NEWSLETTER 16/17 June 2018
ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME/B READINGS: Ezekiel 17:22-24; 2 Corinthians 5:6-10
GOSPEL: Mark 4:26-34
Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart Parish
Guided by the Holy Spirit, we aim to be an evangelising, faith-filled parish whose members care for one another and are welcoming and inclusive.
‘What do you think he is talking about?’ The great seasons of Lent and Eastertide are completed and now we return to the cycle of ‘Ordinary Time’ and the sequential reading of Mark’s Gospel. In Mark Chapter 4, the setting is by the Sea of Galilee and Jesus teaches the crowd that gathers, using a number of parables. Our imagination can be helpful here. The crowd that gathers are probably ordinary peasant farmers and so Jesus uses images that they would be familiar with.
4:3-9 Parable of a man sowing his crop
4:21 Parable of the lamp
4:26-29 Parable of the seed growing by itself
4:30-32 Parable of the mustard seed
Parables were often used in the Old Testament as a way of teaching and their value lay in not explaining them, but rather letting the listener be puzzled by them and search for their meaning. Jesus finishes his parables with the words, ‘Those who have ears to hear, let them hear.’ (4:9, 23) You might imagine some in the crowd going away scratching their heads, and talking to each other – ‘What do you think he is talking about?’ Newspapers use a similar technique in some cartoons, which are not just for amusement, but also offer a social or political commentary. Many of Michael Leunig’s reflections are the same – inviting you to think.
The first parable today, about the seed, was so puzzling that Matthew and Luke both omitted it from their gospels. I find myself asking – In what way is the reign of God like a farmer sowing seed? It seems to suggest that there is a period of time when the farmer does nothing and just leaves the seed to its own natural processes. During this time, the seed is underground and the earth produces the growth. How is this like the Kingdom? But then, when the harvest comes, the farmer once again gets very active. Could it be that Mark is suggesting that after the time of the initial sowing the seed of the Gospel, then there is a time when it can appear as if nothing is happening? While the seed is quietly and invisibly germinating following its own timetable?
The parable of the mustard seed is just as puzzling. The mustard seed is tiny, and the bush it produces is also just a small shrub, a few metres high, which grows vigorously and could take over a garden. Jesus’ listeners would be familiar with this shrub, and the way small birds shelter in it. The parable reminds me of an advertisement on the TV: ‘From little things big things grow.’
When considering the parables it is always worth thinking about why Jesus found this a helpful image for his own ministry, both for himself and for his disciples as well as the crowd. Then consider what the parable might mean for the early Christian community of Mark’s gospel. What might be a comparable image for Churches today?

Ant: Glory and praise to our God, who alone gives light to our days.
Many are the blessings he bears to those who trust in his ways.
1. We the daughters and sons of him who built the valleys and plains, praise the wonders our God has done in ev’ry heart that sings. (A)
2. In his wisdom he strengthens us, like gold that’s tested in fire.
Though the power of sin prevails our God is there to save. (A)
3. Ev’ry moment of ev’ry day our God is waiting to save, always
ready to seek the lost, to answer those who pray. (Antiphon) Text: Ps. 66. Text & Music: Schutte, Daniel © 1976 New Dawn Music

O most High, to proclaim your love in the morning and your
truth in the watches of the night. R/
2. The just will flourish like the palm-tree and grow like a Lebanon
cedar. R/
3. Planted in the house of the Lord they will flourish in the courts of
our God, still bearing fruit when they are old, still full of sap, still
green, to proclaim that the Lord is just. In him, my rock, there is
no wrong. R/ Text: Psalm 91, Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1997. Verses © The Grail.

Vine, fruit of the land, wine, work of our hands, one cup that
is shared by all; the living cup, the living bread of God.
1. Is not the bread we break a sharing in our Lord?
Is not the cup we bless the blood of Christ outpoured? (Ref.)
2. The seed which falls on rock will wither and will die. The seed within good ground will flower and have life. (Ref.)

Yet in his promise we rejoice, And cry “My Lord and God!”
3. Help then, O Lord, our unbelief, and may our faith abound;
To call on you when you are near, and seek where you are found: (Repeat Vs. 1)
