Moving with the timesIt is over six months since our last newsletter and I know the staff and trustees would join me in saying it has been the most extraordinary time of change.

After launching the new brand and website in October 2012 we quickly moved on to strengthening our fundraising team and recruiting John Munro from Honeypot Children's Charity based in the New Forest, swiftly followed by sorting out accommodation for an expanding staff team in converted farm buildings in Burcombe (behind Manor Farm Meats farm shop) and taking on our first own branded charity shop in Catherine Street!

The charity's trustees took the view that investment at this point in the charity's future is critical. If we are to grow to meet the ever increasing need for hospice services, and of course ever increasing costs, the charity needs to be in a position to meet that need financially. To put this in context the most successful charities in the UK spend money on raising money. And whilst we try very hard to keep costs to a minimum - using Freecycle to source office furniture for our new offices being one example - some investment is needed if we are to compete with national charities who fundraise locally such as Macmillan and Marie Curie. As a yardstick all these charities spend between 30 and 40% of their income on fundraising, against our fundraising expenditure last year of just 5% of generated income.

Topping that the charity successfully led on a bid to the Department of Health for a grant of over half a million pounds to refurbish the hospice buildings. Work will start late summer, early autumn and will include amongst other things adding another patient

room (making a total of 10), making 4 patient rooms en suite, improving facilities for relatives and creating a larger kitchen. Senior Nurse Sarah Hennell and Lead Clinician Dr Helen Kirk are delighted, alongside all the hospice staff, to have the opportunity to improve patient facilities.

We are now planning our biggest event ever, the Wessex Country Fair, which is to be held at Wilton Park and opened by Joanna Lumley. The event takes place on Saturday 7th September and there will be stalls and marquees, events in the main arena, lots to eat and fun activities for both children and adults. We are also running our first Christmas card design competition, children from years 1 to 6 including reception (that’s up to age 11) to submit their designs by the 1st August. This will be the design for our charity Christmas card for 2013. The top 50 entries will be displayed at the fair, where the winning entry will be chosen by a panel of 3 judges including Joanna Lumley. I do hope you can join us.

And finally, a huge thank you to all those donors, fundraisers, supporters and volunteers who have made the last year possible.

Our new shop!

Following on from the success over the last 5 years of the partnership with Dorothy House Hospice in the joint venture The Hospice Shop, the trustees took the decision to open our own shop.

When we went into partnership with Dorothy House some 6 years ago Salisbury Hospice Charity was not in a position to run its own shops, however given recent investment in the charity the position has now changed. It has taken quite a while to find the right premises, both size and location being key, but eventually we were fortunate enough to secure the lease of 15 Catherine Street, 900 square feet of retail premises with plenty of storage above.

We are therefore delighted that Caroline Bennison, who some of you may know as the past manager of East, joined us on the 1st July as our very first shop manager.

The shop opening is planned for Saturday 10th August so all hands are on deck...

I have been looking for an opportunity for some time to give something back, particularly after losing a really close friend and colleague who benefited from the work of the charity, so I am really thrilled to be here. The shop opening is planned for early August so all hands are on deck. We will be looking for volunteers and of course donations! Donations can be left at the shop Monday to Friday and from early August Monday to Saturday. If this doesn’t suit, or you’d like to chat about volunteering, please call me on 01722 416 353 or email me at [email protected]. I look forward to seeing you in our fabulous new shop!

A Great Family Day Out

This year we are launching a brand new fundraising event, The Wessex Country Fair, to be held on Saturday 7th September 10am to 4pm.

The Earl of Pembroke is kindly lending us the use of the gymkhana field, entrance via the Netherhampton Gate.

We are thrilled that Joanna Lumley has agreed to open the Fair, she has also agreed to judge the children’s Christmas card competition alongside a panel of experts (see entry form on page 6).

It will be a fun day out for all the family, there is an exciting programme of attractions in our main arena (an inter-hunt relay show jumping competition – fast and furious! - an exciting dog display team, local hunt parade of hounds, heavy horse carriage driving relays etc), a catering village offering a selection of high quality hot and cold foods and drinks (including a beer tent!), a wide selection of entertainments which will appeal to all age ranges (from bouncy castles to laser clay shooting), static displays of vintage steam machines and equipment, a couple of fun Irish/folk bands to provide a fabulous atmosphere and a large marquee with over 100 stalls plus many additional outside stalls.

Supported by The Salisbury Journal, we hope to raise much-needed funds for Salisbury Hospice. This year we need to raise over £1.5m to ensure vital services are supported. Please come along and join us, tickets bought in advance attract a 10% discount and can be bought online via our website www.wessexcountryfair.co.uk.

Saturday 7th Sept 2013

If you would like to volunteer to help, or indeed take a stall, please call us on 01722 416 353 or email [email protected] or look at our website www.wessexcountryfair.co.uk.

Corporate News

Corporate connections

This year 65 NatWest branches in the south of England have chosen Salisbury Hospice Charity as their charity of the year in memory of a much missed colleague.

A sponsored Santa cycle ride last year raised £5,512, teams of bank staff have been helping get our new charity shop up to scratch (pictured) and many more staff will be running in the Great South Run in October. A big thank you to charity coordinator (and branch manager of Chichester) Chris Purnell and all the NatWest staff who have so enthusiastically supported us this year.

NatWest South - Charity of the Year!

Top supporters James Hay

Long term corporate supporter and local company James Hay have supported us for many years. The staff volunteer with us at a variety of fundraising events, and within the hospice, and since 2005 the company has given the charity nearly £25,000. James Hay Partnership was also our main corporate sponsor for the Midnight Walk this year.

24 hour design challenge!

To mark 5 years since the founding of local design agency Unstuck Design, James, Stuart and Emma took on a challenge to create an original brand and all print and web materials for this year’s Midnight Walk in just 24 hours, working round the clock from 6am Friday morning to 6am Saturday. The result is a fabulous new identity for the Midnight Walk, we love it and hope you do too!

In the chair with John Munro,Fundraising ManagerQ. What made you go into charity fundraising?A. Personal loss. Following the death of my first wife I started volunteering in the charity sector and became very passionate and motivated. I was then offered a position with Cancer Research UK and started my journey in the charity sector.

Q. How long have you worked in fundraising?A. Eleven years. I started in community fundraising with CRUK, then moved to Sue Ryder Care as Regional Development Manager then Honeypot Children’s Charity in the New Forest as Director of Fundraising.

Q. How long have you been with Salisbury Hospice Charity?A. I started working for the charity in February 2013.

Q. What does your role encompass?A. I see my role as pivotal in increasing charity income, building relationships with the local community and managing fundraising staff. I believe it is

crucial that we show the local community how important the hospice charity is, and everyone is aware how much we need to fundraise every year to support vital services.

Q. How have things changed since you started working in charity fundraising?A. The last 4 years have shown us in the charity sector that people are now more critical and informed in their approach to charity giving. Therefore it is up to us in charities to be as open, transparent and honest with existing and potential supporters, continually showing them where and how their money is spent.

Q. What do you find difficult in this job?A. Salisbury Hospice is on the main general hospital site and people feel they are supporting the hospice when they support

the hospital – but that is not the case. Our fabulous community nurses are often mistaken for Macmillan nurses and again people donate to Macmillan believing the money goes to Salisbury Hospice – it doesn’t.

Q. What would you like to see in the future?A. Our level of fundraising income increased to a point where we are able to fund a bigger service.

Q. What is special about Salisbury Hospice Charity?A. The standard of care is first class and the hospice is a very friendly and open place. Everybody I’ve met talks about the hospice with great fondness and the staff are passionate and motivated in their jobs.

Midnight Walk 2013

The route this year was made less challenging and more fun, still including the back-lit Salisbury Cathedral and Cathedral Close but leaving out some of the more challenging hills. The feedback from walkers was that they really enjoyed it and are very much looking forward to next year.

The oldest walker was 82 and the youngest 12 and more than 50 dogs also took part! Kadie Parke, wife of the late Major Mike Parke who died 2 years ago, started the walk for us. Kadie said she was both proud and honoured to start the 5th Midnight Walk and to raise much-needed funds for the hospice. Our top fundraiser was the team from the Bat & Ball pub in Breamore who raised over £1,700. There was also a hospice team (pictured) and staff nurse Carol Elliott raised an amazing £370.

The provisional date for next year’s Midnight Walk is Saturday 17th May. By popular demand we will start the walk at 10.30, walking through midnight as we approach the hospice. We look forward to seeing you all next year!

This year heralded the 5th Salisbury Hospice Charity Midnight Walk in partnership with our media partner the Salisbury Journal. Over 420 walkers took part and so far they have raised over £35,000 with sponsorship monies still coming in.

Thanks to all those who volunteered; including marshals, cooks and

community police and all who helped to make the event such a success.

In the Community

Nurses’ Jumble, January & June. Each year staff nurses Tracey White and Jeannie Grant, hugely supported by hospice staff and the local community, hold two jumble sales at Redlynch Sports & Social Club. This year these two regular events raised an amazing total of £782.13 (£422.13 and £360 respectively). Our thanks to all those who volunteered.

Sale of Sales January 2013Venues for this event have changed over the years;

starting off in a supporter’s house then moving to the Livestock Market then High Post Inn. This year the event was held for the first time at Salisbury Racecourse and was the most successful sale ever. Our thanks to Daphne Woolnough and her volunteers for their support over the years and for raising a grand total of £2,367 this year.

Salisbury Hospice Grand QuizRichard Hilliard (supported by his wife Melinda) and Roddy Gye ran our first Grand Quiz at Salisbury Guildhall in February and raised £4,500. Richard and Roddy are experienced quiz masters and have, amongst other things, run quizzes for two of the big hospice charities in London. Seventeen teams from the community including local businesses Fawcetts, Moore Stephens, Trethowans, Smith & Williams, Chesterton Humberts and Salisbury Journal took part in this first Grand Quiz. The champagne reception was sponsored by Chesterton Humberts.

Winterslow Coffee MorningPat Hunt held her first coffee morning in January 2004 to support victims of the Tsunami; the following year she decided to raise funds for Salisbury Hospice. For the last two years the event has been run in memory of Pat by her husband Graham and this year marked the ninth year supporting the hospice. This year the event raised £693 selling coffee, cakes and a raffle.

Buffaloes raise £2,650Salisbury Provincial Grand Lodge of the Royal Antediluvian Order of the Buffaloes chose Salisbury Hospice Charity as their charity of the year this year and presented a cheque for £2,650, money which they had raised through charitable fundraising over the last year. Our thanks to the Buffs for their support this year.

The Valentine’s Dinner & Dance in Woodfalls was run by Doreen and William Waite, helped by Wendy and Steve Treble, who all wanted to help the hospice, having had recent personal experience of the service. Together they raised a fabulous £1,752.

East Grimstead – charity of the year! We are enormously grateful that this year the residents of East Grimstead have chosen Salisbury Hospice Charity as their charity of the year. The first of a series of events was run by longstanding charity volunteer and East Grimstead resident Jack Maple. The annual East Grimstead Hot Cross Bun morning raised £426.10 - which was then doubled by Barclays Bank bringing the total to £852.20. Subsequently the Village Pig Roast held in June raised a further £446.05. More events are planned in support of the charity including the Village Fete on the 31st August and a summer raffle.

Friends and relatives crowded into Jimmy's Barbers in Milford Street, Salisbury to witness the event and help Imana raise funds for her chosen charities. Jimmy's Barber Shop who hosted the event also generously donated their day's takings in support of Amana.

Garry Pike grew his hair for two years before having it shaved off in March. The hair

was donated to the Little Princess Trust and the £1,320 which he raised in sponsorship came to Salisbury Hospice Charity. Garry also held a raffle, the top prize being who held the shaver!

For the second year Margaret James organised a ‘Zac and the Zeroes’ dance in March at the Michael Herbert Hall, Wilton, raising £450 for Salisbury Hospice.

British 10k

This year 11 runners completed the British 10k in support of Salisbury Hospice. Despite soaring temperatures everyone completed the challenge which started in Piccadilly and ended in Whitehall and included over 25,000 runners. Congratulations to everyone including Salisbury Hospice’s very own Lead Clinician Dr Helen Kirk, occupational therapist Dawn Swatton, shop manager Kathryn Dreyer and database manager Zak Saykouk who all took part, raising vital funds for the hospice.

Sporting events & challenges

Hatch House Garden Party This is the second year that Lady Rumbold has opened her gardens in aid of the hospice. Supported by the Tisbury Group on a sunny Sunday in June the event raised an amazing £8,087 – nearly double what was raised last year. Our thanks and congratulations to Lady Rumbold and all the volunteers from the Tisbury Group who made this possible.

In May, patient Debbie Gray held a coffee morning at the community centre in Bemerton Heath raising £1,000.72.

Hospice Nurses’ Tea PartyNot content with two jumble sales in a year, staff nurses Jeannie Grant and Tracey White held a tea party at The Manor House, Winterbourne Dauntsey and raised £604.80. Teas, cakes and stalls were served and run by volunteers including hospice staff. The owner of The Manor House, Lisa Macmillan, kindly gave guided tours of the house.

Golf day celebrates 7th year!

The Salisbury Hospice Golf Day run by Andy Thomas, alongside his wife Lesley and son Glen, is now in its seventh year. Held at Hamptworth Country Club and Golf Course in June the event had over 50 players and raised over £4,000. The weather was awful but this did not detract from the intrepid golfers’ having a great day and in Andy raising the most ever from this event. Our congratulations and thanks to Andy and his family, see you all next year!

3 marathons Jurassic Coast Challenge

Three ex-servicemen took part in the Jurassic Coast Challenge between Friday 22nd March and Sunday 24th March to raise funds for the charity. The team, Steve Lawrence, Dean Buckley and Iain Cushing, intended to run a marathon a day for 3 days along the Jurassic Coastal Paths – that’s a total of 78.6 miles. Sadly, horrendous conditions – flooding, landslips, torrential rain - meant all had to retire because of injury. However despite the setbacks the team still raised an amazing £1,374.30 and the brave trio plan to take on the challenge again next year.

Donna Marsh ran the Brighton Marathon in April and raised £555.25.

London Marathon

This year we were fortunate that four runners receiving “free” places in the London Marathon chose to run in support of the hospice. Together Tom Prince, Charlotte Evans, Grace Isbister and Dotty Gore-Browne raised £4,141.86. If you win a place in the London Marathon next year and would like to run for us please do call fundraising on 01722 416353.

This April, Chuck Waite took on and completed the Vienna City Marathon and raised £1,320.17.

Sarah Llewellyn ran the Bayer 10k in May and raised £377.

The Beaune Challenge

In March 2013 friends Simon Ellingham, Gervase Evans, Neil Redshaw and David Townend raised £1,150 for the hospice in memory of their friend Di Adam by cycling 500 miles in 3 days. Despite a catalogue of travel mishaps involving ferries, the four friends completed the challenge, we are told without too much sampling of local wares!
