Women empowered>> ATU hosts open day to draw attention to women’s rights and empower them
TANIA SANDBERG>>[email protected]
THE Amanzimtoti TraumaUnit (ATU) hosted an openday on Tuesday 5 August to
draw attention to women’s rightsand empower them this Women’sMonth.
“In our country, one in fourwomen are abused and domesticviolence is on the increase. Wewanted to inform women of theirrights and show themwhere to gofor support,” says ATU managerGail Schreiner.
“ATU’s main focus is to offer aplace of safety and trauma coun-selling to people who experienceabuse and tohelp families resolvetheir conflict,” Schreiner says.
“ATUwill assist with obtaininga protection order and take themto a place of safety.
“Whenitcomestodomesticvio-lence,thebiggestproblemismen,”says ATU board member andfounder Johnny van Rensburg. “Ifmen stopped finding excuses fortheirbehaviouranddidwhat is re-quired of them, the problem willresolve itself. According to Bible
scripture, men were called to bethe ‘priest, protector and king’ oftheir families. They should beleading from the front, not bepeople who abuse women andchildren.
“Men don’t understand abuse, because they are the ones dishingit out. Seeingwomenand children
with broken bones is the reality ofit all,” Van Rensburg says.
He said years ago, if you got aspeeding fine, thecourtspunishedspeedsters with community serv-ice in a hospital, taking care of,among others, victims of acci-dents.
Abusers should be called to do
community service at organisa-tions like ATU.
“Indeed, men are the problem, but they are also the solution.Menneed to set the example for theirfamilies. Even if you come from afamily where you were subjectedtoabuse, youneed to standupandsay ‘the buck stops with me’.”

Pennington Beachmeets Blue-Flag status>> Beach already has pilot Blue-Flag statusSETON THOMPSON>>[email protected]
SCOTTBURGHmain beach is themostpopularofUmdoni’s bath-ing beaches, but Pennington
Beach isway ahead in terms of quali-fying for Blue-Flag status. The beachalready has pilot Blue-Flag statusand, in the words of beach managerMelvyn Pachai to the communityservices committee on Tuesday 5August, only the upgrading of life-guards and security to a daily pres-ence is needed to qualify it for “100%rating”.
Some Penningtonians, includingthe ratepayers’ association are notthat confident, pointing out that theapplying authority would have tobudget foressential improvements towaterquality, beachaccess, toiletand
parking facilities, littering and roam-ing dogs, among others.
“However, the benefits of achiev-ing Blue-Flag status would outweighany possible disadvantages andwouldimproveaspectsofPenningtonthat are in need of an upgrade.
“Such an application would bewelcomed and has the support of thePRRA committee with the provisothatwearekept informedof intendeddevelopments,” said Pachai.
The Blue-Flag organisation evenofferstoabsorbthefirstyear’sfee, butthe challenge is that Umdoni has nobudget to meet the estimatedR250 000 for lifeguards, securityandother costs. Councillors heard howScottburgh beach’s status continuesto be plagued by high E-coli counts. The meeting was told that theproblems are not in the beach area,
but up the Mpambanyoni River to-wards Umzinto.
The Ugu-controlled sewagesystems in that area are suspect asare some of the settlements in andnear the town. A suggestion at themeeting thatUmdoni confrontUguatmunicipalmanager level demandinga clean up of their systems was metwiththeassurancethatUguknowsallabout it, but does nothing.
“The previous Umdoni municipalmanager, DD Naidoo, holding thesame job at Ugu, knows all about itfrom when he was here,” alleged anofficial.
Committee chairman EdwinBaptiesuggestedthattheissuesbere-ported to environmental affairs andthat in the meantime, Umdoni go forfull Blue-Flag status at PenningtonBeach.

Joint service in expensive muddle
SETON THOMPSON>>[email protected]
MOSTUmdoni ratepayersmay not know it butthey are the “fall guys” for a gyrating muddlethat council and officials appear unable to re-solve. The matter was up for discussion yetagainatthecouncil’smeetingonWednesday30July and exactly what resolution was taken isa matter for debate.
Ugu and its satellite municipalities ofUmdoni, Umzumbe and Vulamehlo have ashared disaster facility arrangement whichUmdoni has the honour of providing. The keyelement is the fire service, the most critical, most expensive and most under-resourced ofthe disaster services.
The problem is that the terms of referencehave consistently been left incomplete andsecondly, that Ugu in particular, ran out ofmoney. In thewords of Umdoni Speaker SykesNaidoo: “The other three are all paying lessthan they committed to.”
This means that Umdoni is picking up thebill which is far more than it committed to.
In the words of chief financial officer AdilNunkumar: “Ugu still owes a significantamount of its debt.”
In 2013/2014, it is said to owe R1,3 millionand is offering to pay R635 000.
Currently, Ugu is indebted to the tune ofaboutR2,5 million toUmdoni. For2014/2015,the “partners” are designated to pay a furtherR2,5 million and nobody is confident that theywill. That has led to council suggesting that theagreementbeterminated, whichcouldresult inUgu defaulting on the existing R2,5 milliondebt.
MunicipalmanagerXolani Luthuli revealedthat the service level agreement presented byUmdoni was only signed by Umdoni and istherefore not binding on the others.
This could see it R2,5 million down thetubes. Cllr Edwin Baptie has suggested thatprovincebailsoutUguwhichpays itsdebtsandthe agreement then be terminated.

Welfare hosts Women’s Day celebration>> ‘This project aids us in supplementing our food budget’TANIA SANDBERG>>[email protected]
IN acknowledgement of Women’s Month,Kingsburgh Child and Family Welfarerecognised women in the community who
regularly support its thrift shop, treating themto cake and tea at the Kingsburgh offices onTuesday 5 August.
“The women are a vital link in supporting
our organisation. They purchase items fromour shop as part of an income-generatingproject. The items are inexpensive, whichmeanstheycanresell themtosupplementtheirincome. This project aids us in supplementingour food budget for the families we support,”says Sandra Govender, senior social workerfor the organisation.
She says one might consider the incomegenerated only a drop in the ocean, but everydropmakesadifference.Shecalledonthecom-munity to donate household goods, clothing ornon-perishable items for the shop.

Beachfront, hanging in the balanceSETON THOMPSON>>[email protected]
AT 5.30pm on Wednesday 13 August, thepeople of Scottburgh and its surrounds willcongregateat theUmdoniMunicipalHall tode-bate the latest in a series of proposals andprojects for their beachfront.
Over the years there is a range of attitudeson this issue and councillors, who will have todecide, canonlyhope fordivine intervention inperformingtheirmandateofrepresentingpub-lic opinion.
The project up for discussion is the result ofconsideration between the Royal HaskoningDHV Consultancy and Umdoni municipalofficials.
Thisshouldnotbeinterpretedasthemunic-ipality in cohesion.
At a planning, development and infrastruc-turemeetingoverthepastweek,SpeakerSykes
Naidoo termed it “a fancyproposal—too fancyfor us andmore suitable for Disneyland or LasVegas”, and his views were shared by col-leagues.
Environmentalists Adrienne Edgson andCarolynSchwegmanhavehadalookatthepro-posalandEdgsonhasadvisedshebelieves that“the project team has come up with a reason-able development concept”.
Community stalwart and publicist WilliamPienaar believes “it is going to take a strongforce to change the ideas they have of incorpo-rating thecampingsitewithapublicwalkway”but questions the merits of this.
As featured elsewhere in this week’s Fever, there are those in council who appear to havegiven up on rectifying the E-coli count at thebeachwhichnullifiesBlue-Flagstatusandsug-gest focusing on Pennington.
Pitted against this is a strong componentthat eschews large-scale development and
pointsout thatScott-burgh’s future restson providing a natu-ral environmentcompared with theconcrete jungles atMargate, Winkel-spruit and Aman-zimtoti.
“Authoritiesmust enforce thenecessary stand-ards of health andhygiene to giveScottburgh Blue-Flag status— that isthe target, notconcrete and glass”,one councillor toldthe Fever.

‘Blue-light report, elaborate publicity stunt’A RECENT newspaper report, quot-ing the ANC that its KwaZulu-Natalstructure will not tolerate the abuseof blue lights by its members ingovernment is little more than anelaborate publicity stunt.
To add insult to injury the partygoes on to state that the abuse ofblue lights “smacks of arrogance”. If
the ANC truly believes this and if itwants to be taken seriously thenwhy is there no legislated officialpolicy in KZN which bans bluelights?
The DA has already done so inthe Western Cape and the questionmust be asked — what is KZN’sleadership waiting for?
Talk is cheap.Unless the ANC is prepared to put
its money where its mouth is, thenblue-light brigades will continue tothreaten the safety and security of allroad users.

Who has thewhistle?LISTENING to the game on TV, thereseems to be pleasant surprise that somany rugby finals and other keygamesarerefereedbySouthAfricanssuch as Jonathan Kaplan and CraigJoubert and that endorses how goodtheyareandisgoodforourrugbyandthey probably are because they getplenty of practise.
What the fundis don’t emphasiseisthatitalsoisanendorsementofhowpoorourrugby is.Thetrendis tohaveneutral referees, especially at finalsand other key games, so if there is aSouth African referee it’s becausethere is no SouthAfrican teamon thefield.
The only time most South Africanteams play their hearts out is at localderbysandtheygenerallyhaveSouthAfrican referees for cost and conven-ience reasons.
So if winning the cup is the objec-tive,weshouldbehappierwhenthereis not a South African refereeing it. Itappears that the Aussies and Kiwisunderstand that rule of thumb.

Who’s to blame for muthi killings?WATCHING a recent TV programme on theissueofmuthikillings, Iwasshockedtohearthe claim that it is sangomas who are large-ly to blame for such atrocities, a claim Iknow to be untrue.
I had a lot of experience dealing with“real” sangomas (not hoaxes) in my earlierdays. There are three categories of medi-cine purveyors — sangomas, nyangas andmthakathis — and it is the latter — theabathakathi — who account for the rituals,a practise that is not acceptable tosangomas and nyangas.
These two categories play importantroles in African medicine, the nyangas be-ing doctors, chemists and herbalists, main-
ly use tree bark, roots and other vegetablesources for medicine to cure and healpeople.
Sangomas are highly respectable andrespectful spiritual people who hlola orseek out events that have happened ormight happen, indicating a solution.
Shaka Zulu was spiritual and dislikedthe abthakathi, seeing them as dangerousand undermining his authority as king andpunished them severely. It is important inthese modern times that such issues areknown and that blame lies where it shouldlie.

Achieving the achievableTHEY may technically worshipdifferent gods, but therearemanywho believe our coastline repre-sents one of God’s greatest giftsand that there is little or nothingthat politicians and business peo-pleinparticular,candotoimproveit — only the opposite.
On the other hand, there aremany who acknowledge that thetourismthatgoeswiththebeachesis our best hope for a better eco-nomic life.
These beliefs are not mutually
exclusive, but thedevil is in thede-tail. From a tourism point of view,Blue Flag is an internationallyrecognised assurance of certainstandards.
From the point of view ofdevelopment, there is not muchthat can practically be done toPennington Beach to make it abetter bathing beach.
To clean up the E-coli and getBlue-Flag status for Scottburghand for Pennington would be agood compromise.

autofeverBumper July forGMSA brands>> Month saw previous sales records surpassed
CHEVROLET, Isuzu and Opel contin-ued the trend of strong sales in July, giving General Motors South Africa
(GMSA) a 10.1% share of the market forthe month. Total South African new pas-senger vehicle sales in July stood at57 670, and 5 821 of these were from theGMSA stable.
This allowed the company to riseabove the trend, despite the South Afri-can motor industry declining by 4.7% fortheperiodfromJanuarytoJuly, comparedto the same period last year. July also had23 selling days, which had a positive im-pact on the overall market.
“July saw Chevrolet models, including
the Spark, Cruze and Captiva, surpass allprevious sales records achieved in 2014.The final numbers were 1 020 for theSpark, 199 for the Captiva and 356 for theCruze,” said Brian Olson, GMSA vice-presi-dent of vehicle sales, service and market-ing.
“The sixth generation Isuzu KB is en-joying the brand’s highest share of theone-tonsegmentinfiveyearsas1 379Isu-zu KB pickups were sold in July,” said Ol-son.
“In addition, the Opel Corsa, Astra, and Meriva each recorded their best retailperformances for this year. Opel volumeshave now increased by by 54% so far thisyear, when compared to January to July2013. This illustrates that South Africansare echoing the sentiments of Europeanbuyers, who are loving the Opel brand andcausing it to enjoy a resurgence in themarket.” — Supplied.

Third generation Kia isbold and back
THE third generation Kia Sorento will beunveiled in Korea next month, featuringbold, swept-back exterior styling, a premi-um interior look and luxury features.
The new model sports a lower roofline, higher beltline, a more muscular stanceand deeply sculpted body surfaces. To-gether with a larger, more upright “tiger-nose” grille, these design changes haveraised the the bar on sophistication andstyle.
The cabin will also create a new stand-ard of luxury in its segment, thanks to amodern, wrap-around dashboard, highquality soft-touch materials and a range ofadvanced on-board technologies.
Interior styling was led by the brand’sdesign team in Frankfurt, Germany, which
cited the finest modern Swiss watches asa key influence during the design phase. The smoothly contoured cabin featuressoft-touch materials, leather and stitch-ing, as well as Kia’s latest human-machineinterface.
A large infotainment screen dominatesthe centre of the dashboard, which em-ploys long, flowing shapes to envelope thedriver and front passenger and emphasisethe width and space of the large cabin.
The new Kia Sorento will be showcasedin Korea in late August, and is due to makeits European premiere on Thursday 2 Octo-ber at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. It is ex-pected to arrive in South African show-rooms in the first quarter of 2015.

Lower the revson road rageSIMPLE tips can prevent a minor trafficevent from escalating into road rage.
This is according to the Automobile As-sociation, which urges drivers not to over-react to inconsiderate action of road-users.
Common triggers of road rage are whenpeople don’t wait their turn at stop streets, cut other motorists off or tailgate them.
“What is the maximum loss of time
caused by someone not waiting their turnat a stop street? It is rarely more than five, maybe 10 seconds,” an AA representativepointed out.
“Reports of road-rage incidents seemto show that people spend more time ar-guing over the initial error than they wouldhave lost by simply taking it in their stride.”
The AA reminds the public that driversoccasionally make mistakes, and advisedthatwhenthishappens, oneshoulddefusethe situation by apologising to the partiesconcerned.
“When we drive, we should take our cue
from normal behaviour outside of the vehi-cle,” the organisation advised. “Societyrunssmoothlywhenweareabletotolerateminorfailingspolitely.Wecanmakedrivingsafer for everyone by carrying this atti-tude.” — Supplied.
Road rage indicates that peoplespend more time arguing thanFsimply taking an incident in theirstride.

The bike tends to roll easily over the thingsthat you don’t see and reactions are quicker.Thegroupdidagood20-oddkilometresbeforeheading back to the car park due to mostpeople’s lights batteries running out. Thankyou to Bruce Koll for organising that fun ride.
Saturday morning saw a large group wait-ingatthegrasspatchreadytodoalongtrainingride. The group headed off into the hills andended up splitting in twowith one group doingan easier loop around uMnini on the tar roadbefore heading off home and the other attack-ing the lovely steep dirt roads up to the radartower and navigating a bit of unridden trackdown the side of a hill to rejoin the sand roadback to uMnini Dam.
Both groups ended up with more than a
65km ride under their belt. The C group was also out and about doing
a 20km-plus route around the Illovo farm. Wewill be adding a bit more onto this ride in thenext week or so.
