UPGRADING ORACLE APPLICATION 11I
TO E-BUSINESS SUITE R12
Overview of upgrade to R12
Upgrading an application from 11i to R12 involves, upgrading the database side,
upgrading the middleware techstack and upgrading the application side.
Supported upgrade path for application side upgrade is as given below.
In case of database upgrade, you have to upgrade the database to 1gR2 !1.2.".
#ecause application R12 can be used only with 1g database.
Upgrade Process
$ll upgrade functionality has been consolidated into a single uni%ed upgrade driver
that performs the upgrade without reliance on the information formerly captured on
the $utoUpgrade screens.
Rapid Install provides the most up&to&date, certi%ed version of 'racle $pplications
products, along with the certi%ed technology stack components. In an upgrade, it
creates the new %le system for the application !middle" tier components and the new

%le system for the database. $fter the upgrade, you run Rapid Install again to
con%gure servers and start services.
$n upgrade also includes various manual steps, including those that direct you to run
scripts or apply patches. (ou rely on $uto)atch to apply all patches, including the
uni%ed driver that performs the upgrade to Release 12.
Upgrade Steps in brief
*ere are the + simple steps, briey presented below for upgrade. -hese steps are at
very high level of abstraction. e will detailed each steps as we move on further.
1" Understand installed components, system si/ing information, 0S considerations
2" )repare for upgrade using Upgrade anual Script!-US".
3" Upgrading to R12. -his includes upgrading the database and applying the re4uired
patches through $uto)atch.
+" )ost&Upgrade process. 5omplete the upgrade process by applying the latest RU)
patches to keep the system most current.
e wont be considering the functional upgrade task here.
Upgrade steps in detail
1) Understanding installed components
-echnology Stack 5omponents
Rapid Install automatically installs and con%gures the re4uired technology stack
components for both the database tier and the application tier.
-he database tier technology stack for both a new installation and for a system
upgrade is based on 'racle1g Release 2.

EEE e strongly recommend that you back up your entire system before you begin
the upgrade. EEE
8atabase Initiali/ation )arameters
Initiali/ation parameters re4uired at each stage of the upgrade may vary depending
on when you upgrade your database. Review the re4uirements for these parameters
before you begin. Refer to metalink note I8 3DCD.1 for initiali/ation parameters.
5hange the following initiali/ation parameters as speci%ed below for upgrade
process. 'nce the upgrade process completes, reset the parameters back.

change the character set in the $))=-') to one that is not compatible with the
current database character set, the upgraded system will be corrupted.

-he Upgrade anual Script !-US" e@amines your current con%guration and creates
a report that lists upgrade tasks that do not apply to your system. -his report
contains information that is uni4ue to your system con%guration, so its output is
relevant to your individual upgrade. 'mitting the steps listed in the -US report can
signi%cantly reduce upgrade downtime.(ou create the -US report by applying a
Release 11i patch, which loads obGects into your $))S schema that -US uses to
e@amine your $pplications con%guration. (our current $pplications environment is
not aPected.
#elow are the list of steps I am mentioning, which are the re4uired steps. I am
