The inaugural Wanaka Trail Ride takes place on Sunday 26 April during the Anzac Holiday weekend and is expected to attract enthusiasts from across the South Island.

All proceeds from this fundraising event will be split equally between the Montessori Children’s House Wanaka pre-school and Wanaka Primary School. Parents from both schools formed a partnership last year to pool resources and ensure all money raised from the ride would directly benefit local school children.

The specially designed motorbike trail ride covers Deep Creek, Long Gully and Lindis Peaks Stations between Tarras and Wanaka. In addition to Family, Intermediate and Expert loops and Enduro Challenges, there will also

be a ‘pee wee’ track for junior riders just starting out in the sport.

With places limited, organisers strongly encourage anyone interested in taking part to pre-register before Friday 17 April via the event website www.wanakatrailride.co.nz. Pre-registration also comes at a discounted rate of $45 adults and $65 for families. Volunteers are being sought to help deliver the fundraiser and many parents have already put their hands up - however you don’t have to be linked to the schools to be involved. Get out there, meet a great team of people, share your skills and even learn some new ones.

A LETTER FROM DR LUCY O’HAGAN

Dear Patients of Aspiring Medical Centre,

It is with some sadness that I am writing to let you know that I have sold my medical practice and will no longer be a GP in Wanaka.

I want to thank you, the patients, for your support over the years. I also want to thank the team at Aspiring Medical – they are all truly marvellous and I would trust them with my life!

It has been a real privilege to be a GP in this community for 20 years ….. I have stitched many of you up; put plasters on some; helped others to find a way through complex medical problems; stood alongside births and deaths, marriages and breakups, breakdowns and remarkable recoveries. I have seen a lot of life.

I have learned a lot from all of you : about being human, about how much more complex people’s lives are than they appear on the surface, about bravery and resilience in the face of adversity. My own life is much richer for these experiences.

I know that sometimes I haven’t been right or got it right for you – mostly through miscommunication or misunderstanding. For that I apologise. (And sorry for always keeping you waiting !)

It is hard to go, but I know I leave you in good hands. Drs Jayne Davies, Simon Brebner and Susie Meyer will continue to lead the team with their wealth of experience. They are happy to accept new patients.

We also have three new long term GPs – Dr Fiona MacLean, Dr Mark Edmond and Dr Pip Clearwater. They are all superb doctors with energy and enthusiasm. They are kind and compassionate human beings. I am very proud to leave the practice in such good shape and feel sure that you will find a doctor on the team to suit you. All the information for your follow-up care is in your records. I am also available to the doctors to answer questions if needed.

Meanwhile, I have been accepted into a distance learning course in Narrative Medicine, based out of Boston. I need time to commit to this and also hope to do some writing and teaching and develop some creative projects. I plan to stay based in Wanaka and you may see me on the occasional after hours or weekend shift.

I will miss you all and wish you well as your lives continue to unfold.

Arohanui.

Dr Lucy O’Hagan

A Goodbye and Thanks to Our Dr Lucy -

When Dr Lucy O’Hagan joined Dr Susie Meyer at the fledgling Aspiring Medical Centre in 1995 they were the first women GPs in Wanaka and something of a novelty. They quickly became known as the “lady doctors” and their work provided the building blocks for Aspiring Medical Centre as it is today.

As Lucy moves on to explore new horizons and new projects, we would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the tremendous contribution she has made to the practice she has helped to develop over the last 20 years and the special gifts she brings to patient care.

Lucy trained at Otago Medical School and her post-graduate qualifications include a Diploma in Geriatric Medicine, a Diploma in General Practice and Fellowship of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners. As well as her day-to-day consultations she has provided care for patients at Elmslie House and has been a doctor for the Wanaka Sexual Health Clinic since its inception. She has also been an enthusiastic teacher of the next generation of GPs through the GP training programme.

She has always had a tremendous interest in exploring the human aspects of doctoring and the challenges patients and doctors face in responding to illness in a meaningful way.

Here at the practice we will greatly miss her dedication, her compassion for others, her pursuit of excellence, her creativity, her incisive mind and her lateral thinking …… not to mention her haiku!

We know that she will have many exciting experiences and adventures as she moves into the next phase of her career. Good luck Lucy, and thank you.

23 Cardrona Valley Road, WanakaPhone (03) 443 0725www.aspiringmedical.co.nz

MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE ……..Here at Aspiring Medical Centre we know how important it is for you to make the right choices about your health. This includes choosing a doctor who is the right “fit” for you.

We feel confident that within our team we have a doctor who will be just right for you. All our GPs are experienced professionals and will give you great health care. Each of them has skills or specialisations which will help them meet your individual needs.

If Lucy has been your GP, please get in touch at your convenience and we’ll work with you to select the doctor from our team who will meet your needs. We don’t mind if you take them each for a ‘test run’ to help you make the choice that works best for you !

If you want more information about our doctors then take a look at our website – www.aspiringmedical.co.nz or talk to one of our nurses about your options.
