NC School of Character Assembly

Union Academy had a memorable school-wide assembly Friday to celebrate receiving the high honor of being named a NC School of Character.

We were honored to have Faye Gore, NC Director of Character Education, as a guest speaker as well as Tim and Maureen Laniak, the founders of UA. Union Academy would not be possible without the dream and will-power of these two very special people. It was due to their desire to start a school where students are taught to become good citizens, lifelong learners, and community volunteers, that Union Academy was created. Also, in attendance were Monroe Mayor Kilgore and Pat Kahle, President of the Union County Chamber of Commerce.

The atmosphere in the gym was electric. Students cheered, danced and celebrated this huge accomplishment. They viewed video clips on the history of UA, " Creating a Dream, Building a Future." The 8th grade chorus performed a character song they wrote, pep band played, 5th graders performed a skit about friendship and we had a friendly grade level cheer competition! We also recognized those who had been with UA since the beginning and serving for fifteen years. “I have attended UA for 15 years and there has never been a day in my life that I am prouder than today of UA,” said UA senior, TJ Tucker.

Union Academy is extremely proud of this distinguished honor! A special thank you to Mrs. Kelly Brun, Character Counselor who was very instrumental in completing the application and seeing it through the process. We Are UA!

Black History Month

February is Black History month and students in Mr. Pertz Civics class studied the impact of the Supreme Court cases Plessy vs. Ferguson and Brown vs. Board on race relations in America this week. Students also watched a film about the Little Rock Nine, the first African American students to be able to attend a previously all white school. Students in his Sports in Society class chose an African American athlete dur-

ing the civil rights era to do a PowerPoint presentation. Some athletes chosen were Jackie Robinson, Jesse Owens, Arthur Ashe, and Muhammad Ali. Students enjoyed learning about prominent sports figures and appreciated the hardships and struggles experienced by these athletes which paved the way for their favorite athletes today.

Character Day!

First grade had their annual Character Day last week. As an assignment, students had to read a fiction book, do a book report, and come to school dressed like a character from their book. The first grade teachers planned a full day of celebration literacy through sharing book reports, writing activities, reading, and even math!

Discovery Place!

Second graders had an exciting time at Discovery Place and saw how science is brought to life through interactive exhibits, explosive experiments and had hands-on fun last Thursday! Students loved exploring the museum! They also got to view an IMAX movie about pandas and space.

2nd graders participated

in making and tying

fleece blankets to donate

to the Ronald McDonald

House for their grade

level community service!

Union Academy Celebrates National School Counseling Week

National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), was celebrated last week to focus public attention on the unique contribution of profes-sional school counselors within U.S. school systems and how students are different as a result of what school counselors do.

We would like to thank our school counselors for being actively engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents; for working in a partnership with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today's world; for focusing on positive ways to enhance students' social/personal, educational and career development; and working with teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves.

A big thank you goes out to our school counselors for all they do!
