Recommended Minimum Laptop Specifications for Land Surveying Technology

To handle the demands of advanced academic applications, document formats, media, etc., your computer should meet minimum specification levels for features, memory, drive space, and processing

minimum specifications for surveyors. Your computer must be compatible for use with the following software: http://www.carlsonsw.com/support/system-requirement/

Owning Your Own Computer1

Use the specifications below to help you make the best decision if you are purchasing a new laptop. If you already own a laptop you may not need to purchase a new one to meet these specifications. Instead use this information to assess your current system. If your current system doesn't meet these minimum requirements, we suggest that you replace or upgrade.

Computer Systems Available through the Syracuse University Bookstore

Syracuse University (SU) offers computers for purchase by students through the Syracuse University Bookstore, http://bookweb.syr.edu/—computers can be purchased online. The systems described on the SU site meet or exceed the minimum performance specifications of ESF academic programs, and they are very aggressively priced. These same specifications can be used if purchasing computers from other sources.

Regardless of where you purchase your computer, ESF recommends that you carefully consider service arrangements in case you need to have your computer serviced while attending school.

Manufacturer’s warranties also apply. All questions regarding purchases of a computer through SU should be directed to the SU Bookstore, (315) 443-9900, http://bookweb.syr.edu/ Software The Microsoft Office suite of applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, Publisher) is recommended as basic software for academic use. Student Life & Activities:

ACTIVITIES:

Mountain biking, hiking, skiing, snowboarding, skating, fishing, archery*, and canoeing/kayaking.

*All archery equipment MUST be checked in with the Resident Hall Director upon arrival. This equipment CANNOT BE STORED IN YOUR ROOM OR VEHICLE. The Resident Hall Director will keep your equipment secure and it will be available for you to check out, with advanced notice.

CLUBS AND TEAMS: Outing Club, Woodsmen (timber sports), Forestry Club, Hockey Club, and Student Government.

- ICE HOCKEY CLUB: The Ranger School supports a hockey club as one of our student activities. Hockey is an extracurricular sport, and participation is not required of any student. You do not need any experience to play with the club, and beginners are welcome, as well as experienced players. The season usually runs from early October until early March.

Students playing with the club may consider purchasing their own skates. If you purchase skates, be sure to ask for hockey skates, which are quite different from figure skates or speed skates. Please note, boot sizes for hockey skates are smaller than shoe sizes. You can identify a good-quality hockey skate, as it will have brass rivets securing the heel to the boot. Have the skates sharpened. Also, some stores offer to “heat mold” the skates to fit your feet better. Other hockey equipment, including helmets, elbow pads, shin pads, and sticks, are available at the School.

ATTIRE:

Attire (more details):

Professional Clothing; at least 1 outfit for presentations, conferences, and graduation (dress shirt, tie, dress pants, dress/skirt, blouse, shoes, etc.)

Before the winter weather sets in, this can be as early as October, it is also suggested that you bring a heavy jacket, a heavy outer shirt/sweater, two medium or heavy weight shirts, heavy canvas pants (Carhart type is good), several pairs of wool or synthetic socks, and medium weight long underwear and insulated boots. Down jackets are not suitable for field work.

Students are required to wear shirts and long pants to ALL field exercises. Shirts are required to have sleeves that cover the shoulder and extend at least partway down the arm (for example, a short-sleeved t-shirt). Shirts must also be waist length – NO tanks tops, crop tops, spaghetti straps or sleeveless shirts permitted in the field. Pants must be durable and rugged (denim or workpants). NO shorts, ¾ leg pants, spandex, or yoga type pants in the field.
