Many experts believe there are too many people in the world. Unless there are big

changes in the way people think about the number of children they should have, the world’s

population will double in 25 years. There will be more than 20 cities with populations greater

than 20 million. Now there is only one.

Some people point to countries such as Australia and say, “There is plenty of room

there.” Although most of Australia is unpopulated, and much of it is hardly populated, there

are reasons for this. Firstly, much of the land is desert and waterless, and secondly, even

the land that is not desert is not suitable for anything, not even growing grass. Another

major problem we have to face as the world’s population grows is shortage of energy. We are

using up coal and oil and when they have been used up, we have to find something to make up

for them. It is true that we can make electricity from the heat of the sun and from moving

water but we don’t yet have the technology to do this! Perhaps, the biggest problem we may

have when the world’s population doubles will be pollution. The air we breathe is already

badly polluted.

4- Read and answer: (5 Marks)

Man is sociable by nature. He can’t live in isolation from others. He has to be co-

operative and considerate. He must sacrifice for the welfare of others. As he can’t

live apart from others, human beings live in societies. Each is a member of the society

and each does a certain work for the good of all. The members of a society can’t do

without work, each individual is naturally fitted for a certain activity, and the success

and the progress of the society depend upon its members’ performances of their

tasks.

A doctor’s work is very successful and important, and I think that no society can

do without it. Just imagine the numerous patients he cures, But for him, they would

die. Also think of the sufferings he relieves, the groan he puts an end to and the good

health he restores to the weak. To render these valuable services, he sometimes has

to sacrifice his rest, pleasures and perhaps his safety.

The farmer’s work, though different from the doctor’s is not less important. It

is the farmer that supplies us with the food necessary for our existence. Except for

him, we should be starved to death, and as we all know, the pain of hunger is as acute

as that of illness. Also the farmer’s work is not less difficult than the doctor’s. To get

a rich harvest, he toils all the year, plowing, digging, sowing, planting, irrigating,

fertilizing, reaping and harvesting. Whether it is calm or stormy, clear or cloudy, he

has to go out to his fields so that we shall have foodstuffs to sustain us. From this, we

can see that both the doctor and the farmer are the main pillars in the social

structure.
