiary Spencer Watts organised the weekend of exhilarating Motocross Racing to raise money for the Matt Hampson Foundation after receiving support from the Charity.

Spencer, who was injured 5 years ago taking part in Motocross, organised the event near Salisbury and over

200 riders took part. The event raised over £10,000 for the Foundation and the money raised will go towards aiding someone else in future who has experienced a similar injury to Spencer.

Foundation Chief Executive Tommy Cawston said “I just can’t believe the scale of this event. It’s huge! Spencer is a great guy who we’re happy to support and he’s excelled himself yet again”

Spencer rides a specially adapted MX bike, funded by the Foundation, which has bars to keep his legs in place handlebars. It really has to be seen to be believed!

INTRODUCTIONAs we come to the end of the Foundation’s fifth year it is a good time to reflect on what we have achieved in this time. The charity has become a well-known organisation that is making a huge difference to the lives of both our beneficiaries and their families. In monetary terms we have given out £936,513.82 in grants to well over a hundred individuals who have suffered life altering injuries as well as supporting numerous other charities that we believe in.However as I’ve mentioned in the past what cannot be measured is the support and inspiration passed on by Matt and our beneficiaries to others who have suffered similar life altering injuries in order to allow them to Get Busy Living again. This community and sense of belonging we are creating amongst our beneficiaries and the people who support us makes us I believe a very unique and special charity.

FOUNDATION ACTIVITYOver the past six months the Foundation’s profile has continued to rise and this is reflected in the increased number of requests for help we now receive. This increased awareness and profile has also seen more people fundraising and more companies contacting us wanting to get involved whether to put on events for us or to get involved in some other capacity. People like what we do and like how we go about doing it and this is a real strength of ours and one we must continue to work hard to maintain. A recent full time addition to the team is former Leicester Tigers and England second row Louis Deacon who is our new Commercial Director and is taking a lead role in the Get Busy Living Centre project. Louis is as he was on the pitch, an honest hard working grafter who will never let anyone down.

He cares about the Foundation, is fantastic with our beneficiaries and I’m delighted he is on board as he will be a huge asset for us moving forward.Another former England rugby player who has really stepped up for us this year is our Patron Mike Tindall. Mike is very proactive in his role as patron of the Foundation and we were the beneficiary of his annual golf day at The Belfry in May for which we received £70,000 and a lot of media exposure. I’m delighted to say we are the chosen charity next year and hopefully that will remain the case moving forward. Mike has also opened some doors for us and was the reason Matt, Roy and I were invited to the House of Lords recently to receive a cheque as the chosen charity for the inter parliamentary boat race. Our celebrity ambassadors also recently supported us at the BGC charity day as we were for the 2nd time in 3 years one of the chosen charities. This was a huge honour and again got us lots of national media coverage. The Foundation sent a strong team and we made sure we made an impact especially beneficiary young Seb Goold who was the star of the day!Looking towards the future Matt and I have forged good links with a couple of local physiotherapy companies who we believe we can work with once the centre is up and running.Physio Function are based at the Chris Moody Rehabilitation centre at Moulton College in Northamptonshire. They specialize in assistive technology and together we recently received a £50,000 grant from the Bernard Sunley Foundation to purchase a set of Re-Walk robotic legs which will be used to help in the rehabilitation of our beneficiaries.Bridge for rehab are a Leicester based physiotherapy company who Matt has started using as well as beneficiary George

Robinson, the physios are forward thinking and not afraid to try innovative treatments.

BENEFICIARIESThere are too many to mention individually here but I think there are couple of stand outs which need highlighting. We are delighted that we had two paralympians come away from Rio with medals. Rob Davies won gold in the wheelchair table tennis and Colin Lynch an amputee won silver in his road race in the cycling. Both guys are wonderful examples of getting busy living after a life altering injury and both fully deserve all the recognition they are currently getting.Henry Fraser’s artwork is simply outstanding and this summer he had his second exhibition at The Grove Hotel which was a huge success. I’m delighted that his 2017 Sporting Stars Calendar produced for the Foundation in conjunction with Sainsbury’s has made it into stores nationwide. Finally young Spencer Watts became a father for the second time recently, after being told age 15 he would never conceive naturally. Five years later he is the proud father to two sons! Spencer is a special young man who has given back to the Foundation far more than we have given to him. He has attended events, talked at schools and over the summer put on a motocross event, which raised over £10,000 for the Foundation. He has also been to visit a couple of our beneficiaries from the South West.

FUNDRAISINGWe continue to plan and organise high profile events which are the largest source of revenue for the Foundation and 2017 looks set to be our busiest year yet event wise as we are also the chosen charity at some established events. We have people fundraising for us all the time and in recent weeks we have pledges of support from some big companies such as BGL , Samworth Brothers and as always we are one of the Leicester Tigers chosen charities for the 2016/17 season along with two of our beneficiaries Seb Goold and George Robinson. We intend to really focus on the Parallel London event as this is a fully inclusive race which all our beneficiaries can take part in. Matt is an ambassador of the event and it’s something Matt and I are delighted we are a part of as we have talked about an event like this for many years.

To have an event where people of all abilities can take part in together is something we must really get behind and we plan to do just that in Sept 2017.Matt’s motivational talks continue to be well received both in schools and in the corporate world and we will continue to look for opportunities that allow Matt to share his story and the work of the Foundation.

GET BUSY LIVING CENTREIt has been Matt and the Foundation’s big goal to build the “Get Busy Living Centre”, a place for our beneficiaries to receive rehabilitation and to meet others in a similar position who can pass on advice and inspire each other to move on with their lives. The badgers which have caused us no end of bother have now been re-housed and this has been signed off by Natural England leaving us free to commence the building works. The access road will be completed before Christmas and building will commence of the centre by Spring 2017. Nick Heath Operations Director of Wilmott Dixon has taken it upon himself to really drive the project forward over the past couple of months and things are moving forward. It’s a big project but the goodwill and support shown by so many companies already will allow us to build this centre at the fraction of it’s true cost and this is so important as we must continue to do what the Foundation is set up to do in helping those young people seriously injured through sport who seek our help.SUMMARYThe Foundation continues to go from strength to strength and the next 12-18 months will see us fulfill Matt’s dream by building the Get Busy Living Centre. Over the years we have realized that the key support we can provide is by bringing people together; using their knowledge and the fact everyone’s been through a similar experience. Bringing our beneficiaries and their families together to support each other is so important to help them realize they are not the only one going through this. To have a centre where we can allow them the time and space to listen to and learn from each other on a daily basis will mean the Foundation will be in a position to help so many more individuals in their rehabilitation from life altering injuries and allow them to Get Busy Living again!
