� Broad review of available data:– Results show protective effect against IPD and all-cause-pneumonia among

healthy young adults– Lesser degree of protection against IPD in individuals aged >65 years. – HOWEVER: overall data on the efficacy and effectiveness of PPV23 for other

age groups are inconsistent– Failed to demonstrate efficacy against IPD or all-cause pneumonia in

individuals with immunocompromising conditions

� In resource-limited settings, the evidence does not support routine immunization of the elderly and high-risk populations with PPV23; higher priority to infant PCV7

� In low-income countries, WHO recommends the additional use of other measures that help prevent pneumococcal disease

� Need for more efficacious conjugated vaccines or other types of vaccines covering the majority of the pneumococcal serotypes

� Annual global incidence of typhoid fever at 21 million cases, 1–

4% fatal; 90% of these deaths occur in Asia.

� Two new-generation typhoid vaccines: Countries should consider the programmatic use of typhoid vaccines for

controlling endemic disease

– Most countries: vaccination only of high-risk groups and populations

– Decisions whether to initiate programmatic use of typhoid vaccines should be based on local knowledge

• Subpopulations at particular risk

• Age-specific incidence rates

• Sensitivity of the prevailing S. Typhi strains to relevant antimicrobial drugs

• Cost effectiveness

– Outbreak control

� All typhoid fever vaccination programmes should be

implemented in the context of other efforts to control the

disease
