The report into the Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements was tabled in parliament on October 28, containing 80 recommendations to improve national safety.Three Commissioners heard evidence from 290 witnesses, more than 2,000 documents, comprising over 50,000 pages, and more than 1,700 submissions, including from Towong Shire Council.Many provided invaluable insights into the lived experience of Australians directly affected by the
Royal Commission releases reportdevastating 2019/2020 bushfires.The inquiry focussed on national natural disaster arrangements involving all levels of government, the private and not-for-profit sectors, communities, families, and individuals and concerned all phases of disaster management: mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.Commission Chair, Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin AC (Retd) said there was an important role for all levels of government in relation to managing natural disasters.
“While state and territory governments have primary responsibility, and accountability, for emergency management, we have concluded that Australia needs a national approach to natural disasters.
