Description of Guide

This guide contains information and procedures for migrating to MicroStrategy 9.0.

The information covers the upgrade process: preparing a MicroStrategy system for an upgrade, upgrading to MicroStrategy 9.0 from different environments, and performing important post-upgrade tasks.

Before upgrading, review Chapter 1, Impact of the Upgrade and Upgrade Checklist for important information related to the specific version upgrade you intend to perform.

Specifically, this guide provides the following information:

• Chapter 1, Impact of the Upgrade and Upgrade Checklist provides a checklist of the major steps involved in upgrading a MicroStrategy system, upgrade tips, compatibility and interoperability information, and the impact of specific version upgrades.

The sample documents and images in this guide, as well as the procedures, were created with dates that may no longer be available in the Tutorial project. Within this guide, many of the concepts discussed are accompanied by business scenarios or other descriptive examples.

1 From the Windows Start menu, choose Programs, MicroStrategy, then Product Manuals. A Web page opens with a list of available manuals in PDF format.

2 Click the link for the desired manual.

3 The Narrowcast Server SDK Guide must be downloaded. When you select this guide, the File Download dialog box opens. Select Open this file from its current location, and click OK.

If bookmarks are not visible on the left side of an Acrobat (PDF) document, from the View menu click Bookmarks and Page. These steps may vary slightly depending on your version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Online help

MicroStrategy provides several ways to access online help:

The level of support is defined in terms of the components of a MicroStrategy Business Intelligence environment. A MicroStrategy Business Intelligence environment consists of the following components, collectively known as a configuration:

When troubleshooting and researching issues, MicroStrategy Technical Support personnel may make recommendations that require administrative privileges within MicroStrategy, or that assume that the designated Support Liaison has a security level that permits them to fully manipulate the MicroStrategy projects and has access to potentially sensitive project data such as security filter definitions.

Ensure issues are resolved quickly

Before logging a case with MicroStrategy Technical Support, the Support Liaison may follow the steps below to ensure that issues are resolved quickly:

1 Verify that the issue is with MicroStrategy software and not a third party software.

2 Verify that the system is using a currently supported version of MicroStrategy software by checking the Product Support Expiration Schedule at http://www.microstrategy.com/Support/ Expiration.asp.

3 Attempt to reproduce the issue and determine whether it occurs consistently.

4 Minimize the complexity of the system or project object definition to isolate the cause.

11.IMPACT OF THE UPGRADE AND UPGRADE CHECKLIST

Introduction

This chapter provides a checklist for the upgrade process and provides a list of possible impacts of the upgrade, as well as best practices for upgrading to guide you as you upgrade MicroStrategy. It is strongly recommended that you carefully review and follow the upgrade procedure outlined in this chapter.

Impact of the upgradeMicroStrategy 9.0 features significant new products and major architectural extensions to the MicroStrategy Business Intelligence Platform. Therefore, MicroStrategy 9.0 is not interoperable with pre-9.0 releases. In addition, all pre-9.0 MicroStrategy products must be uninstalled prior to upgrading to MicroStrategy 9.0. For more information about the upgrade process, see The upgrade process checklist, page 5.

MicroStrategy 9.0’s expanded features have the following impact on the MicroStrategy

• After installing MicroStrategy 9.0, you have a grace period of 30 calendar days to activate your installation. If you do not complete the activation before the grace period expires, your MicroStrategy product stops functioning until you activate it. For more information about MicroStrategy activation, see the MicroStrategy Installation and Configuration Guide and installation online help. For information about License Manager, see the License Manager online help.

• MicroStrategy Integrity Manager is an automated report comparison tool available with MicroStrategy 9.0, which can aid in upgrading your MicroStrategy environment. Report SQL, report data, and graphs can be executed and compared to help customers verify the upgraded environment. For more information about Integrity Manager, the Managing your Projects chapter in the MicroStrategy System Administration Guide.

• SQL generation is more optimized in MicroStrategy 9.0 than in pre-9.0 versions of MicroStrategy. SQL optimization is controlled by the SQL Global Optimization VLDB property, and determines the level by which SQL queries in reports are improved by combining certain SQL passes and eliminating unnecessary temporary tables.

Because of this change in the SQL generated by reports, MicroStrategy Integrity Manager returns “Not Matched” results for some reports and documents after the metadata update. The reports and documents still return the same results after the upgrade, but the SQL that is generated is different. For more information about SQL

• When a project created in a prior release is opened using MicroStrategy Desktop 9.0, you are prompted to update the metadata to the new version.

• Web customizations can be migrated following best practices for previous MicroStrategy releases (see Upgrading Web customizations, page 14).

• MicroStrategy 9.0 introduces a number of enhancements for MDX cube reporting. These new enhancements, along with other information regarding MDX cubes, are discussed in detail in the new MDX Cube Reporting Guide.

• All of the MicroStrategy widgets that were previously only available on the widgets download website are now included with the MicroStrategy software.

• Support for multi-lingual environments has been greatly expanded, allowing a single project to support multiple languages. For more information, see the Creating a Multi-Lingual Environment chapter of the System Administration Guide.

• The MicroStrategy Cache Administration Utility is not installed or supported in MicroStrategy 9.0 and later versions. MicroStrategy recommends the use of MicroStrategy Command Manager and the MicroStrategy Software Developers Kit (SDK) to perform the functionality previously available with this utility. For more information regarding Command Manager, see the MicroStrategy System Administration Guide. For more information about the MicroStrategy SDK, refer to the MicroStrategy Developer Library.

Using the MicroStrategy Cache Administration Utility if you use pre-9.0 MicroStrategy client products with 9.0 or later MicroStrategy server products is not supported.

• MicroStrategy Control Center is not installed or supported in MicroStrategy 9.0 or later versions. The tools previously contained within MicroStrategy Control Center are still included in MicroStrategy 9.0, and can be found in the following locations:

Service Manager: From the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, then MicroStrategy, then Tools, then choose Service Manager.

DB Query Tool (formerly ODBC Test Tool): From the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, then MicroStrategy, then Tools, then choose DB Query Tool.

License Manager: From the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, then MicroStrategy, then choose License Manager.

Diagnostics and Performance Logging tool: In MicroStrategy Desktop, from the Tools menu, select Diagnostics.

If the Diagnostics menu option does not appear on the Tools menu, it has not yet been enabled. To enable this option, from the Tools menu, select Desktop Preferences. In the Desktop category, in the Advanced Preferences subcategory, select the Show Diagnostics Menu Option check box and click OK.

Configuration Wizard: From the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, then MicroStrategy, then choose Configuration Wizard.

• The MicroStrategy Command Manager command CREATE SCHEDULERELATION has been removed from MicroStrategy 9.0. MicroStrategy Distribution Services, a new component for MicroStrategy 9.0, allows users to create subscriptions that serve the same purpose as the CREATE SCHEDULERELATION command. The command DELETE SCHEDULERELATION still functions as it did in pre-9.0 versions of MicroStrategy.

• MicroStrategy Distribution Services now manages all MicroStrategy subscriptions for History List, Mobile, and cache updates. Existing subscriptions and their supporting objects can easily be migrated to Distribution

services if they were created on the pre-9.0 Narrowcast Server. For more information about migrating your subscriptions, see Migrate web delivery subscriptions from MicroStrategy Narrowcast Server to MicroStrategy Distribution Services, page 38.

• MicroStrategy Portlets are now included with MicroStrategy 9.0. Portlets allow you to integrate MicroStrategy content and functionality into your portal using one of the out-of-the-box MicroStrategy portlets, currently available for BEA WebLogic, IBM WebSphere, Microsoft SharePoint, or SAP Enterprise Portal. MicroStrategy portlets can embed folders, reports, documents, user History Lists, and a search page into the portals through easy-to-configure screens.

• A variety of new privileges have been introduced in MicroStrategy 9.0. In some cases, single privileges in pre-9.0 now require multiple privileges in 9.0. To ensure that your users are granted the correct privileges, MicroStrategy 9.0 has added Find and Replace privileges functionality. For more information, see the MicroStrategy Desktop OLH.

The upgrade process checklistThe upgrade process described in the rest of this guide involves the following high-level steps. To help ensure a successful upgrade, follow these steps in the order they are presented in this guide.

1 Prepare MicroStrategy system and projects for upgrade

Preparing a MicroStrategy system for an upgrade involves reviewing information specific to your version upgrade, pre-upgrade information and prerequisites, checking for supported warehouse data types, backing up the production metadata, understanding how to successfully migrate your customizations, and uninstalling existing MicroStrategy applications.

This is covered in this chapter and Chapter 2, Preparing for the Upgrade.

2 Install and configure Intelligence Server and Desktop 9.0 on a test server

In this step, you install and configure MicroStrategy Intelligence Server 9.0 and MicroStrategy Desktop 9.0 on a test server and then establish a connection to your production metadata.

This is covered in Install and configure MicroStrategy Intelligence Server and Desktop 9.0 on a test server, page 21 in Chapter 3, Upgrading MicroStrategy on Windows, UNIX, or Linux.

3 Update the production metadata

In this step, you update the metadata version of your production projects using the test server environment.

This is covered in Update the production metadata, page 24 in Chapter 3, Upgrading MicroStrategy on Windows, UNIX, or Linux.

4 Perform basic stability testing

In this step, you perform basic testing to ensure the stability and efficiency of Intelligence Server and your updated projects.

This is covered in Perform basic stability testing, page 33 in Chapter 3, Upgrading MicroStrategy on Windows, UNIX, or Linux.

5 Install and configure Intelligence Server 9.0 in the production environment

Once you are satisfied with the status of the Intelligence Server and updated projects in your test environment, you install Intelligence Server in the production environment.

7 Run tests simulating day-to-day system usage

Before implementing your newly configured MicroStrategy 9.0 system, you perform system tests that simulate the kind of day-to-day usage you require. These tests can involve running reports and documents, checking report caches, and monitoring the status of Intelligence Server.

8 Perform post-upgrade tasks

After upgrading to MicroStrategy 9.0, you perform several post-upgrade tasks such as checking system licensing and functionality, managing user privileges, and optimizing your MicroStrategy system.

Upgrade best practicesReview the following recommendations to help ensure the success and stability of your MicroStrategy system and projects after an upgrade to MicroStrategy 9.0.

• Follow the upgrade order and recommendations outlined in this guide.

• Always upgrade MicroStrategy Intelligence Server prior to upgrading client applications such as MicroStrategy Desktop and MicroStrategy Web.

• Do not downgrade products or components on a machine if you have already installed MicroStrategy Desktop 9.0.

• Do not install MicroStrategy 9.0 products on a machine on which pre-9.0 MicroStrategy products reside. If you upgrade a MicroStrategy product on a machine you must upgrade all MicroStrategy products to the same version.

• Avoid installing MicroStrategy products using services such as Windows Terminal Services, which create a virtual session on the host machine. Always install MicroStrategy directly on the server machine’s physical interface, or by using a remote connection tool (such as Microsoft Netmeeting or Virtual Private Network) that takes full control of the server machine’s interface.

Depending on the type of upgrade you are performing, upgrading to MicroStrategy 9.0 can have a significant effect on your current Web customizations. The MicroStrategy SDK is a valuable resource that provides information about customizations and how to upgrade these customizations in your MicroStrategy environment. If you do not currently own a MicroStrategy SDK license, contact your Account Executive.

Reviewing installation prerequisitesThe following sections provide information about installation prerequisites for different platforms.

Installation prerequisites for Windows

Before installing MicroStrategy on a Windows platform, review the corresponding system prerequisites outlined in the Planning Your Installation chapter of the MicroStrategy Installation and Configuration Guide.

Database and driver requirements

Refer to Certified and Supported Configurations in the MicroStrategy General Information Readme for updated information about specific database and driver combinations certified by MicroStrategy.

System sizing guidelines

There are several factors to consider when you initially set up your MicroStrategy system. These factors include the number of users that will access the system, report complexity, and whether or not you should employ caches. You should periodically re-evaluate your system and update it based on actual system performance and use.

Before you begin upgrading any MicroStrategy systems, contact MicroStrategy to obtain a new license key for the version of software you are installing.

Checking for supported data typesMicroStrategy 9.0 supports a wide variety of data types for each supported warehouse database. However, some pre-9.0 projects may contain data types not supported in MicroStrategy 9.0. If a project containing columns with unsupported data types is upgraded, the data types for those columns are assigned as “reserved,” and proper data types are not assigned in temporary tables. This affects report execution.

Before proceeding with the upgrade, you must ensure that all data types assigned in the pre-9.0 project are supported in MicroStrategy 9.0.

Backing up the metadataAlthough the MicroStrategy installation process itself does not affect your project’s metadata, it is recommended that you back up your metadata before any significant installation or upgrade. In most major MicroStrategy upgrades, a metadata update is required for all the pre-existing projects in your metadata. Once you update your metadata project, you cannot revert that metadata to a previous version. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that you perform a full database backup of your original metadata.

It is also strongly recommended that you tape backup, image, or ghost the production server before upgrading.

If you want to keep an old MicroStrategy Tutorial metadata repository and warehouse from a previous MicroStrategy version, rename the Microsoft Access files or move them to another location; otherwise, they are overwritten during the installation process. The Access files are installed by default in the MicroStrategy\Tutorial Reporting folder.

Metadata compatibility

The following applies to upgrading and downgrading metadata and provides information about which metadata versions are supported in MicroStrategy Desktop 9.0.

Updating metadata projects

You can use MicroStrategy Desktop 9.0 to update any metadata project created in a pre-9.0 version of MicroStrategy to the latest version.

Although updating projects through an Intelligence Server connection (3-tier) is supported, it is recommended you upgrade your project using a direct ODBC connection (2-tier connection). Upgrading your project in a 2-tier environment ensures that the metadata update is not interrupted by any issues that may arise in a 3-tier environment.

However, if MicroStrategy Desktop is connected to an Intelligence Server running on a UNIX or Linux platform, you must perform the metadata update in 3-tier mode.

If you do not upgrade the metadata to the 9.0 version, certain 9.0 features will not work as expected. For example, if MicroStrategy Web 9.0 connects to a pre-9.0 metadata through a 9.0 server, Change Journaling, Distribution Services, and some Report Services enhancements will not be available.

Downgrading metadata projects

Downgrading a MicroStrategy Desktop project to any pre-9.0 product version is not supported. Once you update the pre-9.0 project, you cannot downgrade to earlier product versions. Therefore, backing up the metadata is an essential step in the upgrade process as it allows you to revert to a backup version of the metadata to obtain pre-update versions of the projects it contains.

Upgrading Web customizationsThe Customization Upgrade Wizard allows to upgrade customizations from an 8.x version of MicroStrategy Web to the current version of MicroStrategy Web. The Customization Upgrade Wizard upgrades your customizations to plug-ins that work with the plug-in architecture (the Plug-in_Architecture.htm file in the default MSDL directory).

It is recommended that you review the information and procedures referenced below to best support an upgrade of your MicroStrategy Web customizations.

Where to find best practices and upgrade considerations

Before using the Web Customization Upgrade Utility to initiate an upgrade to 9.0, you must prepare your new application to be upgraded. The MSDL includes information

which can be helpful when upgrading your MicroStrategy Web customizations (to access the MSDL, see To open the MicroStrategy Developer Library, page 15).

To open the MicroStrategy Developer Library

• From Windows: From the Start menu, select Programs, then MicroStrategy, then SDK, and then Developer Library.

• From UNIX or Linux: Navigate to SDK/docs and open DeveloperLibrary.htm.

Information on MicroStrategy Web customizations is within the Web SDK section of the MSDL. After reviewing this content, you are ready to upgrade your MicroStrategy Web customizations with the Web Customization Upgrade Utility. Refer to the MSDL for more information on using this utility.


33.UPGRADING MICROSTRATEGY ON WINDOWS, UNIX, OR LINUX

Introduction

This chapter provides information about the steps you must take to successfully upgrade your MicroStrategy system in a Windows, UNIX, and Linux environment.

Follow the prerequisite and pre-upgrade information in Chapter 1, Impact of the Upgrade and Upgrade Checklist and Chapter 2, Preparing for the Upgrade before proceeding in this chapter.

Upgrading MicroStrategy on WindowsThis section provides installation and project update procedures to upgrade MicroStrategy to 9.0 in a Windows environment.

While the installation process does not affect your project’s metadata, it is strongly recommended you perform a full database backup of your production metadata in case you later need to restore a copy of your original metadata. Before upgrading to MicroStrategy 9.0, see Backing up the metadata, page 13 in Chapter 2, Preparing for the Upgrade.

If you use clustered Intelligence Servers in MicroStrategy, see Upgrading in a clustered environment, page 47 before proceeding with the upgrade.

Uninstall the previous version of MicroStrategy

MicroStrategy 9.0 features significant new products and major architectural extensions to the MicroStrategy Business Intelligence Platform. Therefore, MicroStrategy 9.0 is not interoperable with pre-9.0 releases. In addition, all pre-9.0 MicroStrategy products must be uninstalled prior to upgrading to MicroStrategy 9.0.

When you begin your upgrade by running the MicroStrategy Installation Wizard (included on the MicroStrategy installation disk, and also available on the MicroStrategy download site), the following dialog box opens:

There are two different ways to uninstall the previous MicroStrategy components from your machine. Selecting Yes generates a batch file that is used to remove the files. Selecting No allows you to remove existing files using Add/Remove Programs.

To uninstall previous MicroStrategy components using the batch file

1 Start the MicroStrategy Installation Wizard.

2 Select Yes in the Question dialog box. The following is displayed in the MicroStrategy Installation Wizard:

3 Note the folder location given. Click OK. The MicroStrategy Installation Wizard closes.

4 Browse to MSTR_UnInst.bat and double-click it.

5 Follow the steps displayed to uninstall the previous version of MicroStrategy.

6 When the uninstallation is complete, reboot your machine before continuing with the upgrade process.

To uninstall previous MicroStrategy components using Add/Remove Programs

The third-party products discussed below are manufactured by vendors independent of MicroStrategy, and the information provided is subject to change. Refer to the appropriate third-party vendor documentation for updated information about Microsoft Windows.

1 Start the MicroStrategy Installation Wizard.

For details about the MicroStrategy Installation Wizard, see the MicroStrategy Installation and Configuration Guide.



2 Select No in the Question dialog box. The following is displayed in the MicroStrategy Installation Wizard:

3 Click OK. The MicroStrategy Installation Wizard closes.

4 From your Start menu, point to Settings, and select Control Panel. The Control Panel opens.

5 Select Add or Remove Programs. The Add or Remove Programs window opens.

6 Select MicroStrategy and click Remove.

7 Follow the on-screen instructions to remove the MicroStrategy components from your computer.

Install and configure MicroStrategy Intelligence Server and Desktop 9.0 on a test server

Once you review the prerequisite and pre-upgrade information in Chapter 2, Preparing for the Upgrade and back up your production metadata projects, install and configure Intelligence Server 9.0 and Desktop 9.0 on a test server. Once the products are installed on a test server, establish a metadata connection to the production metadata. The following sections expand upon these steps.



Install and configure Intelligence Server and Desktop

Follow the detailed procedures in the Installing MicroStrategy on Windows chapter of the MicroStrategy Installation and Configuration Guide to learn how to install and configure MicroStrategy Intelligence Server 9.0 and MicroStrategy Desktop 9.0.

As part of the configuration process, you configure the Intelligence Server, establish a server definition, and create a project source. See the next section for more details.

When you install products using the MicroStrategy Installation Wizard, a Server Activation screen prompts you to activate your installation. Refer to the Managing your licenses chapter System Administration Guide for more information about software activation.

Establish a connection to the production metadata

After the installation, establish a metadata connection between Desktop and the production metadata, which you previously backed up.

To establish a connection to the metadata, create a 2-tier project source that points to the production metadata. To do so, follow the configuration instructions in the MicroStrategy Installation and Configuration Guide.

To avoid the possibility of a timed-out Intelligence Server connection during the metadata update that follows in the next step, create a 2-tier project source.

Once you install and configure MicroStrategy Intelligence Server 9.0 and MicroStrategy Desktop 9.0, return to this guide for instructions and information on the next steps in the upgrade procedure.



Add new tables to the metadata

To enable all of the new functionality in MicroStrategy 9.0, you must create new metadata tables.

This procedure creates metadata tables to support new features available in MicroStrategy 9.0. such as change journaling, internationalization, history list subscriptions, report and document cache, and other features available in MicroStrategy 9.0.

The procedure below uses the Configuration Wizard to create the required metadata tables in a database that is certified with MicroStrategy for production environments. To create the metadata tables in a Microsoft Access database for demonstration purposes, you must run the ncs_cs_db_Access.sql script located in the MicroStrategy Common Files folder.

To add new tables to the metadata

1 From the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, then MicroStrategy, and then select Configuration Wizard. The Configuration Wizard opens. For steps to access the Configuration Wizard in a UNIX or Linux environment, see Adding tables to the metadata on a Unix or Linux machine, page 45.

2 Select Metadata and Statistics Repository Tables and click Next. The Repository Configuration Tasks page opens.

3 Select the Metadata Tables, History List Tables, and Statistics Tables and then click Next. The ODBC Data Source Name for Metadata Tables page opens.

4 From the ODBC Data Source Name drop-down list, select the DSN for the database to store the metadata tables.

5 Type the user name and password for the data source and click Next. The Recreate or Append Metadata Tables page opens.



6 Select the Only append the set of Distribution Services, Metadata Auditing and Internationalization Repository Tables option and click Next.

7 Repeat steps 4-7 for the ODBC Data Source Name for History List Tables and the ODBC Data Source Name for Statistics Tables.

8 Click Finish to proceed with the creation of the metadata tables.

9 Restart the Intelligence Server to apply the changes.

Update the production metadata

After installing MicroStrategy Intelligence Server 9.0 and Desktop 9.0 on a test server, update the metadata version of your production projects by performing the procedure that follows. Make sure to perform a separate metadata update for each project you want to update.

Updating the metadata helps ensure compatibility between your pre-existing reports and documents and the MicroStrategy 9.0 clients. You can also take advantage of new configuration settings exposed through the client applications, functionality, and objects available only with the updated version of metadata.

For example, if MicroStrategy Web 9.0 connects to a pre-9.0 metadata using a 9.0 server, Change Journaling, Distribution Services, and some Report Services enhancements will not be available. Not upgrading your metadata may result in the loss of functionality of certain administrative interfaces, as well.

MicroStrategy does not support connecting 9.0 components to a pre-9.0 metadata.



Prerequisites for updating a MicroStrategy project

Before attempting to update a pre-9.0 project to the latest version, make sure the MicroStrategy system which currently resides on your test server meets the following prerequisites:

• The MicroStrategy system is connected in 2-tier or 3-tier mode.

If 3-tier mode is used, the versions of the Desktop client and Intelligence Server must be identical.

• The project’s metadata version from which you update is older (or the same, in which case Desktop does not prompt for an update) than the version of the product (for example, Desktop and Intelligence Server) that is performing the metadata update. An older version of the product is not able to perform an update on a newer version of metadata.

• The language setting of the client, project, and Intelligence Server are all the same.

• The metadata configuration should be valid, meaning that at least the root folder for the configuration section exists.

• The project to be updated should be valid, meaning that at least the root project folder, schema object, system dimension, and the system function package definition exist.

Metadata update process

There are two different ways to update the metadata. You can either update your metadata the first time you log into a project that has not been updated, or you can update your metadata using the MDUpdateUtil.exe.

One way to update the metadata version of your MicroStrategy projects is through the metadata update prompt you encounter once you log in to a pre-9.0 version project using Desktop 9.0. This prompt appears whenever you log in to a project you have not yet updated. You must perform the following metadata update procedure for each



project used within the MicroStrategy metadata repository. For steps, see To update a project’s metadata when you log in to a project, page 26

While you can only update a project in Desktop when prompted to do so, you can use the MDUpdateUtil.exe tool at any time to update any project’s metadata. This tool is installed by default in the \Common Files\MicroStrategy folder. MDUpdateUtil.exe also allows you to update the Metadata for several projects at once. For steps to use this tool, see Updating the metadata using MDUpdateUtil.exe, page 29

You must add the new metadata tables before you update the metadata. If you attempt to run MDUpdateUtil.exe before you add the tables to the metadata, an error message will be displayed. For steps to add new tables to the metadata, see Add new tables to the metadata, page 23.

If you are using a Microsoft Access database to store your metadata, additional steps beyond these procedures will be required. For details, refer to Tech Note TN4100-900-0001 in the MicroStrategy Knowledge Base.

To update a project’s metadata when you log in to a project

1 From the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, then MicroStrategy, and then select Desktop. MicroStrategy Desktop opens.

2 Using an administrative login ID, log in to the project source currently pointing to the production metadata. It is recommended you log in to a two-tier project source to perform the project’s metadata update.

Only users with administrative privileges are prompted to update the project since these users have the necessary permissions to alter the metadata.

Users without administrative privileges are simply notified that the metadata version and client version do not match and that the metadata should be updated by an

administrator. If this describes your case, contact an administrator who can log in to the project and update the metadata.

If the version of the project is older than the Desktop client, which should be the case if this is the first time you have upgraded to MicroStrategy 9.0, you are prompted to update the metadata. This prompted dialog box is governed by the Warn on connect when the metadata requires an update setting in the Desktop Preferences. It is strongly recommended you update your metadata when prompted and keep this setting enabled unless you choose to use an older metadata version and do not want to be prompted to update in the future. However, if you do not update your project metadata, it may result in loss of functionality and unexpected behavior in MicroStrategy Desktop. Also, your project cannot benefit from the enhancements of the newer metadata version.

3 Log in to a project. A dialog box with update options is displayed.

4 Select from the update options listed below:

• Update Report Services document definitions: Updates Report Services Documents so that they can support the enhanced 9.0 functionality. The Report Services metadata update ensures that graphs in your pre-existing Report Services Documents display correctly in MicroStrategy Desktop 9.0 and MicroStrategy Web 90 and higher. This update does not affect any document layout or formatting of the Report Services Documents.

Depending upon the number of Report Services documents in the project, this update may take a significant amount of time.

• Update report and document schedule requests to History List subscriptions: Updates all schedules that send reports and documents to history lists as subscriptions. These subscriptions are part of the integrated subscription and delivery features in



Intelligence Server 9.0. They provide the same ability to send reports and documents to history lists as the schedules in MicroStrategy pre-9.0.

• MDX Source Objects: Updates the MDX data source objects (MDX Cubes) that were created in earlier versions of MicroStrategy to take advantage of increased performance.

Depending upon the number of MDX Source Objects in the project, this update may take a significant amount of time.

• Report definitions: Updates the report definitions to the most recent version, which reduces the memory usage and storage requirements.

Depending upon the number of reports in your project, this update may take a significant amount of time.

You can also choose to perform any of these update options at a later time using the Project Configuration Editor. For more information about performing these metadata updates after the upgrade, see Updating the metadata after the upgrade, page 58.

5 Click Yes to proceed with the project updates.

6 Depending on the mode in which you upgraded, you may need to start or restart the Intelligence Server:

• If you performed the project metadata update in the recommended two-tier mode, you must restart the Intelligence Server to apply the changes.

• If you performed the project metadata update in three-tier mode, it is not necessary to restart the Intelligence Server. However, in clustered Intelligence Server environments, it is necessary to restart the Intelligence Server because the metadata update does not synchronize every node in the cluster. Restarting the Intelligence Server forces each node in the cluster to reload from the new metadata.



Note the following:

– To view a log of the changes made during the metadata update, you can access the metadata update log. The metadata update log has a “.upd” extension and resides by default in the \MicroStrategy\Desktop folder. The file’s name is generated based on the name of the project being updated and the date and time the updates started.

– While checking for inconsistencies in your metadata is not a required step in the upgrade process, you can perform this check at any time using ScanMD and MDDoctor. For the ScanMD utility and information on using it, see MicroStrategy Technical Note TN5800-7X0-0031. For the MDDoctor utility and information on using it, see MicroStrategy Technical Note TN4100-7XX-0157. Make sure you back up your metadata before running either utility.

Updating the metadata using MDUpdateUtil.exe

Using MDUpdateUtil.exe allows you to update various parts of the metadata for multiple projects at once. It also allows you to make updates to configuration objects.

By updating the configuration, you can update either the system objects and translations, the privileges, or both. By making updates to the metadata for individual projects, you can select different projects and choose whether to update the system objects and translations, subscriptions and schedules, document definitions, report definitions, MDX source related objects, or any combination of these. For more details about these updates, see the procedure below.

To make metadata updates using MDUpdateUtil.exe

1 Browse to C:\Program Files\Common Files\MicroStrategy and select MDUpdateUtil.exe. The MicroStrategy Metadata Update window opens.



2 From the Data Source drop-down menu, select the data source that you wish to upgrade.

3 Depending upon the type of authentication used in your MicroStrategy environment, do one of the following:

• Standard Authentication: enter your MicroStrategy Login and Password.

• NT Authentication: select the Use NT authentication (trusted login) check box.

Click Next. The MicroStrategy Metadata Update window opens, as shown below.

4 Decide which updates you want to make.



To make configuration updates using MDUpdateUtil.exe

5 In the Configuration area of the Metadata Update window, select Configuration.

6 Under Updates, choose either or both of the following updates to make:

• System Objects and translations: Updates the predefined folders, users, user groups and security roles, property sets, links, database management system objects, monitors, devices, transmitters and locales. Also, this updates automatically provides translations for predefined objects such as system folders, pre-configured security roles, and user groups.

If you choose to update the System Objects and translations at the project level, this option will be automatically selected at the configuration level. For steps to make project-level metadata updates using MDUpdateUtil.exe, see To make project updates using MDUpdateUtil.exe, page 31.

• Privileges: In MicroStrategy 9.0, several new privileges were added, so certain user tasks that previously required one privilege may require several. Updating the privileges ensures that users with Administrative privileges have access to the same functionality that they had in previous versions of MicroStrategy.

You can select all of the updates or deselect all of the updates by using the Select All and Deselect All buttons.

To make project updates using MDUpdateUtil.exe

7 Under Project, select the projects that you want to update.

You can select or deselect all of the projects by using the Select All and Deselect All buttons.

8 Under Updates, select what updates you want to apply to the selected projects. You can update the following:

• System Objects and Translations: Updates the predefined folders, property sets, links, functions, function packages, system subtotals, form categories,



system prompts, searches, base graph styles, report autostyles, document autostyles, and report and document templates, as well as the system hierarchy object, and the schema object. Also, this update automatically provides translations for predefined objects such as system folders, pre-configured security roles, and user groups.

• History List, Cache and Mobile Schedules: Makes previous subscriptions viewable in MicroStrategy 9.0.

• Document Definitions: Updates the document definitions to reduce the storage requirements and improve the performance of documents that were created before MicroStrategy 9.0. Updated documents cannot be run in previous versions of MicroStrategy.

Depending upon the number of Report Services documents in the project, this update may take a significant amount of time.


Depending upon the number of MDX source objects in the project, this update may take a significant amount of time.



You can also choose to perform any of these update options at a later time using the Project Configuration Editor. However, you will need to go through this process for each individual project if you use the Configuration Editor to make these updates. For more information about performing these metadata updates after the upgrade, see Updating the metadata after the upgrade, page 58.



You can select or deselect all of the objects by using the Select All and Deselect All buttons.

9 Enter the path to the log file in the Log File Path text box.

10 Click Update. The MicroStrategy Metadata Update window closes, and the Update Process window opens. The Update Progress window displays the current progress of the update.

11 When the update is finished (this may take several minutes), a window opens that says Update completed successfully. Would you like to see the log file? Do one of the following

• To see the log file, click Yes. The log file opens.

• To not see the log file, click No.

12 Close the Update Process window and the MicroStrategy Metadata Update window.

Perform basic stability testing

The test server environment you created in the preceding steps allows you to closely monitor the interaction between Intelligence Server 9.0 and your recently updated production metadata. With Intelligence Server and Desktop upgraded to 9.0 and connected to the updated production metadata, perform some basic testing to ensure the stability and efficiency of Intelligence Server.

During the test, ensure you are satisfied with the status and efficiency of the Intelligence Server. If you require assistance, refer to the MicroStrategy Readme or contact MicroStrategy Technical Support.



Install and configure Intelligence Server 9.0 in the production environment

Once you are completely satisfied with the status of Intelligence Server 9.0 and the updated projects, install the 9.0 Intelligence Servers on the production servers.

For information about clustering Intelligence Servers, see Upgrading an Enterprise Manager environment, page 40.

Install remaining MicroStrategy products in the production environment

Now that the production 9.0 Intelligence Servers are installed, begin upgrading any remaining 9.0 MicroStrategy products to 9.0. Follow the installation procedures provided in the MicroStrategy Installation and Configuration Guide to install these remaining products.

Recommended upgrade order for upgrading separate machines

It is recommended you follow a specific product upgrade sequence when upgrading MicroStrategy 9.0 products across several machines. Following this upgrade sequence helps ensure that MicroStrategy products installed on separate machines are interoperable, that is, they are able to work together when installed on separate machines.

The recommended upgrade sequence is as follows:

1 Metadata, Intelligence Server, and Web If you followed the preceding instructions, your production environment now contains an updated version of the project metadata and Intelligence Servers 9.0. Continue the recommended upgrade order by installing MicroStrategy Web.



Before installing MicroStrategy Web, note your current Web customizations and review the information in Upgrading Web customizations, page 14 to learn how to successfully migrate these customizations.

2 Office, and migrate web delivery subscriptions from Narrowcast Server to Distribution Services

Note the following:

– To connect to MicroStrategy Web Services J2EE, you must have MicroStrategy Office 8.0.2 or higher.

– MicroStrategy Office users may be prompted to upgrade their version of MicroStrategy Office if a newer version exists on the Web Services machine. For more information, see Upgrading MicroStrategy Office automatically through MicroStrategy Web Services, page 35.

3 Desktop, Administrator, and Mobile.

Note the following:

– Before you upgrade your pre-9.0 Enterprise Manager environment, see Upgrading an Enterprise Manager environment, page 40 for important upgrade considerations and procedures.

– Before you upgrade the MicroStrategy Mobile client on the mobile devices, see Upgrading the MicroStrategy Mobile client software, page 36 for important upgrade considerations and procedures.

Upgrading MicroStrategy Office automatically through MicroStrategy Web Services

If you are a MicroStrategy Office user, you may be prompted to upgrade MicroStrategy Office after you log into a MicroStrategy project using the MicroStrategy Office toolbar or menu in Microsoft® Excel, PowerPoint®, or Word.



When you use MicroStrategy Office to log in to a project, your version of MicroStrategy Office is checked to see if it is as recent as the version on the Web Services machine. If the Web Services machine contains a more recent version of MicroStrategy Office, you are asked if you want to upgrade your version of MicroStrategy Office. If you choose to upgrade, MicroStrategy Office launches the MicroStrategy Office installation program on your machine. Follow the steps in the installation wizard to install the latest version of MicroStrategy Office.

If you have Excel workbooks that contain Flash reports generated using Office 8.1.0, an exception may occur the first time the workbook is refreshed and saved. However, once you save the workbook and close Excel, the workbook can be refreshed without exceptions or problems.

If the MicroStrategy Office client is connected to a 9.0 Intelligence Server that is connected to a pre-9.0 metadata, new features such as Change Journaling and Distribution Services will be unavailable.

Upgrading the MicroStrategy Mobile client software

There are two ways to upgrade the MicroStrategy Mobile client. The software can either be installed from a website on each device individually, or it can be installed on all of the devices simultaneously if you have administrator access to your company’s BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

The procedure in High-level steps to upgrade the client software from a website, page 37 describes the basic steps to use files posted from a website to upgrade the MicroStrategy Mobile client. For a more detailed procedure, refer to the section Installing the client from a website in the Administering MicroStrategy Mobile chapter of the MicroStrategy Mobile User guide.



High-level steps to upgrade the client software from a website

1 Change any software configuration from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server assigned to the device to none.

2 Change the existing IT policy on the device to default.

3 Access the webpage that contains the new client files.

4 Confirm that the version of MicroStrategy Mobile that is on the website is the most recent version of the software.

5 Download the files to the device.

If you have administrator access to your company’s BlackBerry Enterprise Server, you can use it to update MicroStrategy Mobile on all mobile devices it connects to. Distributing the client to users by means of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server takes between three and four hours.

Because the BlackBerry Enterprise Server network drive can only contain a single version of each application at a time, the old versions of MicroStrategy Mobile must be deleted and replaced with the new ones. For high-level steps for this process, see High-level steps to upgrade the client on multiple devices simultaneously, page 37.

High-level steps to upgrade the client on multiple devices simultaneously

1 Overwrite the previous .alx and .cod files in the MicroStrategy Mobile folder with the new files.

2 Open a command window and enter, C:\ Program Files\Research In Motion\Apploader



3 In the command line, type loader.exe /reindex, and press Enter. This updates the specification.pkg and PkgDBCache.xml files.

Migrate web delivery subscriptions from MicroStrategy Narrowcast Server to MicroStrategy Distribution Services

MicroStrategy Distribution services replaces MicroStrategy Narrowcast server in MicroStrategy 9.0 as the application that delivers web delivery subscriptions.

To migrate your subscriptions, use the Migrate Subscriptions for Web Deliveries wizard. The Migrate Subscriptions for Web Deliveries wizard can be accessed by selecting Migrate Narrowcast Server Subscriptions for Web Deliveries from the MicroStrategy Tools menu.

When you migrate all information related to Web delivery subscriptions from your existing MicroStrategy Narrowcast Server to Distribution Services, you can select to migrate Narrowcast Server users and their addresses. These users are copied as contacts who will receive the subscriptions in Distribution Services. During the upgrade process, only user addresses are migrated, subscriptions and schedules will not be migrated.

Run tests representing day-to-day usage

It is essential that you fully test your new MicroStrategy system to see how it withstands the kind of typical day-to-day system usage your user community requires.

This simulation allows you to test reports, documents, report caches, the stability of the Intelligence Server, and other functionalities that contribute to the efficiency of your MicroStrategy system.



If the newly upgraded project is currently connected in 2-tier mode, switch to 3-tier mode. To do so, right-click the appropriate project source and select Modify Project Source. Select Server from the Connection mode drop-down menu, type the name of your Intelligence Server in the Server name field, and click OK.

Using a previous version of Desktop with an upgraded version of Intelligence Server: If you did not upgrade MicroStrategy Desktop and are using an earlier version of Desktop to connect to Intelligence Server 9.0, a warning message appears when you try to log in via 3-tier mode. The warning message informs you that you are trying to connect an older client (the older version of Desktop) to a newer server (Intelligence Server 9.0). This warning message is governed by the Warn on connect when server version is newer than client version setting in the Desktop Preferences. If you plan to update MicroStrategy Desktop clients in the near future, keep this setting enabled. If you do not plan to upgrade Desktop, you can disable this setting so you are not prompted by the message in the future. However, keep in mind that using the same versions of clients and servers within the MicroStrategy platform results in more efficient and reliable system performance. While you can, in some cases, connect an older client to a newer Intelligence Server, you cannot benefit from the enhancements a newer client offers. If you have specific questions about updating the clients and servers within your system, contact MicroStrategy Technical Support.

During the test, make sure you are satisfied with the status and efficiency of your MicroStrategy system. If you require assistance, refer to the MicroStrategy Readme or contact MicroStrategy Technical Support.



Upgrading an Enterprise Manager environment

A MicroStrategy Enterprise Manager environment includes statistics tables, Enterprise Manager warehouse, and Enterprise Manager metadata. Each part of this environment needs to be upgraded.

The Enterprise Manager statistics tables and warehouse can be upgraded using one of the two following approaches:

• Complete Upgrade: All of the Intelligence Servers that are monitored by Enterprise Manager, as well as the Enterprise Manager console are upgraded at the same time.

• Phased Upgrade: The Intelligence Servers are upgraded in phases, and 8.x and 9.0 Intelligence Servers must be maintained. MicroStrategy Intelligence Server 9.0 can log statistics to Statistics table s in 8.x and 9.0 formats; Intelligence Server 8.x can only log statistics to statistics tables in 8.x formats.

In this situation, the statistics tables, Enterprise Manager warehouse, and the Enterprise Manager console should only be upgraded after all of the Intelligence Servers are upgraded. Upgrading the Enterprise Manager metadata must be considered separately.

There are three steps for upgrading the statistics tables:

• DDL upgrade: This step is required when upgrading to MicroStrategy 9.0. It involves adding new statistics tables and new columns, and creating indexes to the statistics tables, and is performed using the Enterprise Manager Console.

• DML upgrade: This step is optional, but recommended because it improves the performance of reports executing against the statistics data that was collected before the upgrade. It involves running data manipulation scripts against the statistics tables, which populates the new columns with data that was collected in the 8.x format.

• Upgrade to statistics tables with partitioning: MicroStrategy 9.0 introduced partitioning in the Enterprise Manager statistics table to improve performance. Since it is impossible to create partitions in

a non-partitioned database, you must create statistics tables in a new database, and then copy the data from the upgraded statistics tables created during the DDL upgrade to the new statistics table that you just created.

For detailed steps to upgrade Enterprise Manager, as well as more information about upgrading the statistics tables, see MicroStrategy Tech Note TN6400-900-0001.

If you did not use the Enterprise Manager console to upgrade your Enterprise Manager metadata, you must perform a warehouse catalog refresh to update the new column data types.

When you install a newer version of MicroStrategy Enterprise Manager over your previous version, a dialog box notifies you that the Enterprise Manager project will be overwritten. The message only refers to the files EM_WH.mdb, EM_Proj_MD.mdb and the *.sql files; the MicroStrategy Enterprise Manager warehouse and metadata which reside on your database are not affected by the upgrade. Unless you have modified these files and would like to preserve the changes, select Yes in the dialog box. Also, the statistics database is not affected by the upgrade.

Upgrading MicroStrategy on UNIX and LinuxThis section provides installation and project update procedures to upgrade MicroStrategy Universal products to version 9.0 in a UNIX or Linux environment.

If you suspect licensing or software conflicts are impeding your upgrade of MicroStrategy products, contact MicroStrategy Technical Support.

While the installation process does not affect your project’s metadata, it is strongly recommended you perform a full database backup of your production metadata in case you later need to restore a copy of

your original metadata. Before upgrading to MicroStrategy 9.0, see Backing up the metadata, page 13 in Chapter 2, Preparing for the Upgrade.

If you are upgrading on UNIX or Linux, and are using clustered Intelligence Servers, see Upgrading in a clustered environment, page 47 before proceeding with the upgrade.

Before upgrading to MicroStrategy 9.0, you must uninstall previous MicroStrategy components. You can do this manually, or you can uninstall the components automatically using the batch file that is generated, as described in Uninstall the previous version of MicroStrategy, page 19.

Installing MicroStrategy Universal products on UNIX and Linux

To install MicroStrategy on a UNIX or Linux machine, follow the detailed procedures in the Installing MicroStrategy on UNIX and Linux chapter of the MicroStrategy Installation and Configuration Guide.

When you begin installing a newer version of MicroStrategy on the same machine on which a previous version of MicroStrategy resides, the MicroStrategy Installation Wizard automatically notifies you that a previous version of MicroStrategy is already installed. You are prompted to continue with the upgrade process.

During the installation, the MicroStrategy Installation Wizard prompts you to define the location in which the following MicroStrategy folders are installed:

• Home directory

The default location is /var/opt/MicroStrategy or $HOME/MicroStrategy if you do not have write access to /var/opt/MicroStrategy

Do not install the MicroStrategy configuration files directly to your UNIX or Linux home directory ($HOME). To ensure that the required MicroStrategy permissions can be defined for the MicroStrategy configuration files, you must install these files within a separate directory. For example, the default path of



$HOME/MicroStrategy uses the MicroStrategy directory within $HOME to ensure permissions on these files are defined correctly.

• Install directory

• Log directory

• MicroStrategy Web Universal installation directory

You are prompted for this information only when the MicroStrategy Web Universal option is selected in the Select Components page.

• MicroStrategy SDK installation directory

You are prompted for this information only when the MicroStrategy SDK option is selected in the Select Components page.

You can verify your installation after installing MicroStrategy. To learn how to verify the installation of MicroStrategy, see the Installation procedures on UNIX and Linux chapter of the MicroStrategy Installation and Configuration Guide.

Migrating Intelligence Server from Windows to UNIX or Linux

If you are installing MicroStrategy Intelligence Server Universal on UNIX or Linux, and you previously had Intelligence Server installed on a Windows platform, it is strongly recommended you modify certain system tuning settings. These memory and cache settings govern and optimize the performance of Intelligence Server Universal and MicroStrategy projects in your 64-bit UNIX or Linux environment.

You can configure these memory, cache, and other settings from your newly installed MicroStrategy Desktop. For information on modifying these settings to optimize the performance of your MicroStrategy system in UNIX or Linux, see Migrating Intelligence Server from Windows to UNIX or Linux, page 61.



Supporting fonts for documents, exported reports, and graphs

When Intelligence Server Universal is running on a UNIX or Linux platform, all fonts are converted to the Courier New font for:

• Reports exported to PDF format

• Report Services documents

• Graphs contained in HTML documents

• Graphs displayed in MicroStrategy Web

This occurs because the fonts required by the PDF component are missing from UNIX and Linux machines running Intelligence Server Universal. The missing fonts may include Microsoft True Type fonts.

MicroStrategy does not distribute or license Microsoft fonts, and therefore cannot package Microsoft fonts with Intelligence Server Universal.

To resolve this issue, you must install the font files in the PDFGeneratorFiles folder within the MicroStrategy installation path on the UNIX or Linux machine, as described below.

To copy fonts to your UNIX or Linux machine

1 Log in to your UNIX or Linux machine that hosts Intelligence Server Universal.

2 Install the Microsoft True Type fonts. Refer to the following resources for information on licensing requirements for and installing Microsoft True Type fonts:

3 Copy the font files into the <INSTALL_PATH>/PDFGeneratorFiles directory, where <INSTALL_PATH> is the directory you specified as the MicroStrategy install directory during installation.

4 You must restart the Intelligence Server to update the list of available fonts.

Adding tables to the metadata on a Unix or Linux machine

To enable all of the new functionality in MicroStrategy 9.0, you must create new metadata tables. These tables serve a variety of functions in MicroStrategy, such as acting as a repository for subscription data, or holding translations for various objects.

The procedure below uses the Configuration Wizard to create the required metadata tables in a database that is certified with MicroStrategy for production environments.

To access the MicroStrategy Configuration Wizard in UNIX/Linux

1 You have the following options to access the Configuration Wizard in UNIX/Linux:

• To open the Configuration Wizard interface, perform the following steps:

– From a UNIX/Linux console window, browse to <HOME_PATH>, where <HOME_PATH> is the directory that you specified as the home directory during installation.

– Browse to the folder bin and type ./mstrcfgwiz, and then press ENTER. The Configuration Wizard opens.

• To open the Configuration Wizard in command line mode, perform the following steps:



– From a UNIX/Linux console window, browse to <HOME_PATH>, where <HOME_PATH> is the directory that you specified as the home directory during installation.

– Browse to the folder bin and type ./mstrcfgwiz-editor, then press ENTER. This command opens the command line version of the Configuration Wizard. The command line prompts guide you through the available configuration options. For information on using the Configuration Wizard in command line mode, see the Installation and Configuration Guide.

2 Continue with the procedure described in To add new tables to the metadata, page 23.

Updating the metadata

Whenever an Intelligence Server is upgraded, the metadata should also be updated to match the version of the Intelligence Server. You should update all projects in the metadata at the same time to ensure that new MicroStrategy 9.0 products are not running against old metadata.

If you intend for the project to access an Intelligence Server installed on UNIX or Linux, you must update your project’s metadata in 3-tier mode. From a Windows environment, use MicroStrategy Desktop to connect to your project and perform the metadata update. For detailed procedures outlining the update process, see Update the production metadata, page 24.

To make your upgraded MicroStrategy Web application available, re-deploy the new WAR file on an application server of your choice. For information about deploying MicroStrategy Web Universal on different application servers, refer to the MicroStrategy Installation and Configuration Guide.

After installing and configuring the MicroStrategy Universal products in your production environment, continue the upgrade procedure outlined in the rest of this guide.

Upgrading in a clustered environmentClustering is a configuration strategy that provides uninterrupted access to data, enhanced scalability, and increased performance for users. A cluster is a collection of two or more machines that provide services to a common set of users. Each machine in the cluster is called a node.

MicroStrategy recommends clustering in environments where access to the data warehouse is mission-critical and system performance is of utmost importance. Clustering provides the following benefits:

• Increased resource availability: If one MicroStrategy Intelligence Server in a cluster fails, the other Intelligence Servers in the cluster can pick up the workload. This prevents the loss of valuable time and information in the event of a server failure.

• Strategic resource usage: You can distribute projects across nodes in your preferred configuration. This reduces overhead since not all machines need to be running all projects, and allows you to use your resources flexibly.

• Increased performance: Multiple machines provide greater processing power.

• Greater scalability: As your user base grows and report complexity increases, your resources can grow.

• Simplified management: Clustering simplifies the management of large or rapidly growing systems.

Moreover, clustering enables you to implement the following strategies in your business intelligence environment:

• Failover support

• Load balancing

• Project distribution and project failover

To retain stability in your Intelligence Server cluster while upgrading, you must stop all nodes in the cluster before proceeding with the upgrade. Once you have stopped all of the nodes, continue with the upgrade process described in either Upgrading MicroStrategy on Windows, page 18, or Upgrading MicroStrategy on UNIX and Linux, page 41, depending upon the operating system you use, for each node in the cluster.

Every node in the MicroStrategy cluster must run the same version of MicroStrategy for the cluster to work properly. For more information about clustering Intelligence Servers, see the MicroStrategy System Administration Guide.

Web server clustering

In MicroStrategy 9.0, you can cluster Web servers using third-party clustering software such as Cisco Local Router, Microsoft Windows Load Balancing Service, or Microsoft Network Load Balancing. The advantages of Web server clustering are similar to those of MicroStrategy Intelligence Server clustering, in that clustering provides increased performance, failover support, and workload distribution. Most clustering tools work by using IP distribution based on the incoming IP addresses.

You should become familiar with some of the settings in the Web Administrator page that affect the functionality and security of your clustered web server environment.

Using License Manager to verify licensingAfter upgrading to MicroStrategy 9.0, verify your product licenses to ensure you are in compliance with your licensing agreements with MicroStrategy. You can use License Manager to perform a compliance check of your MicroStrategy system.

Using Service Manager to check Intelligence Server

MicroStrategy Service Manager is a management tool installed with MicroStrategy Intelligence Server that enables you to start and stop Intelligence Server and choose a startup option. You can also use it to check to see if the Intelligence Server is running.

Testing product functionalityThe following sections outline specific features and settings you must check before using your MicroStrategy 9.0 system in a production environment.

MicroStrategy Intelligence Server and MicroStrategy Desktop

After performing the upgrade, verify the following settings and features to ensure that Desktop is configured to your specific needs.

Folder locations

Verify the location of the Cache, History List, HTML Document, and Working Set folders to ensure they are stored in appropriate folders and machines. If you are using a clustered Intelligence Server environment, ensure that the folders storing caches are in fact shared folders. You can modify the Cache and HTML document folder settings in the Project Configuration Editor in MicroStrategy Desktop. The settings for the History List and Working Set folders are located in the Intelligence Server Configuration dialog box.

In MicroStrategy 9.0, it is also possible to store the History List folder in the database. This allows administrators to centrally monitor all History List messages across the system. For more information about storing the History List folder in the database, see the Increasing System Efficiency: Caching chapter in the MicroStrategy System Administration Guide.

Testing your reports in an upgraded environment

After upgrading your system you may want to ensure that the changes involved do not alter any of your report results. MicroStrategy Integrity Manager can execute any or all reports from a project, note whether or not they execute, and allow you to view their results.

Integrity Manager can also execute reports from two different projects and compare their results. Integrity Manager informs you as to what data, SQL, and graph reports are different between the two projects.

The default SQL Global Optimization value has increased from MicroStrategy 8.x to MicroStrategy 9.0. SQL Global Optimization determines the level by which SQL queries in reports are optimized by combining certain SQL passes and eliminating unnecessary temporary tables.

Because of this change, MicroStrategy Integrity Manager returns “Not Matched” results for some reports and documents after the metadata update. The reports and documents return the same results after the upgrade, but the SQL that is generated is different.

If you need to preserve the SQL generated by reports after you upgrade, you can change the SQL Global Optimization VLDB property from the 9.0 default value (4) to the pre-9.0 default value (1). For more information about changing VLDB properties, and about SQL Global Optimization, see Appendix A, SQL Generation and Data Processing: VLDB Properties in the MicroStrategy System Administration Guide.

MicroStrategy Web

Once you have installed MicroStrategy Web 9.0, you need to establish connectivity with MicroStrategy Intelligence Server. You establish connectivity by performing the following steps.

To establish a connection between the Intelligence Server and MicroStrategy Web

1 From the Start menu, select Programs, then MicroStrategy, and then Web Administrator.

2 In the Add a server manually box, enter the appropriate MicroStrategy Intelligence Server name and click Add.

3 Click Save to save the connection properties and click Connect to allow Web to connect to your Intelligence Server.

Once a connection between MicroStrategy Web and the Intelligence Server is established, you can log in to MicroStrategy Web and execute reports and documents.

To open and log in to MicroStrategy Web

1 From the Web Administrator page, click the Return to MicroStrategy Web Home link at the top of the page. The MicroStrategy Web project selection screen opens. From here, you are able to log in to your MicroStrategy projects.

2 To log in to a project, click the icon or the title of the project.

3 At the login screen, type the user name and password you use to access your project and click Login. The MicroStrategy Web home page is displayed.

Make sure to check your Web customizations and refer to Upgrading Web customizations, page 14 in Chapter 2, Preparing for the Upgrade for information on recovering your pre-9.0 customizations.

MicroStrategy administrative tools

After upgrading Command Manager, Enterprise Manager, and Object Manager, perform the following system checks to ensure these products are working properly:

• Verify that the Use Command Manager and Use Object Manager privileges are properly enforced. Only users with these privileges should be able to use the appropriate component of MicroStrategy Administrator.

• Use Object Manager and the Project Merge Wizard to duplicate and merge projects and verify that these tasks are successfully completed.

• If you changed any default settings in the pre-9.0 versions of these products, verify that your customized settings exist in the 9.0 products. If you were using the default MicroStrategy settings, review the default settings in the 9.0 products for any changes and ensure that they are still valid in your environment.

• Run the data load process and verify that the load completes successfully.

• Make sure you can use Enterprise Manager 9.0 to retrieve statistics from the pre-9.0 version of Enterprise Manager.

If you encounter any product-related issues, contact MicroStrategy Technical Support.

Checking and assigning privilegesIt is essential you take the time to assign and make changes to the many user permissions that affect your MicroStrategy system. Review the following for a list of privileges you should manually assign to users after upgrading MicroStrategy.

• Ensure that MicroStrategy Desktop users are granted the the Desktop Analyst privilege ‘Use Desktop.’ If a user does not have this privilege, an error message appears when the user attempts to connect to a specific project.

• Ensure that the Common Privileges privilege ‘Create New Folder’ is granted to any users that need to create folders in MicroStrategy Desktop or MicroStrategy Web.

• Verify the user permissions on folders such as the Public Objects and Schema Objects and make appropriate changes if necessary.

• Certain new features may require you to assign additional privileges to users. Refer to the appropriate product documentation to learn about the specific feature and the MicroStrategy System Administration Guide for details about any associated privileges.

MicroStrategy 9.0 introduced several new privileges, and some user tasks that previously required only one privilege may now require more than one. To ensure that users are given the correct privileges, follow these high-level steps:

• Update Administrative privileges using the Update Privileges functionality in the Project Configuration Editor. For details, see Updating privileges for Administrators.

• Update remaining privileges for all users using the Find and Replace Privileges dialog box. For details, see Updating privileges using the Find and Replace Privileges dialog box.

Updating privileges for Administrators

To ensure that all users in the Administrative privileges have access to the same functionality in MicroStrategy 9.0 as they did pre-9.0, use the Update Privileges functionality in the Project Configuration Editor.

This should be the first update that you make to privileges in your upgraded system. For steps to update the administrative privileges, see the following procedure.

If you updated your privileges when upgrading your metadata using MDUpdateUtil.exe, the following procedure is not necessary. For more information about MDUpdateUtil.exe, see Update the production metadata, page 24.

To update administrative privileges

1 Log in to the project source that contains the project that you want to update the privileges for.

2 Select the project. From the Administration menu, point to Projects, and select Project Configuration. The Project Configuration Editor opens.

3 Expand Project Definition, then Update, and select Privileges.

4 Click Update Privileges. The administrative privileges are updated.

5 Click OK. The Project Configuration Editor closes.

Updating privileges using the Find and Replace Privileges dialog box

To help determine which users have been affected by the changes in privileges in MicroStrategy 9.0, the Find and Replace Privileges dialog box has been added. For steps to access this dialog box, see the following procedure.

To access the Find and Replace Privileges dialog box

1 Log in to MicroStrategy as an administrator.

2 From the Administration menu, point to User Management, and select Find and Replace Privileges. The Find and Replace Privileges dialog box opens, as shown below:

Updating the metadata after the upgradeAfter you have completed the upgrade process, there are certain updates that you may need to perform, depending upon whether or not you made these updates during the upgrade.

You may have updated your documents, schedules (subscriptions), MDX Source Objects, and report definitions. For more information about making these updates during your upgrade process, see Metadata update process, page 25.

These updates include the following:

• Documents: Updates Report Services documents created in earlier versions of MicroStrategy to support the most recent functionality. This update also ensures that graphs in your pre-existing documents display correctly in the upgraded version of MicroStrategy Web and Desktop.

• Translations: Automatically provides translations for system folders, predefined user roles and groups, and other objects that are maintained by the system. Translations are available for all languages that are enabled for metadata internationalization. For more information about internationalization in MicroStrategy, see the System Administration Guide.

• Schedules: Updates the schedules and subscriptions from earlier versions of MicroStrategy so that they are available in the upgraded version. Without this update, schedules that were created before MicroStrategy 9.0 will not be available for use in the most recent version of MicroStrategy.

Depending upon the number of MDX source objects in the project, this update may take a significant amount of time.



All of these updates are done for each individual project using the Project Configuration Editor in MicroStrategy Desktop.

To update the metadata using the Project Configuration editor

1 Log in to the project source that contains the project that you want to make the updates for.

2 Select the project. From the Administration menu, point to Project, then select Project Configuration Editor. The Project Configuration Editor opens.

3 On the left side of the Project Configuration Editor, expand Project Definition, and expand Update. Depending upon the update that you want to make, do one of the following:

• To update Report Services document definitions, select Documents.

• To update translations, select Translations.

• To update subscriptions and schedules, select Schedules.

• To update MDX Source Objects, select MDX Source Objects.

• To update report definitions, select Report Definitions.

4 Click Update

5 Click OK.

6 Repeat steps 3 and 4 for any other updates that you want to perform.

7 Click OK.

8 Restart your Intelligence Server.

Merging pre-existing translations into a single project

In MicroStrategy 9.0, support for a multi-lingual environment has been greatly expanded. Translations can be applied to objects stored in the metadata and information stored in the data warehouse. For a full description of internationalization in MicroStrategy, see the Creating a Multi-Lingual Environment chapter of the System Administration Guide.

Previously, each project could only support a single language. If you implemented a multi-lingual environment, you maintained a duplicate project for each language that you wanted to be available for a project. With MicroStrategy 9.0, it is possible to have a single project that supports multiple languages.

If you implemented a multi-lingual environment pre-9.0, and you want to take full advantage of the improved internationalization functionality introduced in MicroStrategy 9.0, you must merge your pre-existing translated projects into a single project. This process is detailed in the Creating a Multi-Lingual Environment chapter of the System Administration Guide.

Migrating Intelligence Server from Windows to UNIX or Linux

If you are installing MicroStrategy Intelligence Server Universal on UNIX or Linux, and you previously had Intelligence Server installed on a Windows platform, it is strongly recommended that you modify several Intelligence Server and project settings in your newly installed MicroStrategy Desktop. Adjusting these settings allows MicroStrategy Intelligence Server Universal and the rest of the MicroStrategy platform to better utilize your 64-bit UNIX or Linux operating system’s resources. The adjustments also allow your system to better mirror the performance you achieved with your Windows configuration. Your MicroStrategy projects are therefore optimized for MicroStrategy Intelligence Server on UNIX or Linux.

Repeat the steps in the procedure below for every project connected to an Intelligence Server on UNIX or Linux.

For details about the settings discussed in the procedure below, refer to the MicroStrategy Desktop online help.

To modify settings that govern Intelligence Server Universal and project performance

1 In MicroStrategy Desktop, right-click a project connected to an Intelligence Server Universal on UNIX or Linux, and select Project Configuration. The Project Configuration dialog box is displayed.

2 Expand the Caching category, then the Result Caches subcategory, and select Storage. Under Memory Storage, do the following:

• Under Data Sets, adjust the Maximum RAM usage (MBytes) setting so that it is at least double the size you used when Intelligence Server was installed on Windows.

• Under Formatted Documents, adjust the Maximum RAM usage (MBytes) setting so that it is at least double the size you used when Intelligence Server was installed on Windows.

3 Expand the Auxiliary Caches subcategory and select Objects. Under Server, adjust the Object Cache size (MBytes) setting so that it is at least double the size that you used when Intelligence Server was installed on Windows.

4 Expand Elements subcategory. Under Server, adjust the Maximum RAM usage (MBytes) setting so that it is at least double the size that you used when Intelligence Server was installed on Windows.

5 Click OK to close the Project Configuration dialog box.

6 From the Administration menu, select Server, and then Configure MicroStrategy Intelligence Server. The Intelligence Server Configuration dialog box is displayed.

7 Expand the Governing category and select the General subcategory. Adjust the Maximum RAM for Working Set cache setting so that it is at least double the size that you used when Intelligence Server was installed on Windows.

8 Expand the File Generation subcategory under Governing. Adjust only the following settings so that they are at least double the size that you used when Intelligence Server was installed on Windows. For example, if a setting was set to 100 in your previous MicroStrategy Desktop installation, set it to 200.

• Maximum memory consumption for XML files (MB)

• Maximum memory consumption for PDF files (MB)

• Maximum memory consumption for Excel files (MB)

9 Repeat the steps in this procedure for every project connected to an Intelligence Server on UNIX or Linux.
