FISCAL YEAR-END REPORTJuly 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017

UPPER IOWA UNIVERSITY 2017

Changing Lives, One Student at a Time

Andrew J. Wenthe ’12Vice President for External Affairs

Richard AndresBoard of Trustees Chair, Advancement Committee

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, President Bill Duffy, and the faculty and staff of Upper Iowa University (UIU), we are excited to share the 2017 Donor Report as part of the Winter 2018 edition of The Bridge. This report provides an overview of giving to the University during the past fiscal year ending June 30, 2017. We also provide an update on several initiatives and announce a new and exciting way we will recognize donors to UIU.

As evidenced by its inclusion in the recently adopted Destination 2022 Strategic Plan, creating a “Culture of Giving, Service and Engagement” is a priority at UIU. The support of our alumni and friends is critical to our being able to continue to thrive as a University and effect positive change for our students. We know you have many options when considering what causes and organizations to support, and those who continue to make UIU a philanthropic priority humble us.

For this reason, we are proud to recognize within these pages those who support UIU. We are pleased to announce that many of our donor initiatives are taking root and helping us to instill a culture of giving. Our annual Donor Club program set a new record for membership this year. In addition to a 17 percent increase from last year, more than 400 donors achieved Donor Club status. We added to our Heritage Society as new individuals named UIU in their estate planning or documented their intentions to do so. And a first-ever UIU Giving Day was conducted during which we far surpassed our goal of receiving gifts from 160 donors in commemoration of our 160th Anniversary.

These exciting initiatives, in addition to many others, continue to propel UIU forward. The new UIU Loyalty Society will be officially launched later this year and will allow us to recognize those who make giving to UIU an annual tradition. This is a “good habit” we hope more will “take up” through the Loyalty Society!

Please take time to closely review these pages and see how UIU is being transformed by the generosity of the Peacock family. If you are already a donor recognized in this report, thank you, and we hope you continue to provide support. If you have not yet committed to be a UIU donor, we hope you will be inspired and convinced to make it a priority to become one. Your gifts are truly helping us to change lives, one student at a time!

As always, should you have any questions about information provided in the Donor Report, please do not hesitate to contact the Office of Institutional Advancement and Alumni Development. We want to hear your input and suggestions.

Thank you, and go Peacocks!

YOUR GIFTS MAKE A Difference

We continue to be amazed by the number of generous donors who make up our annual Donor Club program. It is our pleasure to recognize and thank more than 400 individuals, businesses and organizations who are committed to showing their support for Upper Iowa University year after year. We are pleased to share that Donor Club participation increased by 17 percent from last year and look forward to continued growth in this program.

Club members may choose to direct their gifts to any UIU charitable cause. A variety of exclusive perks and VIP experiences are offered to members of each of the six clubs as an expression of our gratitude.

It is obvious members are passionate about the growth of Upper Iowa University, and we are proud to showcase this distinguished group. The following page showcases our 2017 Donor Club members.

“As alumni we have the option to play

a very important role in the University’s growth and future.

By giving back to UIU, I am able to help ensure that future Peacocks

have just as great of an experience as I did!”

PHONATHONContributions to the Upper Iowa University Annual Fund lead to extraordinary opportunities for UIU students across the United States. Your gifts, especially unrestricted gifts, create flexibility in the overall budget, as tuition provides only a portion of the actual cost of educating a student. As a result, your contribution to the UIU Annual Fund is changing lives and making a direct impact on student success.

Each year, your commitment and participation speaks volumes! Last year, our Phonathon callers raised more than $64,000 with the generous help of more than 800 donors. Reflect back on your days as a Peacock, and pay it forward so others can learn, grow and benefit from all UIU offers.

To make a gift to the Annual Fund, go to uiu.edu/give or contact Director of Annual Giving Naomi Aziz at 563-425-5966 or [email protected].

Our Phonathon team is dedicated to serving you! Our goal is to verify and update your information so you can remain connected and engaged with Upper Iowa University.

We love to hear about your Peacock experience and all your fondest memories. We’ll also share the latest alumni news, University initiatives, volunteer opportunities and upcoming events in your area.

Lastly, we are honored to play a vital role in University fundraising by securing gifts from generous donors. When you answer our call and support the UIU Annual Fund, you help our team achieve our goal!

“Being a Phonathon caller gives me the pleasure to speak with alumni about their UIU experiences. I enjoy hearing why they chose UIU, activities they were involved in, and classes and professors they will never forget. Not only am I able to make connections with alumni and get to know them on a more personal level, but I’ve also been able to enhance my communication skills.

“Recently, I called an alumnus who remembered my name and even our conversation from the year before. Nights like those are the ones that I enjoy the most. This job has also made me realize how grateful I am to be gaining my education at Upper IowaUniversity. It’simpressivetoseehowthefinancialsupportfrom former Peacocks impacts me and other students right now. I am thankful for their generosity, and I am beyond proud to be a Peacock.”

THANK YOU HERITAGE SOCIETY Members

“Upper Iowa’s off-campus degree program allowed me to pursue my degree as a nontraditional student. The education I received at Upper Iowa had a direct correlation to the success in my career. Through our estate planning, my wife and I have set up an endowed scholarship fund so that future students may take advantage of the many opportunities an education at Upper Iowa affords.”

-Ken Erickson ’83

Distinguished members of the Heritage Society have made a formal commitment to the University acknowledging they have included Upper Iowa in their estate plans or another type of planned gift.

Individuals who desire to include Upper Iowa in their estate plans are encouraged to consult with their financial advisers to draw up necessary documentation. It is beneficial for UIU to be aware of specific intentions so we can ensure the donor’s wishes are carried out.

The Heritage Society is a wonderful way for alumni and friends to ensure their legacies will continue and that generations to come may benefit from their generosity. Members also receive special recognition during Homecoming.

To learn more about planned giving to UIU, please contact Vice President for External Affairs Andrew Wenthe at [email protected] or 563-425-5348.

Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this Heritage Society list. If an error has been made, please contact the Alumni Office at 563-425-5388 so we may resolve any discrepancies.

Upper Iowa University is proud to introduce the UIU Loyalty Society, dedicated to recognizing those who financially support the University year after year.

This strong commitment shown by our alumni and friends demonstrates a true allegiance for UIU’s stability and future growth. As we unveil this society and promote it among our UIU family, we want to make the point clear that what’s important for this program is consecutive years of giving – not the amount of money that is given.

The goal of the UIU Loyalty Society is not only to recognize donors for reaching these milestone years, but also to tell the stories of why their gifts are directed to the University each year. Some say it’s simply a matter of paying it forward; others give in memory of somebody special, hoping to always honor his or her memory.

What will your story of giving be? For inspiration, check out how a few donors with 25+ years of consecutive giving continue to show their dedication by visiting uiu.edu/alumni.

The Class Gift campaign at UIU provides graduates with an opportunity to show support for their alma mater and begin leaving their legacies immediately following graduation. This initiative was developed as a way to encourage students to

embrace a philanthropic spirit.

In 2017, the Class Gift campaign raised $3,899 from a total of 108 donors. The 2018 Class Gift initiative will go toward purchasing stoles that feature the new University logo for graduates to wear during the commencement ceremonies for years to come.
