the first practice and, in most cases, they will be welcomed onto the team.

General

Open Art Studio Ms Hallam & Ms Wozny Monday-Thursday @ lunch Art Room Open Art Studio invites Upper School students to the art room at lunch time on Monday through Thursday. Students typically work on projects started in class, although many others bring their Developmental Workbooks to Open Art Studio. They come into the art studio because they enjoy drawing and/ or painting and want to explore techniques, skills and visual ideas. For the digital imagery enthusiasts, there are 6 computers with Photo Shop programs installed. Participation can be counted for creativity hours and students do not need to be enrolled in an art class.

Photography Club Ms Wozny, Mr Wilson & Ms McIntyre Periodic meetings held at lunchtime as needed – First meeting to be announced Room 2026 The photography club takes pictures of Upper School events and student life;

these photos may be used for the yearbook, website, slideshows and other

creative presentations. Students are expected to supply their own camera and,

most importantly, be respectful of the preferences, privacy and dignity of their

subjects. They must view, edit and submit only their best shots. In order to qualify

as a club commitment, students must take photos of a minimum of three events

or student life opportunities per term. This is a great citizenship or creativity

commitment!

Mandarin Club Ms Han Wednesday @ lunch Room C6 (Annex) Play Chinese games such as Chinese Chess, GO and Poker, while listening to Chinese pop music and making new friends. Have fun practicing your Mandarin language skills and learning about Chinese culture in an informal and fun setting!

Debate & Public Speaking MAJOR commitment Ms Morgan & Mr Cawkell Monday 3:45-5:00pm Room 2028 Students who are interested in exploring the area of competitive debate and public speaking are welcome to join this group for the fall term. Differentiated experiences will be provided for novices and more experienced participants.

Chess Club Ms Clark & Andrew L. Monday @ lunch Room C4 (Annex) Chess is a two-player board game played on a chessboard, a square-checkered board with 64 squares arranged in an eight-by-eight grid. It is one of the world's most popular games, played by millions of people worldwide at home, in clubs, online, by correspondence, and in tournaments.

Spanish Club Ms Chee Tuesday @ lunch Room C5 (Annex) Spanish club is for Grade 11-12 students and is designed to provide academic support as well as an opportunity to explore and practice Spanish outside of the classroom. Model UN Libby Soper Tuesday @ 1:00pm Room C8 The Model UN is for students in Grades 10-12 and introduces students to the intricate world of international relations and diplomacy. Come learn more on how the UN system works and how resolutions are drafted and debated. An interest in world affairs is essential.

French Cine-Club Ms Soper Friday @ lunch Room C8 (Annex) Come at lunchtime on Fridays to room C8 and enjoy a screening of a French movie or episodes of a T.V. series. Food will be allowed in the class during the séance, but under certain conditions.

Service

Amnesty & jhr (Journalists for Human Rights) Chapter Mr Pulfer & Mr Wilson Tuesday @ 1.15pm Room 1002 Amnesty and jhr is a club for Upper School students who are committed to

promoting human rights and media rights around the world.

Art Room Open Art Studio Leaders (G7-9) Ms Hallam & Ms Wozny Monday - Thursday @ lunch Art Room Come by the art room one lunch hour per week to organise a small lesson for other students on a technique/art form, to help students find materials, and to facilitate clean up at the end of lunch. This is a Leadership opportunity that could be a super fun addition to your service portfolio. Speak to Ms. Wozny or Ms. Hallam for more information. ARTS Council Ms. Hallam Days: TBD (First Meeting Wed.Sept 26th - Lunchtime in Artroom) Room 2007 The ARTS Council is a Grade 7-12 student-led service leadership team that engages art and creativity throughout the school and in our community. A major focus of the team is supporting the FILM, DESIGN TECH, VISUAL ART, THEATRE and MUSIC departments of the school with their various endeavours throughout the year. Group meetings will be held throughout the year where opportunities to sign up for various artistic portfolios (ex. ZOOM film festival, Arts Week, major Performing Arts events (ie: school plays, Christmas show, Offering of the Arts, Design Tech fairs, Art Display, House Competitions, Junior School mentoring are some examples) will be introduced. Once you have signed up for a portfolio you will then meet with your teacher supervisor to determine the goals and needs of this project. If you want to have more of a voice in the arts events at Mulgrave, sign up to be a member of the Arts Council! Speak to Ms. Wozny or Ms. Hallam for more information.. Human Rights Club Mr Pulfer Monday @ 1:05 pm Room 1002 The Human Rights club is a club for Upper School students who are devoted to promoting human rights around the world. If you are passionate about the promotion of human rights around the world then please join our club and make a difference!

Global Week 2012 Organising Committee Mr Wilson, Mr Hardy & Mr Pulfer Wednesday @ lunch Room 1002 This Grade 10 & 11 team plans Global Week and the Grade 10 Cypress Student Summit (CSS) 2012 (scheduled for November 2012). This ‘world week’ highlights a global issue shaped by an MYP-style guiding question. The aim of the week is to develop understanding, empathy and engagement in global citizenship. This year our theme is ‘freedom’ and our guiding question is “How important is freedom?” Global Week and CSS are great leadership

and MYP/CAS eFolio activities. They provide unique student-driven educational opportunities to make a difference in your community while exploring world issues.

Sparks Club – Help a School in Afghanistan Ms Giesbrecht & Ms Turunen Tuesday 1:25-1:50pm Room 1012 This is an excellent opportunity to participate in international service and the time required is quite flexible so it can work well with other activities. Help to change the world one classroom at a time! In this club, we work together to support a school in Afghanistan. For the past 3 years this club has supported Sparks Academy and we are helping make a difference in the educational standards in Kabul as well as changing the lives of people in the community.

Random Acts of Cookies and Digital Good Mr Wilson & Ms McIntyre Wednesdays @ 1:15pm Room 2026 This is a Grade 7-9 social good, everyday kindness club, making the world a better place one good deed at a time. We create homemade treats and baked goods for others as a means of recognition, celebration and support for service and leadership in our community and beyond. The group also enjoys finding other opportunities to engage in actions for happiness, good deeds and “random acts of kindness”. We also explore online opportunities that make a difference in the world (“microvolunteerism”) and explore social media 4 social good.

Under the sea Ms Roy & Ms Bingham Thursday @ 1:30-2:00pm Room 2004 Under the Sea is an US club that focuses on awareness and action to protect marine life and ocean environments.

Music Tech Crew & Event Support Mr Rojas & Mr Hardy Ad Hoc special events AND music performances by the full or partial bands If you enjoy the challenge of setting up and arranging things this is a fun way to support the music programme. If would like to learn more about the various musical instruments and electronic devices used to amplify sounds then this activity would be ideal for you. Also, if you are not a musician, and you have friends who are this is great way to support their efforts. Sometimes, there are band trips that would then require your assistance, and you could travel with the musicians to their performance destinations. No previous experience is needed. Dates and times will be posted outside the music rooms.

Science Club Michael Moore Thursday @ 1:15pm Room 1012 Middle School students will have the opportunity to explore science activities beyond those covered in class. Each week there will be an opportunity to do ’hands-on’ science to test, explore or demonstrate an area of science. Senior School students are invited to help run the activities or to join a discussion forum keeping up-to-date with developments in science.

Animal Welfare Club Mr Wilson & Ms Collins Thursdays @ 1.15pm Room 2002 This service club for students in Grades 7-9 focuses on animal rights, support, adoption, advocacy and education locally and globally. The group is currently developing a plan to use recycling in the school to support local animal welfare projects. Please note that volunteering to walk dogs or visiting shelters are generally not viable options available through this club, due to shelter safety restrictions and time restrictions.

Me to We GEO Club Mr Wilson Tuesdays @ 1.15pm Room 1039 We live the change! This globalocal G7-12 service club supports Me to We and Free the Children projects as well as our Global Education and Outreach (GEO) Programmes, many of which are Me to We based. We go to We Day, support our international students on scholarship from Afghanistan and exchanges with Costa Rica, and support global awareness, empathy and action. This club is a good choice for students who have gone on GEO trips and are looking for ways to keep engaged in global issues.

Green Team Mr Pulfer & Mr Hardy Tuesday @ lunch Room 1002 The Green Team is an Upper School club devoted to making our school a ‘greener’, more sustainable place; we also focus on generating environmental awareness and action within our community and beyond on green issues such as climate change, pollution, energy consumption, resource depletion, farming and more.

G7-8 Middle School Service Action Council (MSAC) Mr Wilson & Ms Roy Thursday @ 1.15pm Room 1039 The Middle Service Action Council (M-SAC) is a Grade 7-9 student-led service leadership team that engages our “head, heart and hands” in making our world a better place. A major focus of the team is community engagement, humanitarian action, volunteerism, global citizenship, service learning and social good. SAC’s mission is to encourage active participation in service experiences, both locally and globally. SAC leaders are responsible for a mix of community portfolios within the context of Middle School life and in partnership with the Grade 10-12 Senior Service Action Council (SSAC), including Global Week, Spirit Week, Kids Help Phone Walk for Kids, a community project, the Grade 8-10 Dance and more. An application is required. Only 6 per G7-8 grade are usually selected to join the team of around 8 G9 leaders. The selection process is done by G9 MSAC executive.

Come and join the Pursuing Passions group where, under the direction of Jordan B. (G9), Devon Y. (G12) & Mr. Jones, you will be provided support and strategies to better manage your time, communicate with your teachers, and excel in your area of interest.

Mulgrave Design Club Mr Wilson, Ms Wozny & Debbie Pai Meeting time: TBD (First meet Tuesday September 18th ) Room 2008 The design club works with graphic arts design programmes and tools to create

posters, logos, and other customised designs for social good within the Mulgrave

community and beyond. Students are required to submit an art portfolio which

demonstrates interest and abilities relevant to the club.

Music & Performance: Theatre Tech Crew MAJOR commitment Mr Pope TBD Theatre Theatre Tech Crew focuses on preparing for school shows and, in particular, school assemblies. Most of the work involves training on stage lighting and sound. You learn how to set up light and sound equipment in the theatre and other areas (the gym, the field the foyer etc.). During assemblies and other events you will gain experience operating the lighting or sound or working back stage. Please contact Mr. Pope directly for an interview.

Vocal Jazz Ensemble Ms By Room 1103 Grade 9-12 (10-12 students by audition) Wednesday 3:45-5 The Jazz Ensemble will sing repertoire from many jazz related genres including Swing, Bebop, Latin, Blues and A cappella. This course is by invitation only, see Ms Alder for more information. If there is enough interest, a Middle School Jazz Choir will also run.

Athletic Clubs

Sunset Scrimmage Mr Leduc & Mr Mullen Wednesday 7:00-9:00pm Main Gym Sunset Scrimmage is open to male and female basketball players in Grades 10-12. Teams will be created and will play against one another in a 5-on-5 full court manner, after warming-up with a 20 minute shooting program. Participation is voluntary. Please see Mr. Leduc for more details. Table Tennis Dr Frewin TBD Table tennis, also known as ping-pong, is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight, hollow ball back and forth using table tennis rackets. The game takes place on a hard table divided by a net. Please see Dr Frewin for more details. Sunrise Basketball

Mr Leduc & Mr Mullen Monday & Friday (some Thursdays) 7:00-8:15am Main Gym Sunrise B-ball is a basketball club aimed at developing basketball fundamentals. Students will work on the areas of their game that are in need of development under the guidance of Coach Mullen and Coach Leduc. Sessions will be unstructured and self-directed. Participation is voluntary and open to male and female basketball players in Grades 7-12. Please contact Coach Leduc for more details.

Rock Climbing Club Rock Climbing at the Edge Climbing Centre Friday @ 2:30-4:00pm Ms McTavish The rock climbing club will be indoor climbing at the Edge Climbing Center. We hope to continue to develop skills that will give confidence, build strength and flexibility and teach students to work as a team. The Edge Climbing Center’s staff will instruct the students on all aspects of indoor climbing safety and will coach students on efficient movement skills and climbing techniques. Students do not need climbing experience to join the program and new members are always welcome! A letter and waiver will be sent home for those who join. There is a cost of $15 per session and a cheque made payable to Mulgrave School for the full fall term amount will be required.

Duke of Edinburgh This programme of distinction is offered to students in Grades 8-10 and requires four areas of participation: community service, expeditions and exploration, skills development, and physical fitness. Our goal at Mulgrave is to provide students with numerous opportunities to fulfil the requirements of their chosen level by using school based activities in the Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme. It is an exciting opportunity for students to combine their service hours, athletics and sense of adventure! Our experienced teachers offer the necessary guidance for any student wishing to enrol. Expeditions are organised at all three skill levels annually. Please contact Ms McTavish if, you are interested in participating in this club.
