“Uptown, Downtown” is about a 16 year-old girl named Abigail from a farm in North Carolina coming to New York City and stays in a nice hotel in Times Square. There is a man Abigail’s age working there. He thinks Abigail is beautiful. Unfortunately, there is a rich, spoiled man, also Abigail’s age who is after Abigail too. He is staying at the same hotel. BEFORE THE SHOW
Super: There is a shot of a North Carolina farm,
and a shot of Times Square side-by-side, printed
on a curtain.
NARRATOR
Welcome to {Name of theatre}. Please take this
time to turn off all personal electronic
devices. If you are caught with a with any cell
phones, PDA’s laptop’s or camera’s, you will be
prosecuted.
SUPER: Cell phone ringing.
NARRATOR
I’m gonna get you! (Mumbles) Enjoy our
performance of Uptown, Downtown.
ACT 1
SCENE 1: Guess What, Abigail!
SUPER: The curtain’s rise and Abigail’s mom
walks in with Abigail.
MOM
We haven’t taken you on a vacation this year.
ABIGAIL
So?
MOM
Your father and I want to take you to New York.
ABIGAIL
N N N N New York?
MOM
Yes, New York. Ahh, so much to discover. I can’t
wait to see Times Square. I heard there is big
screen’s put on buildings there.
ABIGAIL
Me too. When are we going?
MOM
The next school break.
ABIGAIL
That’s tomorrow!
MOM
Yes, now it is 7:30, and we all have to wake up
early to get on the plane. Good Night.
ABIGAIL
Stop treating me like a 5 year old!
SUPER: Abigail’s dad walks in.
DAD
Just go to bed!
ABIGAIL
Ok, Mrs. Pushy. (Mumbling)Seriously.
SUPER: The lights dim, then brighten. A plane
fly’s across the sky. The lights dim again, and
then brighten. Abigail and her parents walk out
of a plane as transition music plays.
SCENE 2: New York = WOW!
ABIGAIL
No one said that JFK Airport is so big! Whoa,
what’s that?
DAD
It’s called an INFORMATION DESK!
ABIGAIL
(Speaks in a weak, high pitched voice.) Oh.
MOM
Let’s catch a subway.
DAD
OK.
ABIGAIL
What’s a subway?
DAD
An underground train.
ABIGAIL
COOL!
MOM
There is a subway. Let’s catch it!
SUPER: Abigail and her parents run into the
subway. The lights dim. They brighten back up.
Abigail and her parents walk up stairs from
underground as transition music plays. They are
in Times Square.
SCENE 3: Times Square
ABIGAIL
WHOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
MOM
You’ll get used to it. Oh! There’s the hotel!
Scene 4: Wobbly Lobby
SUPER: Abigail and her parents walk to the
door to the hotel. They open the door and the
lights dim. The lights brighten back up. They are
in the hotel lobby, but their spotlights are off,
and Thomas and James’ spotlights are on.
Thomas and James are sitting in armchairs in
front of a coffee table.
JAMES
So I was on my private jet, which just passed
over Brazil, and I was planning to go to
Australia, but then, I slapped the pilot, and
I’m like “Turn around, were going to Rio!”
THOMAS
(LAUGHS)
SUPER: Thomas slap’s his left leg. Thomas and
James’ spotlights turn off, Abigail and her
parents’ spot lights turn on.
MOM
Yes, room 679.
BECK
Here’s your key caaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrd.
Luke hands the key card to Abigail.
BECK
How old are you?
ABIGAIL
Sixteen, why?
BECK
Your cute, do you want to meet me at the
Europa Café on Carnegie Hill? They have great
pancakes.
ABIGAIL
Oh! I love pancakes!
SUPER: Abigail turns around to her parents.
ABIGAIL
Mom, can I meet Luke at the Europa Café on
Carnegie Hill?
PLEASE!
MOM AND DAD
[Indecent Talking]
DAD
Sure, as long as...
MOM
... you take the subway alone.
DAD
And don’t talk to strangers, this city is filled
with them.
MOM
And we will go to the spa.
ABIGAIL
I will go for breakfast tomorrow.
MOM
OK
SUPER: Abigail turns back around to Beck.
BECK
Can you come?
ABIGAIL
Yeah, meet me on Subway B.
BECK
OK
ABIGAIL
So, see you tomorrow!
SCENE 5: Subway Station 1
SUPER: The lights turn dim, then turn back on
again. Abigail and Beck are walking downstairs
as transition music plays.
[Indecent Talking]
ABIGAIL
There’s the subway. Lets catch it!
BECK
Let’s go!
SUPER: Abigail and Beck run into the subway.
The backdrop rises. Abigail and Beck hold on
to the handles.
Scene 7: Subway 1
[Indecent Talking]
ABIGAIL
I feel like I am in a can of sardines!
BECK
Welcome to New York, A.K.A. “Crowded Land”!
ABIGAIL
I know!
BECK
Here’s our stop- lets get out of this can of
sardines!
SUPER: The lights turn dim, then turn back on
again. Abigail and Beck are walking upstairs in
front of the Europa Café. They open the door,
and the backdrop rises as transition music
plays.
SCENE 8: Café Crazy
ABIGAIL
1 table for 2, please.
BECK
[Laughs] I think your getting the New York way.
EMMA
Right this way.
BECK AND ABIGAIL
OK, then.
EMMA
[Chuckles] So adorable.
SUPER: Abigail and Beck sit down. They read the
menu. A waitress comes.
WAITRESS (KATIE)
Hello, I am Katie and I will be your waitress,
can I offer you any drinks?
ABIGAIL
Orange juice, please and thank you.
BECK
Same
KATIE
[Chuckling] And are you ready to order?
BECK
Yes, I will have a mocha waffle with whipped
cream, and you, Abigail?
ABIGAIL
I will have a crepe with powdered sugar and
chocolate sauce.
SUPER: Abigail widens her eyes.
ABIGAIL
Wow, I never knew that New York is so,
everything. Where do people live? Do they live
in a giant can of sardines?
SUPER: Katie comes back with a tray.
KATIE
Would you stop it with the sardines!?
BECK
She’s from North Carolina, chill.
KATIE
Oh, sorry.
SUPER: Katie walk’s away.
BECK
Wow. No, people in New York do not live in can’s
of sardines.
KATIE
[Screams across the stage.] What did I say?
BECK
[Scream’s across the stage.] SORRY!
ABIGAIL
[Chuckles] New York is everything.
BECK
So, back to what we were...
SUPER: Katie walks in with a tray.
KATIE
Your orders ready!
ABIGAIL AND BECK
[Mumbles] Thank you!
BECK
Finally, people in the city live in apartment
buildings.
ABIGAIL
What?
BECK
A building that holds hundreds of families.
ABIGAIL
O.M.G.
BECK
You will get used to it. Oh, this waffle is so
good!
ABIGAIL
How do they make these pancakes?
BECK
Fancy professional things!
ABIGAIL
Whoa!
SUPER: Abigail almost trips over her shoelace.
The lights dim, then brighten. Abigail and Beck
are finished with their breakfast.
ABIGAIL
Well, that was nice. But already, it’s noon!
BECK
Want to ride the sardine machine back to the
hotel?
KATIE
(Screams across the stage.) What did I say?
ABIGAIL
Lets go, before Ms. I Don’t Have A Sense Of
Humor starts taking karate classes.
BECK
Good point.
SUPER: The lights turn dim, then turn back on
again. Abigail and Beck are walking downstairs
as transition music plays.
SCENE 9: Subway Station 2
[Indecent Talking]
ABIGAIL
Subway B! Get on it!
BECK
[Mumbling] The young female has learned the ways
of the New Yorker.
SUPER: Abigail and Beck run into the subway.
The backdrop rises. Abigail and Beck hold on
to the handles.
SCENE 9: Subway 2
ABIGAIL
Well, this is a canned city.
BECK
[Laugh’s]
SUPER: The lights turn dim, then turn back on
again. Abigail and Beck are walking upstairs into
Times Square.
BECK
Well, I got to get back to the hotel! See you
later!
