History & MissionIsland Pacifi c Academy, founded in 2004 on the values of the power of human kindness and generosity of spirit, is an independent, non-profi t, college preparatory day school. Located on the west side of Oahu, Hawaii, the school’s purpose is to provide students with an academically challenging educational experience led by talented, caring instructors in a learning environment characterized by support and nurture of all students and commitment to graduate young citizens who will make positive contributions to their communities. Th e school has grown rapidly, opening in 2004 with 191 students in grades JK-7 and enrolling 680 students JK-12 in 2011-12. Th e Upper School opened in 2006 with grade nine and currently serves 210 students in grades 9-12. Th ere are now 83 alumni of the school attending colleges and universities across the country and around the world.
FacultyIn a short period of time Island Pacifi c Academy has assembled a talented and experienced Upper School faculty comprised of 29 instructors. A majority of our faculty hold advanced degrees and several hold multiple advanced degrees. A number of our teachers have received professional recognition or have served in national roles within their disciplines. Th e average class size is 18 with a student to faculty ratio of 10:1.

StudentsWest O'ahu, where Island Pacifi c Academy is located, is ethnically and economically diverse, and our student body refl ects this diversity. Admission to Island Pacifi c Academy is selective, consisting of an interview, standardized exams, a writing sample, a test of critical thinking ability, and teacher recommendations.
Student LifeTh e students at Island Pacifi c Academy participate in 22 team and individual sports, at all levels of competition, in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. Over 50% of our Upper School students participate in one or more sports. Several athletes have won state honors. Students are active in Student Government, publications and various clubs, national organizations and honor societies.

CurriculumTh e curriculum at Island Pacifi c Academy provides students with the academic preparation for success in college and beyond. IPA is in the candidacy stage for both the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (6-10) and the Diploma Programme (11-12) and will host the DP authorization visit in Fall 2011. Coursework emphasizes critical thinking and international mindedness and features Advanced Placement work in several fi elds. Strong traditional academic requirements, informed by current thinking regarding best practices, are balanced with a rich visual and performing arts program. Th e goal is to graduate thoughtful, informed citizens with the skills needed for productive lives in the 21st century.
Graduation Requirements Each full semester of instruction within a core subject area counts as one academic unit. Forty-two Upper School academic units are required for graduation. Students are required to take a minimum of fi ve academic courses each semester.
8 units of English literature and rhetoric (including Freshman • Composition and Sophomore Composition)
• 8 units of social science (including World History I, World History II, and American History)
• 8 units of mathematics (including Algebra II and Geometry)• 6 units of science (including 4 units of lab science)• 6 units of world language
4 units of Physical Education/Health (participation in varsity, • junior varsity or intermediate athletics may be substituted for up to 2 units of PE)
• 4 units of visual and performing arts• 100 hours of community service
Grading Scale & Class RankGPA is based on grades earned in grades 9-12. All courses for which the student receives an A – F grade are included in the GPA; Pass/Fail courses are graded P or F and are not included, but do count for graduation credit.
