Update on Tuta Infestation in Nepal

(As of April 5, 2017)

iDE Nepal recently conducted an updated assessment of the presence and intensity of the Tuta

infestation in Nepal. The results of that updated assessment can be found in the tables below. The

updated information is as of April 5, 2017. The sources include: iDE project personnel, the Government

of Nepal’s Plant Protection Directorate (PPD), Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC), Agricare

Nepal and KISAN project personnel. A few general and preliminary conclusions can be drawn from this

updated data:

• As expected, the Tuta outbreak is spreading to

areas in which it was not previously detected;

• The intensity of the infestation seems to be

increasing in certain areas, particularly in

warmer areas and at lower elevations;

• Anecdotal information indicates that

pheromone traps may be quite effective in

controlling even an intense infestation;

• At least two farmers in the Pokhara area have

reported that they were able to control an

intense infestation with the use of pheromone

traps;

• The IPM protocols and guidelines for managing

Tuta developed and published by iDE

with extensive input from others appear to continue to be appropriate and applicable.

The above mentioned IPM protocols were developed utilizing the latest international research and

preliminary research conducted in Nepal since the outbreak. The protocols were developed in

coordination with the Department of Agriculture, Plant Protection Directorate, NARC and international

experts.

Please inform iDE if your organization will be utilizing and demonstrating the Tuta IPM solutions. We

have also developed a format for reporting on the performance of the IPM solutions which can be found

at this link

http://idenepal.org/what/Tecnos/IPM_documents/Tuta_docs/Tuta_absoluta_Observation_Parameter_

Sample.pdf).

It is important that good data be collected on the effectiveness of the IPM solutions and on the further

spread and intensity of the outbreak. Please send data to Lalit Sah, IPM Lab Coordinator

([email protected]). We will share the data with PPD/NARC.

Please purchase IPM control technologies (pheromone traps, BT, neem, other products) from the local

supply chain closest to the communities in which you are working. The document in the attached link

provides contact information for Community Business Facilitators (CBFs) based in rural areas that have

been trained by iDE regarding Tuta management and have the needed products available.

(http://idenepal.org/what/Tecnos/IPM_documents/Tuta_docs/ENBAITA_National_Partner_Regionals_a

nd_CBFs_details.pdf)

If there are no CBF's in your community the link also provides contact information for

agrovets/suppliers for the control technologies.

We will continue to update the website as we learn more, and continue to coordinate closely with

PPD/NARC/GON. We will alert people on this list to any significant new developments. If your

organizations has a commitment to promote Tuta IPM solutions we may be able to provide resource

people/trainers for training events.

 Monitoring has been performed using pheromone traps in several parts of the country (35

districts)

 16 districts: Detected the Tuta pest

 Tuta has been detected in 2 terai districts (Banke and Dang) and in 14 middle hill districts
