ESMERALDA Task 1.5: Integrating project results into a flexible mapping and assessment methodology
ESMERALDA aims to deliver a ‘flexible methodology’ that can simultaneously provide innovative building blocks for pan-European, national and regional ES mapping and assessment to ensure the timely delivery by all EU member states of Action 5
Based on related ongoing activities (Europe and worldwide), methods for ES mapping and assessment will be reviewed and enhanced
EU-based guidance is needed to harness available approaches Methods flexible enough to be applied in all EU member states (including outermost
regions, marine areas and specific biomes)
How do we achieve this?
The multi-tiered approach considers different methods (biophysical, social, and economic) at different levels of detail and complexity and can be applied according to specific needs, data and resources availability

The methodology helps to find solutions for people who, for example, want to map ES A in ecosystem type B on scale C using a method on tier D
The guidance documents will deliver detailed descriptions of the methods, their application and further background information for ES mapping and assessment
The combination of the components makes existing know-how available to a broad range of people and can be used for mapping and assessing ecosystems and their services

What would be the demands of potential users for such a tool and the guidance documents?
Where can such a tool add value compared to existing tools?
Which design (technical and visually) is suitable regarding for example complexity, query options/entry points to the data base?
How can the tool (and the data base behind it) be maintained (e.g. options for updating, input/output interfaces)? ESMERALDA ICP? ESP? BISE? OPPLA? One Ecosystem?
