iLead . . . Inspiring Leaders through Education, Association, and Development
Welcome!
This course catalog contains important information and details regarding leadership-development
and management courses within UPMC’s iLead Program. iLead is an acronym for Inspiring
Leaders through Education, Association, and Development. The iLead banner reflects the core
views of this program: Think. Share. Grow. Lead.
To develop, support, and sustain leadership bench strength at UPMC, the iLead program fosters:
Education (“Think”) through relevant, timely workshops and courses that are both
internally created and externally produced and available through instructor-led and online
means;
Association (“Share”) by fostering collegial discussion, networking, and interaction
among UPMC management staff through a variety of means.
Development (“Grow”) through a learning-sustainability process that (1) holds
management accountable for applying newly acquired leadership knowledge and skills in
their everyday positions and (2) ensures that higher level managers are supportive of the
learning and development process.
And, the outcome of these core components? Strong leadership.
Corporate Learning and Development invites you to review the information contained within this
course catalog. Courses will be available on a rotating basis throughout the year. You will find
the available course calendar for each month on Infonet under Human Resources > Learning and
Development > Leadership Development (iLead). Questions regarding iLead may be sent to
Corporate Learning and Development at [email protected].

Dealing with Difficult People: Bringing Out the Best in Others, Even at Their Worst
To help participants increase their communication flexibility, this session will focus on the three
keys to unlocking successful communication. First, they will consider what motivates people to
behave the way they do. Second, they will explore the communication skills they use
unconsciously with people who get along with them, and then learn how to consciously use those
skills with difficult people. Finally, they will see how to deal with 10 types of behavior that

Get the Most from Your ‘B’ and ‘C’ Players While Developing Your High Performers
This program will focus on strategies and tactics for coaching two key employee groups found in
every organization: the ‘high-potentials’ and the ‘B and C’ players. High potential employees
have different needs than the B and C players on the team. This session will focus on how to
coach, motivate, and develop each individual on the team for maximum effectiveness.
Participants will learn systems and methods to develop high potentials for current and future
success. They will also analyze coaching techniques designed to get the most from B and C
players. Attendees will learn how to apply these concepts to engage and motivate every member
or their team.

executive decision making; how to foster open debate; how to achieve “diversity in counsel,
unity in command”; how to move to closure; overcoming the inability to decide; avoiding
“analysis paralysis” and other pitfalls; how to gain the whole-hearted commitment to act; and
how to address hidden doubts that could undermine your final decision.

Creating and Managing Your Career and Your Brand

world. It’s about gaining clarity on strengths, values, and skills and using this self-awareness to
drive greater value for a career and a company. To achieve these goals, participants learn to
demonstrate their value through everything they do and make an indelible mark on their internal
and external constituencies. They must build a powerful and pervasive reputation among team
members and with everyone whom they interact.

Leaders as Teachers, Coaches, and Mentors
Throughout history, leaders have naturally served as teachers, coaches, and mentors. Yet, in
today’s busy and competitive business world, these same leader-led teaching, coaching, and
mentoring practices are inconsistently implemented. This is a highly interactive program with
numerous opportunities for participants to adapt the content to their work situations.

Strategy Execution: Frameworks and Best Practices
This seminar will introduce participants to best current thinking concerning strategy execution; it
will explore best practices across diverse industries, and, importantly, it will introduce attendees
to diagnostic frameworks that they can apply to “live” business issues. Emphasis will be placed
on three interrelated areas: 1. increasing “execution IQ”; 2. identifying and managing “strategy
accelerators”; and 3. “execution driven leadership practices.”

Getting to the Honest Truth: Improving Leadership, Communication, and Teamwork
One of the top problems in the work world today, is the failure to distinguish what is “noticed”
(the facts of the situation) from what is “imagined” (opinions, thoughts, evaluations,
conclusions). Think of how often people operate and make decisions as if their opinions are fact
rather than exploring the real truth. This misdiagnosis becomes even more exacerbated when
people have different agendas, goals, and backgrounds. This workshop will demonstrate tools
and techniques for improving open, honest communication and provide a forum to practice them.

Corporate Alchemy: Turning Employee Insights into Gold
This seminar will show participants how the best managers and organizations encourage, collect,
and implement large numbers of employee ideas. It will show them the principles involved, the
benefits expected, and the possible pitfalls along the way and how to avoid them. Front-line
ideas are a powerful engine that can help attain performance excellence and generate a
sustainable competitive advantage. The best leading indicator of a unit’s future performance is
the number of implemented ideas it is getting right now.

Based on UPMC’s contractual agreement with DDI, any cancellation for a DDI leadership-
development course must occur 20 business days or more from the date of the scheduled course.
A $200.00 charge will apply to the learner’s cost center for any cancellation occurring for a DDI

If you are unable to attend an IMS session, IMS does not charge you or UPMC.
