Leadership Class

This past month the HSS Leadership class has been extremely busy with putting on entertaining events for the students within our school and with volun-teering in our local community. At the moment a group of leadership students are volunteering at the annual Polar Express event that takes place at the Railway Heritage Museum the weekends before Christmas. Also, four of our students are currently working with the Salvation Army to help them raise money for the less fortunate this Christmas.

In November, the leadership students worked fierce-ly to run countless events for the school. A group of three students put on an exceptional Remembrance Day Assembly on November 10. Also, through the school’s leadership program, we got a chance to win our school $500 by recycling old cellphones. On November 12, the leadership class took part in a documentary film screening called “Take a Stand”, a film about B.C.’s threatened coasts . Moreover, stu-dents took part in a BC Hydro Energy Ambassador Program workshop, where they learned how to help our school become more sustainable and greener in the future.

This upcoming month, the leadership class looks forward on planning major Christmas events. A fun packed Christmas week will be organized for the students during the last week of school before Christmas break. Our school’s annual Christmas As-sembly will also be taking place on December 18th, the same day as this year’s Pajama Day!

Athletic Leadership

Athletic Leadership has seen an action packed calendar since the start of school. Our first major event this year was the Terry Fox Run, which went great! Not only was student participation high, but teacher participation as well! The school raised over $400 to donate towards cancer research. Students had lots of fun honouring Ter-ry Fox and keeping his legacy going and raising cancer awareness as a school.

An adventurous trip to We Day took place in October, which was a fun and exciting time for all of us. The at-mosphere was thrilling and very upbeat with energetic guests. The speeches were inspiring and spread a cool and positive vibe that everyone enjoyed.

Some projects we take on at Howe Sound include deliv-ering fruits/vegetables every few weeks to the entire school to promote a healthy lifestyle and how healthy food can be delicious. At Valleycliffe Elementary some of our Athletic Leadership help run the afterschool ac-tivities club which provides young students with lots of activities ranging from athletics to art activities. Taking care of the environment is also a priority Athletic Leadership, so every week we recycle all drink contain-ers and deliver items down to the bottle depot. Monies generated will be allocated to various charitable organi-zations throughout Squamish to assist those in need or provide some funding to support athletics at HSSS.

Recently, our school hosted a basketball officiating clin-ic for all secondary schools in the Sea to Sky district to help students referee and score- keep multiple games throughout the year to support our Junior and Varsity teams. Over the course of the school year, multiple intramurals will be planned and organized by our leadership to offer the student body something to keep them active at lunch time. Currently volleyball is being offered with basket-ball, soccer and badminton to follow.
