Have you ever considered being a part of a “missions trip?” Well here is an opportunity for you to be a part of an exciting and life changing experience that will give you memories that truly will “last a lifetime”. We are in the process of planning a trip to El Salvador in October of this year. I would ask that you seek God and ask Him if He would reveal to you whether this is where you could be of service to Him. Our team would consist of 15 people, so if you feel God tugging at your heart please let someone on the committee know. We will be getting more information out to you as we get a clearer picture of the nature of the project and the immediate needs of this coun- try. The outline we were given indicates a need in construction, medical, feeding programs, dental, sewing and street evangelism. More specific information will be shared with you in the weeks to follow. Kicking off our year we are planning our annual Bikethon and BBQ. This event will again be held at Rotary Park in Ajax on Saturday June 5th. We would love for you to join in the fun of this venture. Unable to ride?.............. How about sponsoring those that are participating. Funds will be put towards the Ministry and Sponsorship for the Missions trip to El Salvador. Our Hoedown, which has always been such a success, is again planned for this fall. Please mark Sept 25th on your calendar. This Continued on next page... Initially we had planned it only for folk in the Port Perry, Uxbridge, Lindsay area. It soon grew and we ended up having folk come from across Durham Region, Keswick, Port Hope, Richmond Hill, Toronto and Newmar- ket. We had been praying for 100 people to attend the conference and we had exactly 100. We are thankful to God for his faithfulness in this. One of our goals was to connect attendees to the various Muslim Ministry work going on in the GTA. We had a good number of people sign up to receive more information from the ministries that they found interesting and to be on their contact lists. This clearly is good for the work in general as interested people generally will translate into willing donors, volunteers and pray-ers. One of the bigger picture things happening across the GTA at present is that there is an effort to establish networks of individuals and organizations who are interested in promot- ing Muslim ministry and prayer. This effort is being spearheaded by CNMM (Canadian Network of Muslim Ministries). We are now in the process of setting up a Durham Net- work, using conference attendees from Durham Region as the core group to get it going. The first meeting is scheduled in Whitby in May. Please contact Rob or Cheryl Cornish (905 982 1434), if you would like to attend. The Missions Committee rounded off the weekend conference with a speaker from 614 Ministries, who gave a wonderful message of the work that is being done in a very Muslim neighborhood in Toronto. God is doing wonderful things amongst Muslims, both here in the GTA and around the world at present. We are thankful that He has involved us in being involved in a modest way right here at EPC Positive feedback for Muslim Ministry Rob Cornish, and friend! is a great opportunity to ask friends and neighbors to a “foot stompin country hoedown”. Yes we Christians “really” know how to dance!! Even if it is line and square dancing. Use this evening to “reach out” and show others that we can have fun in an environ-ment that is fun for both young and old. This year we are planning on bringing back events for our “small fry”, therefore making it a family event.During the summer months Emmanuel’s parking lot will be turned into a “classic car show”. As a committee we will be hosting a BBQ for three Tuesdays during that time. If you would like to help out or be a part of this burger- flipping time of fellowship please come out with the family for a fun evening. In June of 2008 I was part of the Uganda team with my Husband John, Rob and Cheryl Cornish, Sue Mckay and Dave and Bev Snelling/Whealey. This was something that I personally would not have chosen to do, but it was birthed in John’s heart. I was somewhat reluctant to go but felt it was my duty. What I saw and experienced was something that will always remain with me. Those of you who have travelled to a third world country will know what I mean. Seeing the need of a country that was and still is trying to rally from corruption , Aids and severe poverty is enough to make you ask God “Why?” Why in this day and age when we, who have so much and they have so little, how God allows this to go on. And yet their faith and trust in God surpasses many of us Christians here. They depended on God, not on materialistic ‘things’ that they can only dream of possessing. What an example they were for me!

The question is.............Can we afford to give? Better yet, can we afford “not” to give?

I challenge you to get involved and to be a part of something that can change a life... be it yours or some other individual or even that of our church. I would ask you to consider getting involved in the following: Drop in on one of our Missions Meetings held the first Monday of the month, and go from there to see if this is where you could be of service to God. Participate in the Bikethon either by riding or sponsoring a rider. Help out with our “Parking Lot classic car event” BBQs . Last but not least, start thinking about who you could invite to our Fall “Hoedown”.Our congregation has been very supportive in our missions ventures with four trips to Guatemala and one trip to Uganda. We may not all feel “called” to go but we will all someday be held accountable for our time and money that we are to use to “spread the good news”.

1. Why did you choose to volunteer at PHC, and what do you there?A: I had felt God leading me towards PHC for a couple of years, before I even moved to the Oshawa area. Being a mother of two, I felt passionately about helping other women going through crises pregnancies. I wanted to help those women who were doing it by themselves without a partner, under financial strain, while finishing school, with an abusive partner, with a drug problem, or other such issues. I volunteer every Friday from 11-4. The other volunteers and I organize donations that come in: used clothing, baby food, formula, diapers, and baby equipment, and set them out for our clients. Most of our clients don’t have fancy baby showers, so we make up a basket full of items for the new baby and Mom including brand new outfits and sleepers for baby, diapers, wash cloths, towels, a new stuffed toy, blankets, a specially knitted blan-ket, knitted hats and booties, soaps, etc. Also, when a new client comes in, we do what we call an “intake”. We take the client to a private room and take down their contact information and have them share as much of their story as they are comfortable. We want them to know that we care about them and that they can feel comfortable. We also take this opportunity to share the gospel. We give them a Bible if they don’t own one and we tell them about God and Jesus and the sacrifice for our sins, and what that means for us all.2. How has it affected your spiritual growth?A: Volunteering at PHC has definitely helped me to grow in my faith. (The Centre) provides a wonderful way to exemplify God’s amazing grace. We want clients to feel they are special and loved when they come to visit, whether they are coming for supplies or just to talk. It has also inspired me to read more of God’s word. I want to be better prepared for new client intakes and convince them to accept Jesus into their hearts. I want to read more stories of the bible and become more educated to help me to this end.4. What impact has it had on people you meet there?A: The best way to sum it up is by telling you about this young Spanish mother who came in with her 1-year-old daughter. She came in for the first time with a couple of girls who were already client’s of ours, who had told her about us. When I took her upstairs to do her intake I went through the form with her and wrote down all her information. When I told her that everything we provided was free, she was amazed. She could not believe that we gave everything away for free! I explained to her that everything we had at the centre was acquired from donations and she was so very grateful. It really made an impact on her, and I hope it helped her better understand God’s love for her.5. When did you start at PHC?A: Sept. 2009. The Pregnancy Help Centre of Durham has been ministering for the past 15 years with young families in need. This ministry began as a positive response to abortion with the hope that we could share the miracle of life and God’s love with Durham Region. Most of the help to our clients is provided by volunteers like Jacqueline who are called to our ministry. It is our hope that God will touch our clients’ lives through the demonstration of His love and grace through the dedication and service of our volunteers. We appreciate the prayers and support of Emmanuel as we minister.
