Present Situation: This image shows the

It is not a good scene.Isn’t it?

Why this thick smoke? Is there a fire..!!


No.. It is not fire.. The smoke is from the Boilers that are

working hard to provide steam and hot water to the hotel.

But Why it should make this much black smoke?


The picture here shows the boilers in the basement.

Boilers are producing steam and hot water for use in rooms, kitchen and laundry.

Boilers are using diesel for producing steam/hot water.

In a normal case the flue gas exhaust is mixture of carbon di oxide and nitrogen.


But if the combustion is incomplete then the flue gas exhaust will be mixture of soot and carbon monoixde which we see in this case.

This occurs due to fluctuation in the steam demand and occasionally the exhaust will be thick black smoke as we see in earlier.

At present the flue gas from boilers is discharged to the atmosphere WITHOUT any further treatment.

This poses two major problems..


It spoils the exterior walls leaving stains on the façade.


Flue gases are going to stain the new façade that is being provided as part of the current project under construction.

Also it is an environmental concern.


Discharging the smoke is also an environmental issue.

Holiday Inn Property director Mr.Steven Jones has made an observation regarding this in his last visit to bahrain.


How to overcome this problem? We can provide a soot arrestor which

works like a filter and reduce the carbon content in the flue gas exhaust.

Relocate the chimney to a new location that will not an eyesore.

Scope of work briefly, Introduce new stainless steel ducting and

soot arrestor to contain the soot. The soot will be washed away with water

and discharged to a special soak pit. Necessary structural and architectural

modifications will be incorporated.


Picture shows the external façade of the boiler room.

It is proposed to incorporate the soot arrestor in this area and it will be treated architecturally.


Although the soot arrestor will reduce the magnitude of the smoke problem, it is very important to ensure the boilers are well maintained.

With the soot arrestor and proper maintenance of boilers the present problem of smoke emitting from the boiler chimney can be avoided.
